(23-24八年级下·云南昆明·期中)Once there were many thousands of Gourma Desert (沙漠) elephants in Mali, a country in West Africa. Now, there are fewer than four hundred.
Why did the number of the elephants drop so quickly On the one hand, the elephants’ main lake, their only water source (水源) dried up. On the other hand, the land which the elephants lived on was overused (过度使用) by humans.
To protect the elephants’ living environment, the Mali Elephant Project (MEP) was started in 2007. MEP met with local people and helped them make rules of using land and water. As a result, the situation became better and there was more food, forest and grassland.
However, from 2012 to 2016, poaching (偷猎) and illegal trade in the elephants increased (增加) rapidly. Eight-three elephants were lost in 2015 alone, and another fifty-one elephants were killed in 2016. “If this situation goes on, all the Gourma elephants will be killed by 2020,” said a member of MEP.

(23-24八年级下·陕西西安·阶段练习)The US Fish and Wildlife Service recently sent out a warning (警告), saying that emperor penguins in Antarctica (南极洲) are in danger of disappearing because of the rising temperature. This calls for the protections of emperor penguins under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).
Antarctica is home to seabirds that can’t fly. They need sea ice to reproduce (繁殖), look for food, and stay away from other animals. But climate (气候) change has broken the emperor penguins’ sea ice environment. If carbon emissions (碳排放) continue to rise, temperatures will also rise, and then more frozen seawater will disappear. This could lead to the disappearance of the emperor penguins in the near future.
Climate change has made emperor penguins reproduce less and less. One example is the Halley Bay group in the Weddell Sea, the second-largest penguin group in the world. Several years of poor ice conditions in areas led to the death of all baby emperor penguins in 2016.
The warning is made for humans to protect emperor penguins. It also needs the government’s help with rules on penguin protection. Shaye Wolf, an American scientist, said that emperor penguins need “climate action” at once. The penguins’ lives depend on whether our government takes strong action now to cut climate-heating fossil fuels (化石燃料) and stop the life on Earth from being harmed by climate warming.
1.What can we know about emperor penguins
A.They live in Europe. B.They reproduce quickly.
C.They can live in the polluted ice. D.They depend on sea ice to live.
2.Which writing skill is used in Paragraph 3

Luckily, the voice of MEP was heard. More organizations (组织) have joined together to educate the local people that trading elephants is against the law. Elephant poaching has dropped to a very low level. The local people have learned to live peacefully with the elephants, one of the wildlife treasures in the world.

(24-25八年级下·河北唐山·阶段练习)Cheetahs (猎豹) and other wild cats (大型猫科动物) are in danger of dying out because they have few places to live and people hunt (猎杀) them. Can we help these wild cats in danger
Wildlife scientists hope so. They are trying to protect the wild cats by letting people know about their situation and thinking out some ways to keep them safe.
Cheetahs are the world’s fastest land animals. Most cheetahs live in Africa. In the past 100 years, the number of cheetahs living in the wild has changed from 100 000 to fewer than 12 000.
Good news for cheetahs at the Saint Louis Zoo! Three baby cheetahs that were born in November are growing up at the Saint Louis Zoo in Missouri. “The babies do well,” the zoo’s worker, Steve, said. “They are very active and playing with each other or with their mom.”
By raising baby cheetahs, the zoo is working to save cheetahs from dying out. The zoo is also helping protect cheetahs in the wild. “We want children to know that cheetahs are in danger,” said Steve. “It is important to protect their living places.”
1.Why are cheetahs and other wild cats in danger of dying out
A.Because they have few places to live and people hunt them.
B.Because they are easy to be ill.
C.Because they have nothing to eat.
D.Because people send them into the zoo.
2.Which of the following is TRUE about cheetahs

A.To tell us the number of cheetahs. B.To tell us about a zoo with cheetahs.
C.To tell us the situation about cheetahs. D.To encourage us to do something for the zoo.
A.Giving an example. B.Raising a question.
C.Listing numbers. D.Comparing facts.
3.What’s the purpose of writing the passage
A.To tell people how to protect the earth.
B.To share the writer’s opinions on climate change.
C.To ask humans to take action to protect emperor penguins.
D.To introduce emperor penguins’ bad sea ice environment.

(24-25八年级上·湖北宜昌·期末)World Animal Day is on Oct. 4 every year. It is to “make the world a better place for all animals”.
In fact, protecting animals has never become more important. In September, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN,国际自然保护联盟) reported its yearly Red List update (年度红名单更新). Pandas from China were among them in 2016. They were once in danger.
China has worked for 50 years to help pandas and it is paying off. The number of pandas in China is going up. Here are two examples.
Bamboo (竹子) is pandas’ main food. And they are big eaters! A panda needs 12—38 kilograms of bamboo each day. In the 1980s, without enough food, the number of pandas dropped to just 1,200. To help the pandas, China set up 67 panda reserves (保护区). In these reserves, they planted bamboo forests.
Baby pandas are small. They can’t open their eyes when they are born. So workers need to take really good care of them in the lab.
However, there is still bad news. Earth is getting warmer. Some places will be too hot for bamboo to grow. More than a third of bamboo forests will go away in 80 years. It’s still dangerous for pandas.

(24-25八年级上·广东揭阳·开学考试)About 38,500 kinds of animals in the world are in danger. Now, you can learn about them and help them by playing a card game.
Jackson Mann is 15 years old. He is the starter of the card game called “SOS: Save Our Species (物种)”. He hopes that people can do something for endangered (濒危的) species after playing the game.
In the game, players need to collect endangered species and match (匹配) them with their right habitats (栖息地). The more endangered the species are, the more points (得分) players can get. The game finishes when there are no more cards. And the player with the most points wins the game.
Jackson had the idea for the game on a family trip to Central America three years ago. “We saw lots of wildlife and played lots of card games,” said Jackson. “I thought that it would be great if people could play cards and learn about endangered species at the same time.”

(24-25八年级上·广东深圳·期中)A small mouse named Pat at the San Diego Zoo set a new world record (纪录) for the oldest known living mouse.
Pat is a Pacific pocket mouse, and this is the smallest kind of mouse in North America. He weighs (重量是……) about as much as three coins.
Pacific pocket mice live in Southern California, usually within 3.2 kilometers of the sea. They can help spread the seeds (散播种子) of the plants that grow naturally in this area. Their digging underground also helps the plants grow.
But starting in the early 1930s, humans began taking up more and more of the area where the mice normally lived. Pacific pocket mice began disappearing. In the 1970s, scientists believed that the Pacific pocket mouse became extinct (灭绝的).
But in 1994, scientists found a small group of Pacific pocket mice in Orange County, California. Later, they found two other small groups of the mice. Starting in 2012, the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance (SDZWA) began working to help the mice by raising them. Pat was just born in the first year of that program.
In 2016, the SDZWA and several other groups helped get a group of Pacific pocket mice started in a park. Soon, the number of mice in the park began growing without any help from humans.
