Hilton Head Island is like a second home to us. We've spent our family vacations there for more than 27 years, with many of those times during the week of Thanksgiving. On this particular occasion, we had gone out to eat for lunch on Thanksgiving Day. Our so daughters in law and friends gathered around a large table with us as we enjoyed plates heaped high with turkey, cranberry sauce and all the trimmings.
In the midst of all the conversations and laughter, I noticed an old couple seated several tables away from us. They were adorable. I mentioned them to my family, and we talked about how cute they were. But what bothered me was that they were alone.
They finished their meal long before we did, and as they got up to leave the restaurant, they unexpectedly stopped at our table. “Excuse me for disturbing you,” she said. “But my husband and I were sitting over there watching you while eating, and we were admiring your beautiful family,” I told her we'd been watching them as well, talking about how cute they were together. I said, “Would you like to sit down and join us while we are having our meal?” We pulled some chairs up to the table, and they told us that they had lived on the island for many years and that their son was too far away to come back for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. We enjoyed their company so much that we stood outside talking for a while after lunch.
After we said goodbye to them that evening, I said, “You're welcome to join us for meals whenever we're here and especially on Thanksgiving.” And they did. We had many wonderful meals together through the years, and until his health declined too much to eat with us, they were never by themselves again on Thanksgiving.

The International Painting Contest on Google's homepage in 2015 may look pretty strange, but it spotlightings a very serious issue: clean water, which is unusual for an 11 year old from Long Island.
Audrey Zhang, a fifth grader from Levittown, N.Y, is the winner of this year's Doodle 4 Google contest, rising to the top of some 100, 000 entries on the theme of “draw one thing to make the world a better place.”
Her piece, titled “Back to Mother Nature,” describes a detailed water cleaning machine. Zhang worked with a team of artists at Google to animate (使……生动)her drawing.
“To make the world a better place, I came up with a transformative water purifier, a machine used to remove dirty or harmful substances,” Google quoted Zhang as saying. “It takes in dirty and polluted water from rivers, lakes and even oceans, then massively transforms the water into clean, safe and pure water. When humans and animals drink this water, they will live a healthier life.”
She created a whole world around the device—one populated by humans, a whale in a top hat and dragons.
Zhang's piece is “so vivid and so rich and so full and so complete,” Google Doodle team leader Ryan Germick told the Washington Post. “Every leaf seemed to have life in it.”
Along with having her artwork featured on Google's homepage, Zhang wins a $30,000 college scholarship. In addition, her school will receive a $50,000 Google for Education technology grant, and the company is donating $20,000 in her name to a charity devoted to bringing clean water to schools in Bangladesh.
On Sunday, the night before her work was revealed on net, Zhang told Newsday she was excited by the big win, but said she wouldn't be awake when her art first went online at midnight.
“I have school tomorrow, so I can't stay up late,” she told the paper.

Lucky bamboo is just a type of water lily (睡莲) from Africa and is said to bring good luck and good fortune to people of any space where it is grown. Here are a few tips on how to grow it in water.
Look for a plant with bright green leaves. If the leaves or stems (茎) are yellow or brown, this means that the plant is unhealthy.
Put the lucky bamboo in a tall glass vase. A clear container is great if you just want to grow the plant with some decorative stones. Choose the right spot. Lucky bamboo does best in bright, filtered (过滤的) sunlight. Direct sunlight will damage the leaves. And as for temperature, this plant prefers an air temperature between 65? and 90?.
Change the water every week. And as for what water to use, this plant is very sensitive to chemicals—only use tap water if it's been sitting out for 24 hours (so the chemicals can get off). The best water for your plant is fresh spring water, rainwater, or filtered water. Fertilizer is necessary. Of course, use liquid fertilizer in the water.
Prevent tip burn by using filtered or bottled water. Tip burn is when the leaves start to become dry and dead. This often happens when there are chemicals in the water. Setting your tap water out may not be enough—you may need to switch to bottled water to get your plant to look healthy.
Trim (修剪) the plant because it will become top heavy over time. Don't cut off the main stem—just the branches. Attention to the leaves. If they're dry and dying, that's a water problem. If they're yellowing, that's too much sunlight or too much fertilizer. If they're brown, spray the plant with water.
OK, take such valuable tips, and you will become an expert on growing lucky bamboo.

Doctors have a new weapon in the battle against obesity (过度肥胖)—a talking plate that tells people not to eat too quickly. The Mandometer monitors the amount of food leaving the plate, and tells users, “Please eat more slowly.”
The £1,500 Swedish device is to be used in a National Health Service plan to help hundreds of obese families lose weight. It comes in two parts—a scale placed under the plate and a small computer screen showing a graphic (图表) of the food gradually disappearing as the user eats. A red line on the screen shows the user's eating speed, while a blue line shows a healthy rate. If the user eats too fast, the red line angles away from the blue one, warning him or her to ease off. If the lines deviate (偏离) too much, the computer voice comes on, and the screen flashes the message “Are you feeling full yet?” to remind users to think about whether they have had enough.
Britain has an increasingly serious obesity problem, with one in four adults and one in seven children classed as obese. After a recent trial using the device, experts believe teaching obese people to eat more slowly will help them know when they are full. Around 600 families with at least one obese parent and child (aged five or older) were targeted in the project by Bristol University, along with GPs and nurses.
Professor Julian Hamilton Shield, who is leading the plan, says obese children and adolescents using the Mandometer ate from 12 to 15 percent less per meal at the end of the 12 month trial. Six months after they stopped using the device they still ate less, and continued to lose weight. “It will be a powerful tool to help families retrain their eating habits,” he says.
32.What does the red line on the screen show
A.A healthy rate of eating. B.Too much food is left.
C.The user's eating speed. D.The user is full.
33.What can we infer from the text
A.The device can help obese people form good eating habits.
B.Every family will have such a device soon.
C.This device is the best way to lose weight.
D.People will no longer worry about obesity.
34.The underlined phrase “ease off” is closest in meaning to .
A.to become less tense B.to eat more slowly
C.to remove gently and slowly D.to stop
35.Which of the following is TRUE, according to the text
A.25% of children are obese in Britain.
B.One in seven adults is obese in Britain.
C.Children using the Mandometer ate less after the trial.
D.Six months after the trial, obese people are still eating a lot.

(2016·河南省八校联考)Teenagers are especially likely to suffer loneliness. Here are some suggestions for speeding a recovery from loneliness.
Reach out to others, but start small. A smile and a friendly greeting for the student behind you in line at the cafeteria won't make you best friends. 36 It also can make it easier to interact (一起活动) the next time.
Find a safe place to make connections. If going to the school dance makes you feel like you just don't belong, try joining a special interest group. Maybe it's the drama club or the marching band. 37
Find other ways of making connections. Lonely people hunger for acceptance and friendship. Sometimes feeling accepted and liked comes more easily when you do something for others. 38 Teach a child in reading. Take notes for a disabled classmate. You might be surprised at the connections you make after reaching out in these ways.
39 Loneliness is an absence of quality friendships, not of a particular quantity of friends. That's why it's important to know how to select a friend. The best friendships are those based on similar values and attitudes.
You get what you expect, so expect the best. If you expect others to be friendly, you will behave in similar ways.
40 It goes away as teens learn how to find their way through their social world and connect with others.
A.But it will make you both feel pretty good.
B.So consider becoming a volunteer.
C.Some teens aren't so adaptable, however.
D.Encourage people to be friendlier to you.
E.Choose the right people.
F.For most young people, loneliness is only temporary.
G.Look for a group that allows you to ease in gradually.

Text 10
Do you know when and where ice cream began It's an international favorite with a long and interesting history. The earliest ices were eaten in China many years ago. The people would put orange juice on ice. Later this idea traveled to Italy. Nero, the emperor of Rome between 37 and 68 AD liked to eat ice as a special treat between violin lessons. He ordered runners to run to the mountains, get snow and quickly ran back to the palace. The snow was mixed with fruit juices and nuts. Around 1660, coffee shops serving ice cream were very popular in Paris. Italians owned most of the coffee shops. A man from Sicily, named Francesco, opened the first successful one. Before ice cream was sold in stores, it was made and frozen at home. It took a lot of work to make the cream, eggs, fruit, ice and salt and then to freeze it. Nancy Johnson, an American woman who was good at machines invented the hand turned ice cream freezer in 1846. Five years later, Jacob Flusell opened the first ice cream business in Maryland, US. His business quickly spread to other states. Today, in the US, ice cream is not only a nice food, but a way of life.

第二节 书面表达(满分25分)
范文
Dear Tom,
I'm glad that you are going to visit Beijing for two days. As the capital city of China, Beijing lies in the north of China (North China/northern China),covering a land of 16,000 square kilometers with a population of 1.3 million. As an international city, it is blessed with the most world cultural heritage (heritage sites) on the earth.
As for your 2 day schedule, my suggestions are as follows. On the first day, you may pay a visit to the Great Wall, where you can take some photos as well as buy some souvenirs. On the second day, you could stand on the Tiananmen Gate tower to overlook the Forbidden City. After that, you could look around the Palace Museum, so as to immerse yourself in the charm of traditional Chinese culture. What do think of this plan
Welcome to Beijing! I hope you'll fall in love with it when arriving here. Looking forward to seeing you soon.
Best wishes,
Li Hua
