Architectural Wonders Inspired by Nature
Beijing National Stadium, Beijing
Designed by Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron for the 2008 Olympic Games, the locals nicknamed
第 3页/共 12页
this stadium the “Bird’s Nest” before it was even completed. The spaces between the steel trusses are filled with a
translucent membrane, just as birds stuff the empty spaces in their nests with materials. The stadium accommodates
concerts and other special events, and once again hosted the Winter Olympics in 2022.
Atomium, Brussels
Originally constructed for the 1958 World’s Fair, or Expo 58, this weird building features nine interconnected
spheres (球体) measuring 335-feet high. Engineer André Waterkeyn and architects André and Jean Polak modeled
it after an iron crystal enlarged 165 billion times to represent faith in scientific progress. Today the interior is home
to a museum and several temporary exhibits.
The Cube Houses, Rotterdam
Despite all the hard angles and straight lines, architect Piet Blom actually took inspiration from a forest of
trees when designing these Dutch houses back in 1977. Each bright yellow cube is uniquely tilted (倾斜的) on its
side by 45 degrees and fixed to a hexagon-shaped pylon (六边形塔架), representing a tree. The entrance to each
three-level house lies inside the concrete “trunk” that contains a staircase.
Helix Bridge, Singapore
An international team gathered in Singapore and designed this footbridge stretching over Marina Bay, linking
the famous hotel and shopping center with the ArtScience Museum and Gardens by the Bay. The inspiration comes
from the structure of a DNA molecule. Opened in 2010, the 919-foot long curved structure has five viewing
platforms, giving people wonderful views of the skyline from across the waterfront.

China’s first group of five female pilots flying J-11B fighter jets successfully completed their first solo (单独
的) training recently.
During the training, pilots had to complete simulated single engine and landing procedures accurately under
high altitude conditions, which greatly tested their situational awareness, technical and tactical (战 术 上 )
capabilities.
The first solo flight also involved challenging operations such as hovering at maximum angular speed (角速
度 ). It tests pilots’ ability to master the boundary performance of the aircraft and how to control the aircraft
accurately, providing a solid foundation for them to achieve tactical intention in the later air combat.
“We are honored to be part of the first group of female pilots flying J-11B fighter jets but it was also a test for
us. Though we’re weak in physical strength compared with men, flying these jets is not about arm wrestling. What
matters is decision-making and control of the jets.” said Yan Zhongyue, one of the pilots from Xi’an Flying College
of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force.
Women obviously enjoy advantages in operating weapons and equipment because of the careful and sensitive
characteristics, which also accords with future warfare in which accurate control of weapon platforms would be one
of focuses.
Following their first flight in the J-11B, they will receive training on formation flying, low-altitude and air
combat training before they will participate into front line combat units this year. Training female fighter pilots is
an important measure to strengthen the quality of the Air Force’s talent pool. The move is designed to shorten
training cycles for third generation fighters’ pilots. “We have proved that female pilots can do the same things as
men, we can operate heavy combat fighters. Today we can fly the J-11B, in the future same on the J-20. Our
journey is the sea of stars,” said Yan.
4. Which of the following best describes the first solo training
A. Demanding. B. Dangerous. C. Appealing. D. Popular.
5. In which aspect do female pilots have advantages over male pilots
A. They are physically stronger.
B. They are more cautious and attentive.
C. They can make better decisions.
第 5页/共 12页
D. They can control aircrafts more steadily.
6. What can we learn about the female pilots from the last paragraph
A. Their front line experience is rich.
B. Their training will soon come to an end.
C. They play a vital role in Air Force talents.
D. They have confidence to beat men in flying.
7. What can be the best title for the text
A. Female pilots’ hard training on flight.
B. Female pilots’ journey to the sea of stars.
C. The advantages female pilots have on flight.
D. The success of female pilots’ first flight in the J-11B.

I’m a zoologist and director of the Sloth (树懒) Conservation Foundation in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, Costa
Rica. I’m equipping the world’s slowest mammal with data-logging backpacks to better understand sloths’
behaviour. It’s surprisingly hard to catch a sloth. Although they’re slow — very, very slow — if you climb a tree
to catch one, it will move along to the next tree. Once you climb the new tree, it will move back again.
My team do this regularly, as we conduct the Sloth Backpack Project, a data-logging organization here in
Costa Rica, where many sloths co-exist with people. In 2017, I wanted to do more than research, so I started the
Sloth Conservation Foundation.
Now, I’m fitting a backpack to a brown-throated three-fingered sloth that we named Baguette, after a nearby
bakery. The backpack will collect data on her location, movement and living patterns. We had found Baguette
about 20 minutes earlier, balancing at the top of construction fencing as she attempted to escape two bulls. Baguette
wasn’t all that grateful. She’s an old girl. She’s old: she’s missing fingers, and she’s got scars on her face.
I admire and envy sloths. They’re a powerful symbol of the slowness that our society needs more of. They don’
t let anything stress them out unless it’s really important — they just get on with life.
This year, I received a 50,000 Future For Nature award, which we will use to train a dog to detect sloth feces
(粪便). We can use feces as a sign for sloth numbers and locations in the region, and eventually work out the
boundaries of the species, how fast the populations are declining and which conservation measures work. I’m
happy I’ve moved away from academia (学术界) — I can put all my energy into conservation. That’s what I feel
ecology should focus on — how we can use what we’re learning to give back to other species.
第 6页/共 12页
8. What’s the function of data-logging backpacks
A. To help sloths to climb.
B. To hold important books.
C. To study sloths’ behaviour.
D. To protect a sloth from its enemies.
9. Why was Baguette at the top of construction fencing
A. The author injured her face.
B. She was there just for a rest.
C. The author got too close to her.
D. She was trying to keep herself safe.
10. What’s the author’s attitude toward sloths’ slowness
A. Appreciative. B. Regretful. C. Annoyed. D. Amused.
11. The author will make use of sloths’ feces to .
A. train the dog for her study B. help with their conservation
C. study more animals in the future D. donate to an academic institution

Although we may not have the ability to paint the Mona Lisa or write novels like Hemingway, everyone is
born with a special ability — creativity. Some people can find and learn to show it early, while others might
discover it later in life. Creativity has different meanings for different people, but unluckily a lot of things may
stifle the development of it.And the importance of creativity is not valued as much as it should be. However, it has
a powerful effect on one’s overall ability to get much success in life.
No matter how busy one is, it is very important to leave some time to develop creativity. Trying out different
hobbies is a great way to discover one’s creativity because it can be very enjoyable. Some people find one hobby
and fall deeply in love with it. Some people prefer to try different hobbies for short time, or change them up each
season to stay interested and keep trying different things.
One great thing about a hobby is that there are no set rules. Each person gets to decide how often they want to
do it and whether they want to keep it for a long time or move on to something else after trying it for a few weeks
or months.
Another cool thing about hobbies is that one can enjoy them quietly when spending some free time alone, or
as a way to fit in a community. Book clubs, art or cooking classes, gardening clubs — nearly every type of hobby
第 7页/共 12页
offers a chance to meet with other people with the same interest and build relationships. Hobbies can be a great way
to create a community among co-workers.
Usually, the simple act of developing hobbies can provide a chance for a person to find and show his or her
creativity, which will produce great active changes. When people experience something as simple and great as
creating something beautiful through hobbies, they begin to look at the world — and daily environments — in a
fresh way.
12. What does the underlined word “stifle” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Stop. B. Mistake. C. Lose. D. Pretend.
13. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us
A. There are no set rules to develop creativity.
B. Trying different hobbies has many disadvantages.
C. We can develop creativity by trying different hobbies.
D. It’s enjoyable to try different hobbies at the same time.
14. What can we infer from the passage
A. Creativity can help people to look at the world actively.
B. Enjoying a hobby alone can help fit in a community well.
C. It’s better to have a long-time hobby than find something else.
D. Taking up simple hobbies can provide people with better lives.
15. What does the writer probably agree
A. People are all born with creativity.
B. People value creativity very much.
C. Creativity comes from great success.
D. Creativity means the most important thing.
