On a cold January morning, a man sat at a subway station in Washington D.C. and started to play the violin. He played for about 45 minutes.
Three minutes went by, and a middle-aged man stopped for a few seconds, and then hurried up to take care of his own things.
A minute later, the violinist received his first tip: a woman threw some money without stopping, and walked away.
Only a 3-year-old boy took the music seriously. He went over, sat down and soon lost himself in the wonderful performance. His mother wished to hurry along, but the kid kept looking at the violinist.
When he finished playing, no one noticed it. No one applauded. Everyone just walked by as if nothing much was happening.
No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the most talented musicians in the world. He had just played one of the most beautiful pieces ever written, on a violin worth 3.5 million dollars. Joshua Bell played the same music with the same violin and the seats each cost 100 dollars at a theatre two days before.
Joshua Bell’s playing in the subway station was a social experiment. It asks questions: in a common environment at a wrong hour, do we enjoy beauty Do we stop to make a response (反应) If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music, how many other things are we ignoring (忽视)

Governments around the world are pushing for an end to plastic straws (吸管) and bags. More and more businesses are changing to paper products. Using paper is considered to be better than plastic. However, it is harmful to the environment, too.
Firstly, paper bags and straws are made from trees. Trees, as you know, are good for the environment. They can slow down climate (气候) change. An increase in the use of paper bags need to cut down more trees.
Secondly, the production of paper things requires more energy and water. About 10 percent more energy and four times as much water is used to produce a paper bag than a plastic one. You might say that we can use recycled paper to save that energy and water. This seems to be a good idea. However, it takes even more energy and water to go through the recycling process than to make a new paper bag. Products made from recycled paper are also often short-lived.
Furthermore, paper products are heavier than plastic ones. That means they require more fuel (燃料) to transport. Seven trucks are needed to transport two million paper bags, while only one truck is needed to transport the same number of plastic bags. The increased weight also leads to a larger amount of waste once the bags are thrown away.
Paper products are actually a lose-lose for both the environment and businesses. They are more expensive than plastic products. A paper straw costs about 5 to 12 cents, while a plastic one usually costs only about 2 cents.
The most environment-friendly way is to avoid single-use things altogether. Products like glass water bottles and steel straws can be used over and over again. They are much better than either paper products or plastic products. By increasing the use of these items, you can greatly reduce your throwaway waste and truly make our earth a greener place!

When we’re stressed out, many of us turn to junk food for comfort. But a new study says this might not be a positive idea. The study found that eating a lot of fatty foods can change animals’ brains in ways that make their anxiety worse.
The person who is responsible for the study, Christopher Lowry, says that we knew junk food could make us put on weight, but we didn’t know it could also make us feel more nervous.
In an earlier study, they found the large mice that ate a lot of fat had more signs of brain inflammation (炎症) and acted more nervously. To better understand how a high-fat diet might be connected to anxiety, the researchers put some mice into two groups. Half got a standard diet of about 11% fat for nine weeks, and the others got a high - fat diet of 45% fat. They looked at the mice’s gut (肠) health and then gave the mice tests to see how they behaved.
When compared to the control group, the group eating a high-fat diet, not surprisingly, were heavier. They also had fewer types of beneficial bacteria (细菌) in their guts. And they had more of certain things in their brains, which have something to do with stress and anxiety.
______ Fats from food like fish can be good for our brains. But his research in animals suggests that too much fat, especially at a young age, might make the brain more likely to suffer from anxiety now and later in life.

Do you have a long list of hobbies that light you up but find it hard to balance (平衡) them all You’re not alone! The real challenge isn’t having too many hobbies, but how you manage them. In this passage, we’ll share how to enjoy all your hobbies without tiring yourself.
Focus on what you enjoy now.
It’s not easy to follow every hobby at the same time. The key is to focus on the hobbies that can bring you the most energy right now. For example, this month you’re excited about photography, but next month, you might want to try cooking. By switching hobbies based on what excites you, you’ll stay interested and avoid feeling tired.
Set a flexible schedule (灵活的时间表).
A flexible schedule helps you stay organized without pressure. You can create time blocks, such as one evening for drawing and another for guitar practice. If one hobby catches your attention more than the other, feel free to give it more time.
______
Why not get creative and combine your hobbies when possible For example, if you love being outdoors and photography, take your camera with you when you go out. By doing this, you can enjoy the best of both worlds while keeping things fresh and exciting.
Perfection (完美) is not necessary.
When you have many interests, it’s easy to feel pressure to be good at all of them. However, hobbies are supposed to be enjoyable, not stressful! Focus on the learning process and let go of the need to be perfect. It’s okay to be “just okay” at some things—what matters most is that they bring you joy.

From red apples and yellow lemons to blueberries and green melons, fruit comes in many different colors. Why do different kinds of fruits have so many colors
According to Lu Wei from the Chinese Academy of Science, fruit colors actually come from their different pigments (色素), such as red or yellow carotenoid (类胡萝卜素) and blue or purple anthocyanin (花青苷). These pigments appear in different amounts, depending on the fruit’s environment. This causes the fruit to turn a certain color.
To find out how the environment affects fruit colors, Chinese scientists studied many different fruit colors, including white, red, blue, purple and black. They found that red fruit tends to grow in cooler places. And instead of just growing in one place, you can find it grows in many places around the world. Blue or purple fruit mostly grows in warm places. The fruit tends to grow a lot in just one specific area. The scientists also found that the closer the fruit is to the equator, the darker its color will be.
Animals also have an influence on the evolution of fruit colors. Animals eat fruit and drop the seeds in other places later. This helps the fruit spread and grow in different places. Therefore, in order to attract animals, some fruit develops colors that are easy for animals to see.
However, animals see colors in a different way. Fruit needs to develop colors that are suited to animals’ visual ability. For example, birds can see red more easily than humans can. Therefore, there will be more red fruit in areas where birds live. The lemurs (狐猴) of Madagascar are red green color-blind. Most yellow fruit can be found in their habitats, as they can easily see this color.

On March 6, 2025, scientists in the USA made an exciting discovery. They created a special animal called the Colossal Woolly Mouse by mixing DNA from modern mice and woolly mammoths (猛犸象). This was done using gene-editing (基因编辑) technology. What is gene-editing then
Gene-editing helps scientists change parts of DNA.A tool called CRISPR-Cas9 acts like “scissors” to cut and edit DNA.It can cut DNA at specific parts, remove unwanted genes, or add new ones. It can remove bad genes, add new genes and help cure illness or improve crops. Scientists hope this technology can one day bring back extinct animals like woolly mammoths and dodos (渡渡鸟).
However, this success also reminds us of a sad truth: ________. We pollute air and water, destroy forests, and hunt too much. We take away animals’ homes. Many animals in the old days can’t be found in the earth now. While scientists spend years trying to save just one animal that has died out, humans can harm thousands in a short time.
What should we do We must protect the animals we still have instead of only depending on technology to fix problems. Every species is important for a healthy planet. Let’s act now before it’s too late!
1.How did scientists create a special animal called the Colossal Woolly Mouse
A.They mixed DNA from plants and animals.
B.They used human’s DNA to make it.

Do animals communicate with each other Some scientists did some research and, to their surprise, they learned that all animals communicate. They don’t use language, but they do send messages to each other. They learned that animals communicate with each other in three main ways: through sounds, smells, and body language.
The alarm call is one way that sounds are used for communication. When an enemy is near, animals send out a warning sound. Those who hear it run to safety, hide, or get together to fight the enemy. Dogs bark (吠叫) to show other animals how they’re feeling. Whales are well known for their ability to communicate from far away with special sounds. Humans don’t understand the meaning of these sounds, but in their own social groups, whales understand what they’re saying to each other.
Smell is another popular method of animal communication. Some animals such as the amoeba (变形虫) give out a chemical to tell other amoebas it’s going to have babies. Some animals send out a strong smell to warn other animals to stay away from them. For example, skunks (北美臭鼬) give off an odour when they feel they are in danger.
There are many examples of animals that use body language to communicate. Chimpanzees (黑猩猩) touch hands when they meet. When angry, they stick out their tongues (舌头). Think of a happy dog moving its tail from side to side. Even humans understand this form of dog body language.
Humans have developed their own system to communicate with each other, using words and sentences. But if you watch other animals carefully for a while, you quickly come to understand that they also have ways of getting their messages across.
1.How does the writer lead into the topic
A.By telling a joke. B.By using an old saying.

Have you ever experienced hui nan tian, or lasting humid (湿热的) weather
Hui nan tian is a special weather condition in southern China. It normally appears in spring when the temperature begins to rise and the humidity quickly increases. Before it arrives, there are usually a few cold days, with a temperature below 12°C. As the cold air goes away, warmer air quickly comes and the temperature rises, creating a lot of water vapour (蒸汽). Small water drops can be seen on windows and walls. For example, if the temperature is below 12°C from March 7th to 9th but suddenly rises on March 10th, hui nan tian will appear on March 10th.
During hui nan tian, the humid weather makes it easy for bacteria (菌) to grow. Food goes bad easily, clothes stay wet and sofas can get moldy (发霉的). Things like televisions may breakdown when they get wet inside, which can be dangerous for people to turn them on. It can also make people feel tired and sick. Catching a cold is prevalent during this time, as the temperature changes quickly. Although the weather troubles people a lot, for nature, it can be helpful. Thanks to the humid weather, plants can grow better with enough water and warmer air.
To cut down on the trouble caused by the lasting humid weather, scientists suggest that people in the south should close their windows in the morning and evening. At the same time, they should use an air conditioner to take away water from the air. It’s also useful to put newspapers on the floor, on tables and at the door to take in water and wet air.

You may feel that math is difficult and boring. Is it possible that you’ve been looking at math in a wrong way Li Xing, a math professor at Ning Xia University, thinks math can be beautiful and fun.
Numbers are beautiful
Many people today want to have beautiful looks. There is math hidden in beautiful human bodies. Measure (测量) the length from your head to your belly button (肚脐) and from your belly button to your feet. The ratio (比例) of these two numbers is always around 0.618. This is the golden ratio, which can be seen everywhere, like in nature, music and paintings.
In Chinese poems, we can also see the beauty of numbers. As Li Bai wrote, “My boat has left ten thousand mountains far away”, “A thousand miles in one day”, —all these numbers show how fast Li Bai travelled and how happy he felt.
Curves (曲线) are beautiful
“Sine curves” are beautiful. They go towards the two opposite directions without ending. When you look at them, you may feel like standing by the sea and watching waves slowly moving. “Tangent curve” is like a waterfall. It reminds us of a famous poem by Li Bai, where he describes the water falls straight down three thousand feet.
Formulas (公式) are beautiful
A right-angled triangle
There are some amazing formulas. Take the Pythagorean theorem (勾股定理) for instance: in a right-angled triangle, the square of the longest side equals the sum of the squares of the other two sides. Isn’t that fascinating As the Chinese-American mathematician Chern Shiingshen once said, “It is truly enjoyable!”

In early January 2025, a huge fire broke out in Los Angeles, California. The strong Santa Ana wind made the fire spread very quickly. The fire hurt not only people’s houses but also the environment around them.
A lot of forests and grasslands were burned. Many trees turned black, and the green grass was gone. All those plants were important for animals. Without them, animals lost their homes and food. Squirrels (松鼠) that lived in tree holes had to run away. Deer that ate the grass had nothing to eat. Some small animals like mice and rabbits died in the fire.
The soil also got into big trouble. Plants usually help keep the soil in place. But after the fire, there were no plants. When it rained, the rain washed the soil away. In some hilly places, mudslides (泥石流) occurred. It broke roads and even destroyed some houses.
The air became dirty, too. The fire sent a lot of smoke and bad things into the air. People in the areas near the fire had to wear masks. If someone had trouble breathing, they were in even more danger.
