Wang Lin is going to invite some American friends to a dinner party, but she is not clear about American customs. She wrote to her friend, Mary, for advice. Here is Mary’s letter.
Dear Wang,
I learned that you would give a dinner party next month with some American friends. That would be interesting. I think you can cook something that would let you spend time with your guests. If a guest offers(提供) to help you in the kitchen, accept it. It often makes people feel more comfortable when they can help. I know making dumplings is a tradition in your country, and everyone can help. Why not try it
Before serving dinner, offer your guests drinks while your guests make small talks in the living room. Make sure you have soft drinks for people who don’t drink wine.
At the dinner table, let your guests serve themselves. Offer them a second serving after they finish, but don’t ask more than once or twice because most guests will take more themselves if they want it.
The most important rule of all is to be natural. Treat your guests as you want them to treat you when you’re in their home. Don’t try too hard to be polite.
Well, I hope it will be a great party! If you need any help, please let me know.
Yours,
Mary

You see, in Arabic countries you mustn’t eat with your left hand. This is considered to be very impolite. So, what should you do if you visit a foreign country Well, you needn’t worry. “Oh, that’s terrible!” my sister Angel whispered (小声说) to me. “Do you see that lady over there She is talking with her mouth full.”
I glanced (瞥一眼) to my right. A woman was eating with some friends. She was in the middle of a talk. Her mouth was open wide while she laughed and chatted.
“You’re right. That’s terrible,” I whispered back.
Just then, our server came to the table to take our order. We each told him what we wanted from the menu.
While we were waiting for our food, our mom began a talk about manners.
“Kids,” she began, “I see you noticed that lady speaking with her mouth full, Did you like what you saw ” “No!” we answered.
“What is the right way to eat ”
“We should keep our mouth closed,” I said. “Can you think of any other ways to behave while at a restaurant ” My sister and I thought for a moment. Then Age l spoke up, “I guess we could keep our voices down, so we don’t interrupt others.” “That’s a good one,” Mom said. “Anything else ” “We can be sure to say kind things to the server, like ‘please’ and ‘thank you’,” I added. “Yes,” Angel continued. “And we can keep a napkin on our lap, and not reach across the table for food, and wipe our mouths with our napkins, and…”
Mom laughed and said, “It’s important that in public places, we realize that we are sharing space. Others come to a restaurant to enjoy good food and have a good time with other people. They can’t do that as well if someone is too loud or has terrible eating manners.” “We should be like that everywhere, not just in restaurants. Right, Mom ” Angel asked. “That’s correct.
Yours,
Mary

Teaching good manners to kids is very important. It’s best to let them develop good table manners when they are young. So they can carry these when they grow up.

Kids should say “please” and “thank you” when asking for things on the table. They should not reach over (越过) other people to get things that they want.
Teach your children not to eat with their mouths open or talk with their mouths full. If it’s hard for them to understand, try showing them how it looks and sounds. When they see this, they’ll understand how they look to other people. They should also eat slowly and take small bites (咬).

If we treat others like how we wanted to be treated, we won’t interrupt or eat in ways that would be difficult to be looked at.”

Not all cultures use the handshake, and people in many Asian cultures do not always touch another person. The traditional greeting in China was to cover the left hand with the right and bow. Japanese people might cover one hand with the other and depending on whom they are greeting, bow slightly or quite low. In India, Hindu people join their hands in front of their faces and bow their heads. A Muslim (穆斯林) will touch his heart, mouth and forehead to show respect. Even young people in the West now give each other the “high five”, when they slap each other’s hands high in the air. They are all keeping their hands busy.
