I saved the grain carefully and finally had enough to plant. I built a wall around my garden to keep the wild goats away.
Then when my crop bore its fruit, the birds discovered it. The birds were not afraid of my dog at all. I shot them but as soon as I walked away, they came back. At last, I killed some birds and hung them among the crop, hoping they would serve as the scarecrows, which turned out to be successful. By harvest time, I had nearly two bushels of rice and two and a half bushels of wheat.
With my new grain to store, I found a new problem. The fine grain ran through my baskets. It took me nearly two months to form and dry two ugly pots-one for rice and one for wheat.
Next, I formed a clay oven and made some other tools from hard wood and cloth to bake bread. I made and baked bread in my oven. I spent the third year on the island in farming and baking.
Soon after that, I began to think of my days sailing in a tidy boat with Xury. I wished to have a boat and explore the island by sea.
I tried to turn over the ship’s boat that I had seen washed up, but failed. I was still determined to have a boat, so I chose a strong tree and spent weeks cutting it down. Then it took me months to turn it from tree to boat.
When it was time to launch, I realized I had my boat too far from the nearest stream. The boat was far too heavy for me to move. I tried bringing the water to the boat instead of the boat to the water. I soon saw it would take me twenty years of constant (不断的) labor.
I celebrated my fourth year on the island with two boats, but I was no closer to a sea journey.
1.Why did Robinson kill some birds and hang them among the crops
2.What was “a new problem”
3.Why did Robinson give up bringing the water to the boat
4.How long did Robinson stay on this island
5.Was there any hope for him to leave the island and go back home
Different weather makes people feel different. It influences (影响) health, feelings and intelligence (智力).
In August, it is very hot and wet in the southern part of the United States. People there have some health problems during this month. In the Northeast and the Middle West, it is very hot at some times and very cold at other times. People in these states have more heart trouble after the weather changes in February or March.
The weather also has a strong influence on people’s feelings. Winter may be a bad time for thin people. They might feel unhappy during cold weather. But fat people may have a hard time in hot summer. They feel hot and get angry easily.
The weather can also influence intelligence. For example, in a scientific report, the IQ (智商) of a group of students was very high when a very strong wind came, but after the strong wind, their IQ was 10% lower. The wind can help people have higher intelligence. Very hot weather, on the other hand, can make it lower. Students in many schools of the United States often get worse grades on exams in July and August, the hottest months of the year.

7.How might thin people feel during cold weather
8.Who may have a hard time in hot summer
9.When was the IQ of the group of students high in a scientific report

Most of us know about the weather from the weather report. However, we can know about the weather by ourselves. It is a fun hobby, and it can also be a useful skill if you enjoy outdoor activities, such as hiking or camping.
Watch the wind and air. Notice the direction of the wind. Wind comes when air moves. You can use grass or flowers to decide the direction of the wind. Throw your grass or flowers into the air and watch the direction of the wind. When the wind comes from the east and it is raining in the east, it will bring the moisture (潮气) to you.
Watch the smoke (烟) from a fire. The air pressure decides what direction the smoke will go. At high pressure, the smoke will go up into the air. If the pressure is low, it will be back down around the fire. If you see the smoke back down, the bad weather is on the way.
Take a deep breath. Close your eyes and smell the air. Smell becomes wet right before a storm. You should also notice a kind of bad smell because plants give off the special smell. If you start to smell this, it means that a storm is coming.
11.Where can we know about the weather according to the passage
We can know about the weather from the and ourselves.

“Fall” and “Autumn”
What season is it in October If you ask people from UK, they will tell you it’s “autumn”. But if you go to US, you will find that people use “autumn” or “fall”.
According to Dictionary.com, both words have been around for a long time, but neither of them was first to describe this season. During this season, crops would become ripe (成熟) and farmers would have a big harvest. So in Old English, this season was simply called “harvest”.
Then, in the 1600s, more people left their farms and moved to cities. With fewer people farming, the word “harvest” became less useful. English speakers needed a different name for the season. They knew leaves fell from trees during the season, so people started calling it “the fall of the leaf”, or “fall” for short.
But at the end of the 1600s, autumn, from the French word “autompne” and the Latin “autumnus”, came to English. “Fall” as the word for this season disappeared slowly.
At the same time, people in UK were making their first trip to North America. They brought the words “fall” and “autumn” with them. That’s why today Americans have two names for one season.
16.According to the passage, either autumn or fall is every year.

Chapter 2
From Alice in Wonderland
Alice was not hurt, so she jumped to her feet in a moment. She looked up, and found the White Rabbit was still in sight. She was close behind it when she turned the corner, but the Rabbit was no longer to be seen. She found herself in a long, low hall.
There were doors all around the hall, but they were all locked.
Alice walked sadly down the middle, wondering how she was ever to get out again.
Suddenly, she came upon a little three-legged table. There was nothing on it but a tiny golden key, and Alice’s first idea was that this might belong to one of the doors of the hall.
But, alas! Either the locks (锁) were too large, or the key was too small. However, on the second time round, she came upon a low curtain she had not noticed before and behind it was a little door.

Do April showers really bring May flowers The exact effect of rainfall depends on what type of flower you’re talking about. A perennial (多年生的) plant lives for several years and has flowers every year. Some perennials, especially those in warmer areas, might bloom in March or April. The previous(先前的) month’s rainfall usually has little effect on when these flowers bloom.
The roots of perennials are always in the ground. Therefore, their health and growth depend on the rainfall over many months. During the course of blooming, too much rainfall could actually be harmful. Some flowers are more likely to be affected by diseases if there is too much rain.
Annuals(一年生植物)grow and die within one year. Annual flowers are different from perennials. They need enough water to grow. For them, what matters is the amount of rainfall in the months after they’re planted, not the months before.
So what really brings May flowers There’s one factor that is much more important than rainfall: temperature. It determines when a flower will bloom. When the average temperature approaches spring—like weather, flowers will begin to bloom.

One day, you open the fridge and find some moldy(发霉的) food. But before you can throw it away, your mother stops you. She doesn’t want to waste food. She cuts off the moldy part and eats the rest. Is it safe to do this
Mold(霉菌) can grow on almost all kinds of food. Mold is usually green, white, black or gray. Mold makes food soft and changes its color. Moldy food tastes quite bad—and it’s not safe to eat.
If you find mold in soft food, just throw it away. Bread, tomatoes and hot dogs are soft food. This kind of food allows mold to easily grow below its surface.
But it’s easy to remove mold from hard food. The mold can’t grow very deeply inside this kind of food. According to the BBC, you should cut about 2.5 cm around and below the mold and remove it. It’s OK to cut the moldy parts out of hard food and eat the rest. But if the food is completely covered with mold, you should still throw it away.
Most kinds of mold are bad for us. But some kinds of mold can be used to make food. For example, penicillium(青霉菌) can be used to make many types of cheeses, such as blue cheese. These cheeses are safe to eat and they’re quite delicious as well.

When we talk of plants, most of us will think of things that grow from the ground and have green leaves, but there are plants that do not look or act like other plants. Some of these belong to a special class of plants called fungi (真菌).
Fungi may appear almost everywhere. They commonly grow in wet places where they can get food and water easily. Because fungi do not have green leaves to make their own food, fungi must take their food from animals, other plants or water. Some fungi live on dead or rotting (腐烂的) wood, while others grow on living trees or in dirt. Mushrooms (蘑菇) are the best-known fungi.
There are many kinds of mushrooms appearing in all shapes and sizes. For example, cauliflower (菜花) mushrooms are found in the forest from July to October. They can grow to be as heavy as fifty pounds! They grow at the foot of trees. Squirrel’s bread (松茸) is another kind of wild mushrooms. Its appearance and use can explain its name. These fungi look like small golden cakes. Squirrels can easily eat them or carry them off to their holes to eat later.
The mushrooms in food shops are carefully grown by people and they are safe to eat. People are warned never to touch or taste wild mushrooms because some of them are deadly. Even less dangerous ones can still make a person very sick.

Pan Hui is a 14-year-old Beijinger. Like many only children in China, Pan is happy and confident(自信), except when he feels lonely from time to time. “It’s not fun, especially when I travel with my parents. How I wish I could have a brother or sister.” She said.
It could be time for Pan to realize her dream. Several months ago, China ended its long-lasted one-child policy(政策), and now every couple can have two children. But what would it be like growing up with a sibling(兄弟姐妹)
A sibling can stop children from having feelings such as loneliness and fear, according to Laura, a professor from Brigham Young University, US. “Siblings give kids something that parent can’t”.
But there are downsides too. You need to share things with your siblings, including attention from parents, toys, the TV. There could be lots of competition, name calling(吵架), and even hair-pulling.
Even the birth of order can make a difference. US psychologist(心理学家) Kevin said the birth order decides how parents treat their children. It will then lead to different characteristics in children. Kevin explained that parents are usually very nervous and strict on the first child. So firstborns are often responsible(负责的) and have success more easily. When the couple have a second child, they are more relaxed. So late-born kids are usually humorous and creative.

Mushrooms are not only delicious. They are also filled with healthy materials like vitamin D and B.Some people enjoy eating mushrooms. They also like to collect them in the wild. But that is not for everyone. While some people are smart enough to-collect mushrooms in the wild and eat them, many people are not. Eating the wrong mushroom can make you sick or even dead.
Therefore, buying them is the easier and safer choice. However, you can grow mushrooms yourself inside your own home. Here are the things you need to prepare:
◆A wooden or plastic box which needs to be about 15 centimeters deep and large enough to hold your harvest. Don’t bring non-mushroom fungal (真菌) into the box.
◆Growing soil mixed with compost (堆肥) and other materials. The materials depend on the mushrooms. White button mushrooms grow better in a half-and-half mix of compost and well-rotted manure (粪肥). Oyster mushrooms do well in wheat straw.
◆Fungal spores (孢子) that should be spread over the soil. Water the spore-topped soil material gently twice a day. To grow quickly and effectively, it should be kept away from direct sunlight.
Mushrooms usually grow, or “fruit”, within a week or two. They nearly double in size daily until they are finished growing. Mushrooms will be ready to harvest when their tops are fully open. That will be in nearly three to four weeks. Use a sharp, clean knife to cut them at soil level and enjoy your harvest!

In the town of Lampang (南邦府) in northern Thailand, there is an unusual group of musicians. They play different kinds of music. Both children and adults love this group elephants.
These musical elephants are from the Thai Elephant Conservation Center (TECC) in Lampang. The TECC protects elephants. It teaches people to understand and care for these huge, but gentle animals. And, like many zoos around the world, the TECC encourages elephants to paint.
Richard Lair works with the TECC. He knew that elephants hear better than they see. So he had an idea: maybe they can play music. To test this idea, Lair and a friend started the Thai Elephant Orchestra. During a performance, the elephants play instruments. The animals also use their voices and trunks (象鼻) to make sounds.
But can elephants really make music properly “Yes,” says Lair, “They’re very creative.” Humans may encourage the animals to play instruments, but the elephants make their own songs. Imagine a world with no more wild animals: no elephants, no tigers or lions. To most people, that thought is too terrible. So they are doing something about it. Betty is one of them.
Being surrounded by wild animals—feeding them and caring for them—is all Betty has wanted to do with her life. And that is exactly what she does!
Betty is the human “mother” to the 500 animals that live on her family wildlife farm in San. Antonio, Texas. On the farm, she cares for animals from all over the world. She says she loves them all. The population of giraffes in the wild has declined by 80% in the last 15 years. “I’m so glad to get help from five wildlife researchers. All our hard work helps protect giraffes living in the wild.”
Besides her animal caring, Betty also holds a monthly class, where she teaches school children about animals. Betty also opens the farm to the public. Visitors not only learn about the animals, they can also get close to them. For animals, people are part of their natural environment.
The farm is a conservation (保护) area, an educational center and an animal park. As the animals walk peacefully around the grounds, it is easy to forget that San Antonio, a busy city, is just a few minutes away.

Tomb-sweeping (扫墓) Day is also called the Qingming Festival. It’s a traditional Chinese festival on around April 5th.
It could go back to Hanshi Day (Cold Food Day) to remember the man named Jie Zitui. But people truly started to celebrate it in the year 732. So it has a long history of over 1,000 years.
