Joana lives in San Francisco. Mikaela lives in Rock Springs. They met at Udaleku. Udaleku is a two-week Basque summer camp which provides Basque cultural experiences. The two girls may live in different places, but the friendship they’ve formed at camp has led to them visiting at each other’s homes and meeting up at other Basque cultural events.

Mikaela: I had heard about the camp through my parents and through other kids in my local Basque club. It seemed like a simple decision to at least try it out.
Joana: When I was seven years old, my mother taught at the camp held in San Francisco. I hung around the Basque Cultural Center, and I saw how much fun the classes were. When I was ten years old, my mom said I could go if I wanted to.
What activities did you enjoy while at camp
Mikaela: Euskara (Basque language) classes and Basque sports such as pilota. I learned to play the txistu (a flute-like instrument), and I learned traditional Basque dances and songs.
Joana: I enjoyed all the activities. And there was always something new to learn. I really enjoyed the dance. I’ve been part of the Basque dance group in San Francisco since I was six, and I like learning new dances.
What keeps you coming back to camp year after year
Mikaela: The friendships I have made through the camp are stronger than a lot of friendships I have made with people I see every day. To be a true Basque American, you embrace the culture and learn as much as you possibly can.
Joana: Going to camp allowed me to see my friends who I rarely saw during the year. It was nice to be able to look forward to spending time with good friends who understand what it is to be Basque and who join in the same activities as I do.
28. What is the relationship between Mikaela and Joana
A. Friends. B. Neighbours.
C. Host and guest. D. Volunteer and camper.
29. Which question is the most suitable for___________

A. By playing only Basque sports and games.
B. By teaching children about Basque history in class.
C. By organizing trips to the Basque country every year.
D. By encouraging children to join in Basque cultural activities.
C
The bell rang. I picked up my backpack and headed for Writing Club.
“Today, we’ll share stories with critique partners,” said Miss Lisa.
My partner, Penny, sat across from me. We shared our stories nervously. While I had no trouble coming up with ideas, I did have problems with spelling. And grammar. And punctuation.
I read her story without stopping. It was about a homeless dog named Sunny who saved a family during a storm. Finally, the family welcomed Sunny.
“Wow, excellent story! I really love it!” I said.
“Yours too.” But she did not even look at me as she passed mine back.
When the club ended, Penny jumped up and picked up her backpack. Everything fell out. I noticed a book named Sunny the Brave. The description matched Penny’s story exactly. She had copied it! I thought about telling Miss Lisa, but she had already left.
Outside of the school, I found Penny on a bench. “You dropped this,” I held out the book. She looked up, tears in her eyes. Suddenly, I wasn’t angry any more. My job as her critique partner was to give helpful feedback, not make her feel bad. But what could I say
After getting home, I decided to ask mom what I should do. I found her in the kitchen making dinner with dad. Dad cut vegetables into perfect shapes. Mom mixed a sauce on the stove.
“Aidan, you’re just in time,” Mom said and held out a spoonful of sauce. “Taste this.”
“It’s good, but I think ...”
“It needs something, right ” she said. “I agree.”
“Here’s a measuring spoon,” Dad said, “so you can make sure to use the right amount.”
“I have an idea!” Mom added a teaspoon of a new spice into the sauce. “Now what did you want to talk about ”
I realized that Mom and Dad had different skills, making them a great creative team. With Dad’s attention to detail and Mom’s sense of adventure, their dinners became delicious.
“I think you already helped me,” I told her.
At school the next morning, I found Penny at her locker.
“I thought I would love writing, but I’m terrible at it,” she said. “I never have a single idea.”
“Well. I have ideas, but my sentences aren’t always the best. I wish I could write like you do.”
“I’d rather have ideas than write perfect sentences.”
“I had a new idea. I bet we could come up with something great! Let’s talk to Miss Lisa ...”
31. Which role should “critique partners” play in the writing club
A. Competing to see who does better. B. Avoiding giving advice to the other.
C. Supporting each other to improve. D. Working on pointing out mistakes.
32. How did I feel after talking with Penny at the locker
A. Hopeful. B. Surprised. C. Peaceful. D. Ashamed.
33. What can we infer from the passage about Aidan and Penny
A. Aidan will be the big mouth to tell Miss Lisa.
B. Neither of them will be in the soup about the task.
C. Penny is the best word master in the class.
D. Both of them regret having lied to Miss Lisa.
D
If you’ve ever watched a pet dog getting up from its bed and spreading out, with its front paws on the floor and its tail pointing up in the air, you’ll know where the downward-facing dog pose gets its name. You’ll have noticed that many other well-known yoga poses take their names from animals too. But just why is it that so many poses are based on animals, insects, and even birds
To understand where these poses came from you have to think like an ancient yogi. The practice of yoga started many thousands of years ago. There were no cars, computers, high-rise buildings, or playgrounds, so instead people looked to the natural world for inspiration (灵感).
Dawattie Basdeo teaches yoga to children and young people. She explains, “Ancient yogis sat in nature and watched the world around them. They would have been watching the way that animals moved and thinking about copying those shapes. Yoga is about understanding how the world works and your place within it through movement and meditation (冥想).”
Young children are flexible (柔韧的). But as humans grow up, they spend more time sitting at desks or travelling in cars, and their flexibility decreases. Animals don’t have this problem—in fact, they often depend on their bodies and their ability to move to survive.
Dawattie says, “Thinking about animal forms and shapes can make the different yoga poses easy to understand and remember. When you think of the way a dog spreads out, you can easily picture what a downward-facing dog pose might look like. ①A clear picture will come to your mind.”
Yoga is also a spiritual practice, where you think about improving your self-awareness as you move, hold positions, pay attention to your breathing, and meditate.②
Some breathing exercises practised in yoga also take inspiration from nature, such as Bhramari Pranayama—or bee breathing—where the breath sounds like the buzzing of a bumblebee.③
Along with taking inspiration from the living beings around them, the ancient yogis were also inspired by the landscapes of the natural world. ④There are postures that mirror the calmness of a mountain or the strength and balance of a tall tree.
“Humans think of themselves as being at the top of the species ladder,” says Dawattie. “But we can gain so much from the other animals on the planet.”
34 What can we learn about yoga from the passage
A. Yoga was first created for modern stress. B. Yoga suits someone with good flexibility.
C. Yoga makes humans as strong as animals. D. Yoga connects humans to the natural world.
35. The following sentence can be best placed at ________.
When you pose like a powerful lion, you might think about its strengths and characteristics.
A ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④
36. Why is “mountain” pose mentioned in the passage
A. To show yoga is about more than animals. B. To teach how to stand like a mountain.
C. To prove yoga is just for nature lovers. D. To explain what to do with the breath.
37. How does the writer share information in the passage
A. By giving facts and examples. B. By listing historical events.
C. By sharing experiences and opinions. D. By comparing different animals.

Wang Wei (701-761), often called the “Poet Buddha”, was a famous Chinese poet, painter, and government official during the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Born into a high family, he passed a difficult government exam at age 20 and worked for the emperor for many years.
Wang Wei is best known for his simple, peaceful poems about nature. His works often describe quiet scenes of mountains, rivers, and mist with few people. Experts (专家) say his poems show the beauty of the world while making readers think about what’s truly real.
But he wasn’t just an amazing poet; he was also a talented painter. He used ink and water in soft colours to create gentle, poetic pictures of nature. It was a new style of painting Chinese landscapes. Su Shi of the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127) once said that Wang Wei “had painting in his poetry” and “poetry in his painting”.
His most famous work, Wang River Collection, contains poems about traveling with his friend Pei Di. These poems have influenced writers for centuries, including modern writers who created new works based on his ideas. One poem called Weicheng Qu became a famous song called Three Repetitions on the Yangguan Tune, usually played on the guqin, an instrument Wang Wei probably played.
Scholars (学者) still study his poems today. A famous book called 19 Ways of Looking at Wang Wei examines different translations of his short poem Deer Park, showing how his simple words can have many meanings. Wang Wei’s works remain important because they help people see nature’s quiet beauty and think deeply about life.

A Class Activity I’ll Never Forget
As I look back on my junior high school years, countless memories flood into my mind. But one class activity impresses me most—role play.
Last month, our teacher divided us into pairs and asked us to act out the dialogue between Eddie and Hobo. I practised hard with my partner, trying to catch classmates’ attention. When it was our turn, we stood in front of the class, acting it out perfectly with body language. The whole class laughed and gave us a big hand.
It was the last time we did such a fun show in junior high. I’ll never forget the activity that not only taught me about the magic of English but had a lasting influence on my learning journey.
