Here comes a time for every family when the tables turn and the parent has to answer to the child. Mine came recently when my wife and I visited our son in Los Angeles.
“Dad, don’t leave the water running when you brush your teeth,” Nathaniel admonished on our first night. All right, I figured, this is California, where drought is a concern. But then more followed. Not to leave my awkward walking shoes sitting out, and did I even need such ugly footwear Don’t wear a neck warmer when walking the dogs in the morning - it will warm up when we get to the park. And do you have to take a shower before we drive to Topanga
At the beginning, I wondered how I raised such a bossy child. But I recalled my own words when he was young: “Someday, you’ ll have your own home and can live however you want. Until then, do as we say.” Now,it was payback time.
I remembered being angry at my own father’s commands growing up, how he always tidied my desk or came into my room at dusk to close the windows. And so I smilingly followed Nathaniel’ s nagging (唠叨).
On our last afternoon, we were walking along ElMatador Beach and hit an extended patch of rocks - clearly the end of the line, I thought. Nathaniel wouldn’t hear of it and encouraged me to walk across one largest one to the next, patiently telling me where to place my arthritic (关节炎的) feet and hands as ocean waves came close. I was terrified, but after a couple hundred yards we eventually reached a fresh sandy beach.
“You did it! I’m really proud,” he said, smiling, as if I’d just learned to ride a bike. It was then that I knew for sure that the son also rises to fatherhood.
4. What does the underlined word “admonished” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Warned gently but firmly. B. Explained loudly but lovingly.
C. Announced officially and clearly. D. Inspired deeply and indirectly.
5. Why did the author refer to his father
A. For memory. B. For reflection. C. For encouragement. D. For comparison.
6. What was the writer’s attitude towards his son at last
A. Annoyed. B. Regretful. C. Appreciative. D. Unsatisfied.
7. What might be the best title of the passage
A. The Role Switch: Parent to Pupil B. The Bossy Son: Nathaniel’s Takeover
C. The Beach Challenge: Crossing the Rocks D. The Power of Words: Nagging to Change
C
There are millions — possibly billions — of ponds (池塘).Yet for a century or so, they are poorly understood and scientists have paid them very little attention. This neglect (忽视) might not have mattered if it were not for increasing evidence that ponds are extremely important habitats for wildlife.
Ponds are being shown more bio-diverse than rivers or lakes. Interestingly, this seems to be partly due to the small size of ponds, which allows them to have a wide range of conditions. The community in a pond with clear water will be very different to that in a nearby seasonal pond made cloudy by farm animals. Ponds show far greater variation than rivers and streams, as flowing water tends to equalize water chemistry.
So why have we ignored such a vital part of the natural world A key reason appears to be the bias (偏见) we humans have where we assume that if something is small, it can’t be all that important. Rather than study ponds, scientists in the past typically headed for the largest lake or river they could find.
Most of us also devalue ponds because we assume they are artificial habitats: we look at the human-made examples around us and don’t realize that these waters have a deeply ancient origin. In our new book Ponds, Pools and Puddles, we show that ponds have clearly existed on Earth as long as there has been land and water and the geological record shows they have been a constant presence.
Now, views are taking on new shapes. Last year, the Ramsar Convention, an international agreement, introduced a proposal on small wetlands, including ponds, giving crucial recognition to them. And the European Union-funded PONDER FUL project is gathering data on Europe’s ponds.
In a world where freshwater faces big challenges, creating and protecting ponds provides a ray of hope: a piece of natural ecological (生态的) engineering we can easily achieve to help support one of the most threatened bits of the environment.
8. What may contribute to the biodiversity of ponds
A. The nearby animals. B. The constant temperature water.
C. Their diverse conditions. D. Their regularly changing conditions.
9. What caused ponds to be neglected
A. People’s love for nature. B. Insufficient ponds for research.
C. People’s mistaken belief of ponds. D. Lacking scientific research methods.
10. Why is “PONDERFUL project” mentioned
A. To promote the Ramsar Convention.
B. To prepare for the research on ponds
C. To highlight the importance of small wetlands.
D. To show the changing attitudes towards ponds.
11. What can we conclude from the last paragraph
A. Penny wise, pound foolish. B. A small key opens a big door.
C. Small streams make great rivers D. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
D
Is it true that our brain alone is responsible for human cognition (认知) What about our body Is it possible for thought and behaviour to originate from somewhere other than our brain Psychologists who study Embodied Cognition (EC) ask similar questions. The EC theory suggests our body is also responsible for thinking or problem-solving.
If you think about it for a moment, it makes total sense. When you smell something good or hear amusing sounds, certain emotions are awakened. Think about how newborns use their senses to understand the world around them. They don’t have emotions so much as needs— they don’t feel sad, they’ re just hungry and need food. Even unborn babies can feel their mothers’ heartbeats and this has a calming effect. In the real world, they cry when they’ re cold and then get hugged. That way, they start to associate being warm with being loved.
Understandably, theorists have been arguing for years and still disagree on whether the brain is the nerve centre that operates the rest of the body. Older Western philosophers and mainstream language researchers believe this is fact, while EC theory holds the view that the brain and body are working together as an organic supercomputer, processing everything and forming your reactions.
Further studies have backed up the mind-body interaction, In one experiment, test subjects were asked to judge people after being handed a hot or a cold drink. They all made warm evaluations when their fingertips perceived warmth rather than coolness. And it works the other way too. In another study. subjects’ fingertip temperatures were measured after being “included” in or “rejected” from a group task. Those who were included felt physically warmer.
For further proof, we can look at the metaphors (比喻) that we use without even thinking. A kind and sympathetic person is frequently referred to as one with a soft heart and someone who is very strong and calm in difficult situations is often described as solid as a rock. And this kind of metaphorical use is common across languages.
Now that you have the knowledge of mind-body interaction, why not put the EC theory in our daily life Just give it a shot!
12. According to the author, what is the significance of EC
A. It brings us closer to the truth in human cognition.
B. It offers a clearer picture of the shape of human brain.
C. It reveals the major role of the mind in human cognition.
D. It improves our understanding of the origin of psychology.
13. Where does the newborns’ understanding of their surroundings start from
A. Their personal looks. B. Their mental needs.
C. Their inner emotions. D. Their physical feelings.
14. What does the author intend to prove by using the metaphors in Paragraph 5
A. Human speech is alive with metaphors.
B. Human senses have effects on thinking.
C Human language is shaped by visual images.
D. Human emotions are often compared to natural materials.
15. Which of the following situations is NOT the usage of EC in our daily life
A. If you are angry, think twice before action.
B. If you are cold, warm up before making any interpersonal decisions.
C. If the baby is crying hard, gentle touch from mom will calm him a bit.
D. If your friend is having a bad day, a warm cup of tea will give her a flash of pleasure.

I used to be a lonely girl sitting at the back of the classroom. Having failed the college entrance exams and changed schools twice, I seldom smiled. Every day I would sit at the desk, staring into textbooks and exercises, motionless and heavy-hearted. However, my classmates were in a different picture. They were playing, laughing and chatting delightedly. Besides, I hated it when they were always answering the teachers’ questions, loudly and confidently. Obviously, I had no friends in this fiercely competitive class.
Life is harder for senior students. Hardly does a day go by without exercises or tests. Every time when the scores came out mine wouldn’t be the first or second but last. I was especially tired of the endless exercises and exams, which I seemingly would never do well in. I was under a lot of pressure, feeling like a fish being fried in a pan.
Hanging over me was a dark cloud. The only dim light came from Mr. Smith. Every time I stepped into the classroom, he welcomed me with a warm smile; every time my gaze began to wander over the classroom or stare out of the window, his caring eyes would draw me back to his class. Besides, he was the only teacher who invited me to the office, talking about my studies and scores. I remembered when I came out of his office, I felt refreshed believing that I could work harder.
I was feeling everything was changing for the better. I prepared hard for the final exam of the first semester, desiring to prove that I was not the last one. So before Mr. Smith told us the test result, I was expecting something good in store for me.
But I was still the last one in the class. A burst of sadness and shame consuming me, I was heartbroken.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Right at that moment, Mr. Smith invited me to his office.

Dear Luke,
I hope this letter finds you well. I was thrilled to hear about your interest in traditional Chinese music and your plan to attend the Traditional Chinese Music Festival at our city cultural center.
To prepare for the festival, I have a few suggestions for you. First, it would be beneficial to familiarize yourself with some traditional Chinese musical instruments such as the guzheng (Chinese zither) or erhu (two-stringed bowed instrument). Additionally, being dressed in traditional Chinese clothing, like a qipao or a tang suit, can add to the festive atmosphere and allow you to immerse yourself in the cultural ambiance. Furthermore, it might be helpful to learn a few basic Chinese phrases related to music, such as common instrument names or musical terminologies, which will enhance your ability to communicate with fellow music enthusiasts during the festival.
May you have a truly unforgettable experience, filled with the enchanting melodies and captivating performances of traditional Chinese music!
Yours,
Li Hua

参考答案
Right at that moment, Mr. Smith invited me to his office. Hesitantly, I walked into the office. Mr. Smith greeted me with a smile. As he began talking, not about my grades or mistakes, but about my potential and perseverance, it became apparent that this talk was totally a different one. He didn’t blame me. Instead, he praised my resilience and determination. He encouraged me to embrace my struggles, reminding me that success was never a straight path. In his eyes, I could see his belief in me, and I knew I should never quit.
Finally, the college admission letter came. I held it in my shaking hands, doubting whether I was in a world of fantasy. But as I opened the envelope, I couldn’t believe my eyes. Despite all the odds, I got admitted! I stared at the letter in disbelief for a long time. It felt like the dawn after a seemingly endless night, a reward for the perseverance I didn’t know I had until Mr. Smith showed me. Tears welling up in my eyes. Mr. Smith might never know how much his encouragement might mean to me in my toughest time.
