Students control shadow puppets (皮影木偶) as the singing voice of 71-year-old Liu Aibang echoes (回荡) across the classroom. They use thin straight pieces of wood to make shadow puppets step onto the “stage”—a cloth screen. Those sitting in front of the stage play music on drums, suona horns (唢呐) and other instruments.
This is a Daoqing shadow puppetry class at Longdong University. Except Liu, the other performers of the show are all college students.
Starting in the Han Dynasty, Daoqing shadow puppetry has been included in the national intangible cultural heritage list (国家非物质文化遗产名录) since 2006. For years, shadow plays were welcomed by people of all ages, and were often performed during the festivals. However, with films and soap operas becoming popular in the late 1980s, many performers moved on to other jobs. Faced with the choice between protecting this art and making a good living, Liu chose to stay on.
One day in 2020, Liu received a phone call from Zhao Zhixue, head of the music school at Longdong University. Zhao told him that the school planned to introduce Daoqing shadow puppetry into college classrooms and develop young students’ long-term interest in intangible cultural heritage. Excited by the news, Liu left the farm and became a part-time teacher at the college.
Liu hopes to train more young people. “Just as true love is not a one-man show, the learning and keeping of cultural heritage needs efforts (努力) from both the old and the young,” Liu said.
28.What did many performers do when films and soap operas became popular in the late 1980s

We'll save bits of time here and there, add it up, and we will finally get to everything we want to do. But after studying how successful people spend their time and looking at their schedules (时刻表), I think this idea has it completely backward. We don't build the lives we want by saving time. We build the lives we want, and then time saves itself.
I recently did a time diary project looking at 1,001 days in the lives of unusually busy women. They had demanding (要求高的,费力的) jobs, sometimes their own businesses, kids to care for, maybe parents to care for.
One of the women whose time log I studied goes out on a Wednesday night. She comes home to find that her water heater has broken, and there is now water all over her rooms. If you've ever had anything like this happen to you, you know how frightening it is. So she's dealing with the mess that night, and the next day she's got plumbers (水管工) coming in. The day after that, a cleaning worker comes to repair the floor. It takes seven hours of her week. Seven hours. That's like finding an extra hour in the day.
But I'm sure if you had asked her at the start of the week, "Could you find seven hours to go to the gym " I'm sure she would've said, "No! Can't you see how busy I am " Yet when she had to find seven hours because there is water all over her rooms, she found seven hours. And what this shows us is that time is highly changeable. We cannot make more time, but time will reach for what we choose to put into it.
Small moments can have great power. You can use your bits of time for bits of joy. Maybe it's choosing to read something wonderful on the bus on the way to work. I know when I had a job that required two bus rides every morning, I used to go to the library on weekends to get books to read. It made the whole experience almost enjoyable.
It's about looking at the whole of one's time and seeing where important things can go. I truly believe this. There is time. Even if we are busy, we have time for what matters. And when we focus on what matters, we can build the lives we want in the time we've got.
31.What do we know about the women in the speaker's project
A.They had a busy work schedule.
B.They were single business women.
C.They followed their schedule strictly.
D.They had to look after both their kids and parents.
32.What does the woman do when she finds her home a mess
A.She is too worried to do anything.
B.She deals with it in an orderly way.
C.She fixes the broken water heater by herself.
D.She spends seven hours thinking of what to do next.
33.What can we learn from the passage
A.It is important to set and achieve life goals.
B.The key to success is to make full use of time.
C.Time saves itself when we focus on what matters.
D.It's unwise to make your work schedule too busy.
D
The Chinese language differs from Western languages in that, instead of an alphabet (字母表), it uses characters (汉字) which stand for ideas, objects or deeds. Chinese words are formed by putting together different characters. In many cases, a single character can also make up a word. As one kind of the most ancient characters, Chinese characters have played an important part in the development of Chinese culture. At first, ancient Sumerian and ancient Egyptian symbols existed (存在), but only Chinese characters are still in use today. The history of the Chinese language can be examined by looking at how these characters developed.
Chinese writing began thousands of years ago. According to an ancient story, a man named Cang Jie invented Chinese writing. One winter day while he was hunting, he saw the footprints of animals in the snow and noticed that the appearance of each one was different. Then he had the idea that he could use different shapes to represent different objects. The first Chinese characters were drawings of physical objects. Some characters have been simplified (简化) and others have been made more difficult over time.
However, as a whole, the characters have developed from drawings into standard forms. The character for a mountain was at first three mountaintops together. This became one mountaintop and three lines, and over time turned into the character used nowadays.
Sometimes to express ideas, some characters were made by putting two or more characters together. For example, “rest” was made up of the characters for a man and a tree. The character “prisoner” was formed with a “man” inside a square. Other characters were developed for directions and numbers. It is easy to distinguish (区别) their meanings by looking at them, for example, the characters for “up” and “down”, which are opposites of each other.
Though these kinds of characters show meanings, one of their shortcomings is that they do not show how they should be pronounced. Therefore, a way was developed to have one part of a character represent the meaning and the other suggest the pronunciation. Many Chinese characters used today were made this way.
In the 1950s the Chinese government introduced simplified Chinese characters in the hope to make learning to read and write more understandable to a large number of people, which would increase literacy (读写能力) across the country. And now they have widespread use in China’s mainland.
34.How did the writer introduce the Chinese characters
A.By giving examples. B.By providing causes.
C.By expressing opinions. D.By comparing (比较) facts.
35.The sentence “Not all characters were developed from drawings of objects.” would best be placed at the beginning of _________.
A.Paragraph 5 B.Paragraph 4 C.Paragraph 3 D.Paragraph 2
36.What can we learn from the passage
A.Chinese characters have turned into standard forms, which are easier than before.
B.Chinese characters we use today have been accepted by large numbers of people.
C.Chinese words and English words are both formed by putting alphabets and characters together.
D.Chinese characters existed at the very beginning and are still in use today like other ancient symbols.
37.What might be the best title for the passage
A.How to form Chinese characters.
B.The history of the Chinese language.
C.The development of Chinese characters.
D.The difference between Chinese and Western language.

Last January, my wife received a 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzle as a birthday gift. We knew the right steps to complete it. We dealt with the frame first and then the large objects with special lines and colors. My wife mainly used the color and shape of the pieces to help with the puzzle, but I paid much attention to the picture on the box as a guide. And so began our long journey of the puzzle.
What is a jigsaw First, it is a puzzle to be solved. But unlike many puzzles, it can be solved with some talent and a stubborn determination (决心). In our case, 3 to 4 hours a day for 15 days.
In fact, a jigsaw puzzle is a testament to one’s character. You use lots of time to complete this useless task for no better reason than not giving up. I recorded the journey on Facebook and received much encouragement along the way from many unknown people.
So what to do with the completed puzzle It is too big and I have nowhere to put it. I can do nothing but to break it up and put it back in the box. It took 15 days to put the puzzle together and only two minutes to break it up.
When our pieces were back in the box, it was clear that the goal was never to complete the puzzle at all. Rather it was just a method to fill time. In this way, jigsaw puzzles are like life itself: It’s all about the journey and the destination (终点) is not very important.

【详解】句意:——他喜欢的东西听起来很棒,也很有趣。——是的,但它很危险。此句的主语是从句“What he enjoys”,时态为一般现在时,谓语动词应用单数,sound“听起来”,其三单形式是sounds,故填sounds。
51.— Daniel, do you think the rain forests will disappear from the earth one day
— Unless humans (stop) from cutting down trees from now on.
【答案】are stopped
【难度】0.4
【知识点】一般现在时的被动语态、条件状语从句的主将从现
【详解】句意:——丹尼尔,你认为有一天雨林会从地球上消失吗?——除非从现在起阻止人类砍伐树木。stop sb from doing sth表示“阻止某人做某事”,此处“某人”是“humans人类”,作主语,与“stop阻止”构成被动关系,“Unless”引导的条件状语从句用一般现在时的被动语态am/is/are+done,主语是复数,be动词用are,stop的过去分词是stopped。故填are stopped。
52.— He never lied to his mother or father.
— (either) did I. I was a very honest kid.
【答案】Neither
【难度】0.4
【知识点】neither、部分倒装、either/neither
【详解】句意:—— 他从不对父母撒谎。—— 我也是。我是个很诚实的孩子。根据“I was a very honest kid.”可知,我也不撒谎;再者根据“neither+助动词+sb.”和英文提示可知,neither符合句意,位于句首,首字母大写。故填Neither。
53.Not only my parents but my little sister (prepare) for the birthday party when I got home as my birthday was around the corner.

【难度】0.4
【知识点】prepare、过去进行时含when、while、not only...but also
【详解】句意:当我回家时,不仅我的父母,而且我的小妹妹都在为生日聚会做准备,因为我的生日就要到了。prepare动词,意为“准备”;根据“when I got home”可知,当我回家时,他们“正在准备”,句子发生在过去,并且是过去正在进行的动作,用过去进行时,结构是was/were doing;not only...but also不仅……而且……,连接两个主语时,谓语动词与最近的主语保持一致,因此是was preparing。故填was preparing。
Title: Jigsaw puzzles

【答案】54.started/began 55.while 56.encouraged 57.space 58.matters
54.根据“We dealt with the frame first and then the large objects with special lines and colors.”,可知他们先从处理框架开始,然后处理大块的碎片。空处缺少动词,且意为“开始”可用动词start或begin,和空后“moved”并列且时态一致,start过去式为started,begin过去式为began。故填started/began。
55.根据“My wife mainly used the color and shape of the pieces to help with the puzzle, but I paid much attention to the picture on the box as a guide”,可知作者和妻子一起拼图,但是采取了不同的方法,表动作同时进行且对比明显,可用连词“while”连接。故填while。
56.根据“I recorded the journey on Facebook and received much encouragement along the way from many unknown people”,可知很多不认识的人鼓励我们。and后并列完整的句子,空处缺少动词,文章的事情发生在过去,用一般过去时态,encourge过去式为encouraged。故填encouraged。
57.根据“It is too big and I have nowhere to put it. I can do nothing but to break it up and put it back in the box”,可知作者由于拼图占据太大空间而又拆掉它。too much后加不可数名词,“空间”用space。
58.根据“It’s all about the journey and the destination (终点) is not very important.”,可知过程比结果更重要,空处缺少动词且意为“重要”用matter,主语“the journey”为名词单数,谓语动词用单三matters。故填matters。

【答案】easily found

故填easily found。

B.Everyone should spread our traditional culture to the world.
C.Everyone should work hard to learn and keep cultural heritage.
D.Everyone should write something about the intangible cultural heritage
