In ancient China, willow branches (柳树枝) were often used as a parting (告别) gift between friends and family members. 1
One reason is that willow trees are strong. 2 Because of this unique (独特的) feature, giving a willow branch to say goodbye to loved ones is a way to tell them you hope they will easily adapt to their new living environment.
Meanwhile, in Mandarin (普通话), the pronunciation for the willow tree “liu” is similar to the character “liu”, which means asking someone to stay—only the tones (声调) are different. 3 Even though we know that they must leave, we still do like that.
4 At that time, Baqiao, a bridge in Chang’an, today’s Xi’an, was a common place to say goodbye. People often stopped there and handed willow branches to people who want to leave.
5 In The Book of Poetry, there is the line “When I left there, willows shed tears. ” At the time of the Tang and Song dynasties, such poems were common as traveling was easy and poets felt the sorrow of separation (离别). For example, Wang Wei wrote “The willows by the hotel look so fresh and green,” in his famous poem A Fond Farewell to a Friend.
A.They can live in any soil, wet or dry, north or south.
B.When the willow leaves become dark green, spring is gone.
C.It’s said that this custom became popular during the Han Dynasty.
D.Do you know why willow branches are a symbol of farewell (告别)
E.So offering a willow branch is like asking them to stay.
F.Willow branches, as a symbol (标志) of farewell, are often mentioned in poems.
The Chinese pingfeng (folding screen) is a traditional Chinese furniture (家具). It dates back to the Han Dynasty. “Pingfeng” means “keeping away from wind”, which tells us its use right from the start.
As time passes, it has been made into different sizes with colourful paintings. On screens usually is a dragon. It means light, growth, and water that gives life. It also stands for nobility (高贵) and power. The peacock (孔雀), a beautiful bird, can be seen on screens, too. It’s a symbol of long life. Beautiful flowers, which mean being rich and good luck, are also a popular design of the pingfeng. All the designs carry people’s beautiful wishes.
Behind the pingfeng lies an interesting story. In the past, the unmarried daughter of a rich family should not see or be seen by men except her father, brothers or very close male (男性) cousins. When a young man came to visit, she could secretly watch him from behind the screen which completely hid her. Her father would discuss poems with the young man and ask him to create one. If both the daughter and her father liked the young man’s poem and his looks, she might agree to marry him.
Today the pingfeng is back in fashion for its beauty and its practical (实际的) use as furniture. Acting as a moving wall, it can be the perfect match for modern sofas and walls, which adds style to them.

Imagine holding a piece of wood that tells an ancient story—this is the magic of Chinese woodcarving! Artists turn ordinary wood into great treasures. 10
When did Chinese people make woodcarving
11 It became very popular in the Tang and Song Dynasties. People used it to decorate temples, furniture, and palaces. The designs usually included flowers, animals, and characters from Chinese stories. Some old wood carvings are now in museums.
12
Artists use special tools like knives, chisels (凿子), and hammers (锤子). They work with different types of wood. First, they draw a design on the wood. Then, they cut and shape it carefully. Finally, they make it smooth and shiny. Good wood carvers need years of practice.
What is woodcarving like today
13 Some artists make traditional designs, while others create modern art. What’s more, many young people are interested in woodcarving and try to learn it to keep the tradition alive.

Back then, people believed the sound of explosions would drive away bad things. And that’s how fireworks were born! They weren’t very pretty at first, but they could drive away bad luck.
During the Song Dynasty, fireworks became more beautiful. They could change into all kinds of shapes, like flying dragons, jumping tigers, or even flowers blooming (盛开的) brightly. Fireworks became a way to make wishes.
By the time of the Yuan Dynasty, fireworks became even more amazing. At that time, fireworks were part of celebrations in the palaces. People gathered (聚集) around to watch the fireworks happily.
During the Ming Dynasty, the art of making fireworks reached its peak. Fireworks were all across China, and even spread to other countries. People at that time believed that fireworks could bring good luck and hope for the new year.

Today we learn about the Chinese flute (长笛)—a traditional musical instrument. Some scientists find it has a history of over 8,000 years. According to research, the first known Chinese flutes were made of the bones of cranes (鹤).
In ancient times, people carved the bones with great effort and put five to seven holes in them. A player holds the flute up to his mouth and straight out to the right. The air moves through the flute, and then it makes a musical sound. The player presses different keys on the flute to make different musical sounds.
Later, most flutes are made of bamboo. They are generally dissevered into two types. In the north, the flute which is used to accompany the Bangzi Opera is called Bangdi. This flute is short. In the south, the flute which is used to accompany the Kunqu Opera is called Qudi. This flute is longer and thicker than the Bangdi and the music style is gentler. Now, some flutes are even made of plastic.
Because it sounds great and is easy to learn, the Chinese flute is one of the most popular musical instruments in Asia now. You can be sure that flute makers will always be on the lookout for better quality of sound.

Ricardo Semler became boss of his father’s company in Brazil at the age of 21. The name of the company is Semco. It sold parts for ships. Semler worked like a mad man, from 7:30 am to midnight every day. One afternoon, while he was visiting a factory in New York, he fell down. The doctor said, “There’s nothing wrong with you. But if you continue like this, you’ll find a new home in our hospital.” Semler got the message. He changed the way he worked. In fact, he changed the ways his workers worked, too.
He let his workers take more responsibility so that they would be the ones worrying when things went wrong. He allowed them to set their own salaries, and he cut all the jobs he thought were unnecessary, like receptionists and secretaries.
He changed the office: instead of walls, they have plants at Semco, so bosses can’t shut themselves away from everyone else. And the workers are free to decorate their workplace as they want. As for uniforms, some people wear suits and others wear T-shirts.
Semco has flexible (弹性的) working hours: the workers decide when they need to arrive at work. Also, Semco lets its workers use the company’s machines for their own projects, and makes them take holidays for at least thirty days a year.
It sounds perfect, but does it work The answer is in the numbers: in the last six years, Semco’s revenues (收益) have gone from $35 million to $212 million. The company has grown from 800 workers to 3,000. Why
Semler says it’s because of “peer pressure (同辈压力)”. Peer pressure makes workers work hard for everyone else. If someone isn’t doing his job well, the other workers will not allow the situation to continue. In other words, Ricardo Semler treats his workers like adults rather than children, and expects them to act like responsible adults. And they do.
