Like many kids, last summer I learned to ride a bike. Only I am in my 30s. When I was a child, I had no one to teach me. Both of my parents made a living in a big city.
When my brother and I were made fun of because we were the only kids past 6 years old who still depended on training wheels, my grandfather took them away, but in doing that, I lost interest and trust in the activity. I was so scared—I was quite tall for my age at 7 and I was worried I’d fall off. I thought I was too old to learn too.
Not knowing how to ride didn’t bring me any trouble at first, until we moved to the suburbs, where bicycles were popular. On trips to the convenience store to buy candy with my friends, I was always the last to arrive, on foot. By then, I was 12 years old.
In my early 30s, I remember feeling envious (嫉妒) as I watched children as young as 3 learn to ride bikes. Among them were my neighbors whom I would sometimes take care of. Then something changed. The fear within was still there, but something much stronger was taking over.
I decided to join a women’s bike-riding organization. There, I stood in a park, decided to overcome my fear. Meeting women from different backgrounds, all searching for cycling skills with different reasons, made my determination (决心) stronger. Before long, I was riding confidently.
With the joy of riding, I bought my own bike, not just for getting around but to get back lost time. It wasn’t simply a bike; it meant a chance I missed earlier. I completely lost myself in the experience, enjoying the beautiful scenery.
8. The writer lost interest in riding a bike because ________.
A. no one taught her how to ride a bike B. there was no need for her to do it
C. she was afraid to ride without training wheels D. her grandpa didn’t support her anymore
9. What made the writer finally decide to learn to ride a bike
A. Moving to the countryside. B. Being the last one to the store.
C. Watching young kids ride bikes. D. Joining a bike-riding club.
10. In the writer’s mind, the bike was ________.
A. a sense of the freedom B. a tool for making money
C. a connection with others D. a way to recall her past time
11. The best title of the passage can probably be ________.
A. Riding for fun B. Riding over fear C. Riding all the way D. Riding with friends
D
We know AI isn’t a real person. But a lot of us act as if it is. In a survey of 2,000 people in the US, 48 percent thought we should be polite when talking to AI.
Scientists from the Imperial College London in the UK found something similar recently. They saw that people often treat AI agents like social beings. They show sympathy and even protect them. In an experiment, 244 volunteers played an online ball game with an AI bot. A pretend volunteer was also there and sometimes didn’t give the ball to the AI on purpose. When the scientists watched the game, they found that most of the time, the volunteers tried to make it fair for the bot by giving it the ball more.
This finding matches the basic ideas of media equation theory. This theory was made by scientists at Stanford University in the US in the 1990s. It says we often respond (回应) to media and technology like we do to real people and places, not just as tools. While this can make humans and AI work well together, it also has risks. Especially when AI bots are made to act like “friends” to people. For example, there’s Replika (聊天机器人). It’s an AI companion chatbot that started in 2017 and has about 2 million users around the world. Its website says, “Your Replika will always be on your side no matter what.” But the AI’s support became dangerous when it made Jaswant Singh Chail, a young man in the UK, want to kill the Queen of England. He tried in December 2021 but was stopped in time. Still, he got a nine-year sentence.
Scientists at Imperial College London said companies should not make AI too much like a real person in their design. This can help people know the difference between virtual and real.
12. Why did the volunteers help the AI bot during the online ball game
A. They were required to treat all players equally.
B. They felt pressured to follow the rules of the game.
C. They found it more interesting to involve the AI bot more.
D. They sympathized with the AI bot and treated the AI bot like a social being.
13. What does the underlined word mean in Para. 3
A. 句子 B. 休假 C. 判刑 D. 命题
14. What is a potential risk of AI bots acting as “friends” for human users
A. They may waste users’ time. B. They may encourage harmful behavior.
C. They may isolate users from reality. D. They may misuse users’ personal data.
15. How do researchers at Imperial College London advise on the design of AI agents
A. Controlling their level of humanness.
B. Improving their interaction performance.
C. Programming them to ignore negative behavior.
D. Equipping (装备) them with advanced learning theories.

Redefining Victory
About 30, 000 people are running today in the world’s oldest annual (年度的) mara-thon. Four figures have found their own special kinds of victory along those 42.2 kilometers in Boston.
“Dad, when we’re running, my disability seems to disappear.” Rick Hoyt was born unable to use his voice, arms or legs. Doctors advised his parents to send him away, but they chose to raise Rick themselves. One day Rick said he wanted to run in a race to raise money to help support a wounded schoolmate. So his father, Dick Hoyt, started pushing Rick in a specially-built wheelchair in races. Together they completed 32 Boston Marathons. A statue (雕像) of “Team Hoyt” now stands near the marathon’s starting line. In 2021, Dick Hoyt died. Speaking through his computer, Rick said, “He was my motor; I was his heart.”
“Women aren’t allowed and…are not physiologically (生理上) able.” Bobbi Gibb loved running in 1966 when she applied for the Boston Marathon. But the response was a refusal letter that said women weren’t able to run marathons! At first, Bobbi had wanted to run for fun. But in the face of such sexist ignorance (性别歧视), she had something to prove. Determined to run the race, Bobbi hid in some bushes, wearing her brother’s shorts and a hoodie. After the marathon began, she sneaked (潜行) onto the course and finished faster than two-thirds of the men.
“I’m going to finish this race—on my hands and knees, if I have to.” One year later, Kathrine Switzer entered for the race with her initials (姓名的首字母) to hide her gender (性别). During the marathon, an angry official stopped her and tried to tear (撕下) her racing numbers off her front and back! Kathrine was frightened but made up her mind to continue her race. When some reporters laughed at her and said she was never going to run again, she said she was going to run for the rest of her life!
Switzer did finish the race becoming the first woman to complete the Boston Marathon. Five years later, the Boston Marathon finally allowed women. Today 45 percent of the runners are women.
Dick and Rick, Bobbi and Kathrine are often called “trailblazers (开拓者).” Butanother word might be better: champions (冠军)。
