Imagine a warm, summer day at Juhu Beach in Mumbai.Ocean waves crash along the shore;the sun shines on the horizon. But what if the sun sets in Juhu and doesn't rise again for months and the sea freezes over Well, this is the kind of place where I've worked over the last decade. As a sea ice scientist,I live through the winter in the 24x7 polar(极地的)darkness and extremely low temperatures of six-month-long nights in the Arctic and the Antarctic.
Yet,my early experiences were far from pleasant.Besides being unable to clearly mark the passage of time, the lack of sunlight brings both a physical and a mental suffering. One's body clock turns off, leading to constant tiredness and little drive to focus on work.My mood is a very flat sine wave(正弦波).Missing family and friends makes it worse.
Unlike where I grew up—in warm, green Trivandrum,Kerala, filled with rich sights, sounds and people—life at the Poles is quiet. As the days shorten, almost all life starts to leave looking for warmer lands, but those who stay are greeted by breathtaking glacier ( 冰 川 )and an otherworldly view.In the coldest winter months, the sun seems to live only in memory. Its disappearance, however,is not real:Polar

It took me years to adapt and fall in love with these environments and now I am excited to throw myself into another journey in this land of darkness and slow-moving time. What pulls me back time and again is its unshakable peace and calmness. It quiets you, fills you with wonder and changes your soul. Have you ever noticed that people often perform better when others believe in them This phenomenon is called the"Pygmalion Effect"—a psychological rule where high expectations lead to improved performance.Named after a Greek myth(神话)about a sculptor(雕塑家)who brought his statue to life through belief, this effect shows how positive expectations can create real success. For example,in sports,a coach's trust might push athletes to break their limits.
The idea was tested in a famous 1968 study by psychologists Robert Rosenthal and Lenore Jacobson. They told teachers that certain students in a classroom were"late bloomers"with high potential ( 潜 能 ) , though these students were actually chosen by chance.By the end of the school year, those considered as "high-potential"showed much better grades and IQ scores.Teachers also reported these students asking more questions and showing greater curiosity. This proved that teachers'beliefs about students directly influenced their performance.
The Pygmalion Effect works through a cycle of encouragement and behavior. When someone(e.g.a teacher or manager)believes another person can succeed, they unconsciously give more support, advice and opportunities. For example,a teacher might call on a "high-potential"student more often or praise their efforts, which promotes the student's confidence and effort.Over time, this creates a self-fulfilling prophecy —the belief that something will happen makes it happen.
This effect has important applications in education, workplaces, and parenting.Studies show that when leaders express confidence in their teams, productivity and creativity increase.Even small acts of trust, like giving them challenging tasks, can inspire better results.Similarly, children whose parents
高一英语学科试题 第4页(共9页)
encourage their abilities often develop stronger skills. However, the opposite is also true:low expectations can limit growth.By understanding the Pygmalion Effect,we can create environments where everyone feels empowered to reach their potential.Plus, recognizing people's efforts can really encourage the good results, helping everyone keep growing and developing.
28.What is the author's purpose in asking a question at the beginning of the first paragraph
A.To introduce the topic. B.To open a discussion.
C.To present an opinion. D.To give some evidence.
29.What did Rosenthal and Jacobson's study prove
A.IQ tests can't be trusted.
B.All students have equal potential.
C.Teachers'expectations affected students'results.
D.Students chosen by chance became top performers.

A.A story coming from ancient myths.
B.A prediction that is based on science.
C.A false promise which was made by leaders.
D.A belief that comes true because people act on it.
31.Which of the following is the best title for the text

Babies experience a flood of information related to the senses from the moment they are born.
Knowing nothing about the world, they must learn to organize that information into groups of things—especially faces, one of the most important sights babies start to learn during the first month.
A recent study found babies'ability to recognize faces is helped by their mother's body smell, and that the influence of smell weakens as babies grow. This broadens scientists'understanding of how using multiple(多种的)senses together plays a role in early learning.
Dr.Amaud Leleu,a neuro-scientist and the leader of the research team, used EEG(脑电图)to record the brain activity of 50 babies with different ages while they watched a stream of six images per second. Among each sixth image was a human face, and the others were animals or things. The researchers expected that if the babies were focusing special attention on faces, there would be a once-per-second sharp rise on EEG to match the appearance of the face images—a so-called face-selective reaction. They also gave the babies T-shirts with their mothers'body smell to see their reaction changes
Overall,face-selective reactions grew stronger and more detailed with age.But the team also found the mothers'body smell enhance ( 增 强 ) babies'attention to faces in the youngest babies and that this enhancement slowly lessened in older babies."This could mean young babies depend more on their mother's smellbecause their ability to identify faces using sight alone is still developing,"Leleu says.
The findings show the importance of leaming through multiple senses early in life."To help babies learn,we should use all the senses,"Leleu says.“Our senses help us recognize the world, forming the basis

B.It appears to be a one-second sharp rise.

34.What can we infer about Leleu's experiment in the passage
A.Babies'learning begins with sense of smell.
B.Human learning abilities decrease with age.

D.Body smell enhances human understanding.
35.What might Dr.Leleu aim to explore next in his research

The classroom notice board seemed to laugh at Jack. His name was written poorly on the speech competition list.He stared at the names, feeling quite nervous.
“Surprise,Jack!”Tom shouted suddenly behind him.A group of classmates stood by the windows, holding back laughter.“You'llst-st-stutter(结巴)again,like in math class!"Tom said, copying Jack's way of speaking."The 'Human Subwoofer'is back!"
Jack's face burned. The nickname(绰号),Human Subwoofer, had stuck with him since seventh grade. He held the sign-up sheet tightly, not knowing what to do.For years,he'd avoided busy hallways and hidden during breaks to escapejokes.
At lunchtime,Jack wandered to the auditorium(礼堂) . Through the half-open door,he watched students practising speeches. They spoke loudly with expressive faces.Jack pulled out his sign-up sheet and took a closer look. The handwriting wasn't his parents'—it was Tom's!
A strong wave of anger swept over Jack.Tom had signed him up as a cruel joke. His first thought was to throw the paper away and forget about it.But as days passed, something inside him changed. He couldn't let Tom's laughter control how he saw himself anymore.
He began practising his speech alone. In his room,he stood in front of a mirror and gave himself confidence."H-hello,"he repeated, his voice shaky. He kept practising after school, hiding in empty classrooms.Slowly, his stuttering grew softer.
One afternoon,he heard Tom talking to friends by chance,"Watch him st-st-stutter on stage! It'll be funny!"Their laughter cut through the air like a knife.Determined,Jack said to himself in a low voice, "I'll show them."
