Most of the energy we use for heating, lighting, transportation and manufacturing (制造业) comes from fossil (化石) fuels. These are carbon-based fuels from oil, coal and natural gas.
There are three main disadvantages to using these fuels. Firstly, they are causing climate problems because of the greenhouse effect. When we burn fossil fuels they produce carbon dioxide which causes global warming. Secondly, when we have used up all our coal, oil and natural gas, we will have nothing left to burn. Thirdly, they are not very efficient. The internal combustion engine (内燃机) that we use in most cars, trucks and buses, for example, is only about14% efficient.
Scientists are working on another fuel-hydrogen (氢). There are a couple of advantages to using hydrogen as a fuel. Firstly, because two-thirds of the Earth’s surface is water and water is made of hydrogen and oxygen. There is an almost unlimited supply of hydrogen. Secondly, burning hydrogen does not cause global warming. Thirdly, it is much more efficient than carbon-based fuels.
Unfortunately, there are problems with hydrogen at the present time. We don’t know how to separate it from water cheaply, and there is difficulty of storing it. It can be stored under pressure but high pressure tanks are far from safe. It can also be stored as a liquid but only at extremely low temperatures. It seems likely, therefore, that there will have to be a completely new technology before hydrogen replaces fossil fuels. Solving these problems is an urgent matter. Although China, India and Australia have huge amounts of cheap coal, and there are still large oil and gas reserves (储藏量) elsewhere, the effects on the planet’s climate will be worse if they are still used.

Qomolangma is the third mountain of the Himalayas, so people call it the Third God Mountain in Tibetan language.
Qomolangma is very famous and it is higher than any other mountain in the world. Its newest height is 8848.86 meters. At the height of 8,000 meters, there is only 30% oxygen (氧气) , so it is dangerous for humans to climb higher. But many climbers want to challenge themselves. As Alan Amette, a mountain climber from America, said “Climbing mountains drives you to look deep inside yourself, and lets you find out whether you are strong enough in mind when you want to stop.”
It’s a good thing that Qomolangma gives people a chance (机会) to become strong-willed (意志坚强的) when they are trying to achieve their dreams. However, such as water bottles and plastic (塑料的) bags. They cause the environmental pollution for Qomolangma. Many animals would die after eating the plastic bags, many volunteers from all over the world came to Qomolangma to join in the clean-up activity. A volunteer advised, “Mountain climbing lovers should always take good care of themselves, take good care of Qomolangma.”
7.What is the newest height of Qomolangma ________

Do you hear of hermit crabs (寄居蟹) They are a type of ocean animal. They used to stay in the sand or water and like eating different kinds of foods. But as people throw more and more rubbish into the ocean, the rubbish has become the “home” of hermit crabs. 12
Unlike other crabs, hermit crabs are born with soft bodies, so they need to look for shells (壳) for protection. 13 Then they use legs to check shells to make sure they fit. Do you think they only use a shell No. 14 In their lifetime, they may use lots of shells.
Plastic (塑料) rubbish is lighter than common shells. 15 It may also help hermit crabs to attract (吸引) lovers. Because man-made “shells” might be interesting in lovers’ eyes.
16 Different from natural shell, plastic waste is often more colorful. It might stand out (显眼) on the ground. This makes hermit crabs easier to be seen by their enemies (敌人). Hermit crabs could also die when they go into plastic bottles.
A.So hermit crabs can move easily.
B.Once they find a shell, they will live in it.
C.However, the rubbish shells can bring danger.
D.Why do hermit crabs choose to live in rubbish
E.First they look at the shell’s type, size and color.
F.Believe it or not, it is happening around the world.
G.As they grow, they give up old shells and find bigger ones.
The world is becoming much smaller by using modern traffic and modern communication tool. Life today is much easier than it was hundreds of years ago, but it has brought new problems. One of the biggest problems is pollution. To pollute means to make things dirty. Pollution comes in many ways. We see it, smell it, drink it and even hear it.
Man is now slowly polluting the whole world. Air pollution is still the most serious. It’s bad for all living things in the world, but it is not the only one kind of pollution. Water pollution kills fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us angry more easily.
Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. They stop people from burning coal in houses and factories in the city, and from putting dirty smoke into the air. Pollution by sulfur dioxide (SO ) is now the most dangerous kind of air pollution. It is caused by heavy traffic. We are sure that if there are fewer people driving, there will be less air pollution.
The earth is our home. We must take care of it. That means keeping the land, water and air clean. And we must pay attention to the rise in pollution at the same time.

Earth is often called the Blue Planet. That’s because about three-fourths of the earth is covered by water. People think we are not short of water. In fact, they are wrong. Most of the water is salt water. We can find it in the world’s oceans. Only about 3% is fresh water that we can drink.
Although you might think that most of the fresh water on the earth is found in the lakes and rivers, in fact, less than 1% of the fresh water can be found in these places. Around 70% of the earth’s fresh water is ice in the polar (极地的) places. They are far from us. And the water there is tough to transport (运输).
The second greatest source (资源) of fresh water on the earth is under the ground. This kind of water is called groundwater. Places that don’t have fresh water from rivers and lakes depend on groundwater for drinking and other uses. Groundwater also can’t get away from pollution. Chemicals (化学制品) that are used in farming and factories can get into the ground.
The earth has little usable water. Luckily, each of us can do something to save water. Kids and adults are trying their best to save water in their own communities (社区). If we work together, we will have a better world.

Making friends is a skill. Like most skills, it improves with practice. If you want to meet people and make friends, you must be willing to take some actions. You must first go where there are people. You won’t make friends by staying at home alone.
Join a club or a group, talking with those who like the same things as you do is much easier, or join some activities.
Many people are nervous when talking to new people. After all meeting strangers means facing the unknown. And it’s human nature to feel a bit uncomfortable about the unknown.
Most of our fears about dealing with new people come from doubts (怀疑)about ourselves. We imagine other people are judging us, finding us too tall or too short, too this or too that. But don’t forget that they must be feeling the same way. Try to accept yourself as you are and try to put the other people at ease. You’ll both feel more comfortable.
Try to act self-confidence (自信)even if you don’t feel that way when you enter a room full of strangers, such as a new classroom. Walk tall and straight, look directly at other people and smile.
If you see someone you’d like to speak to, say something. Don’t wait for the other person to start a conversation.
Just meeting someone new doesn’t mean that you’ll make friends with that person — friendships are based on mutual(相互的)liking and “give and take”. They take time and effort to develop. And there are things that keep a new friendship from growing.
26.You can not make friends ________.

31.When meeting someone new, ________.
A.Try to make him feel easy B.Judge him too this or too that
C.Not to talk with him D.let him talk to you first
Maybe nothing tastes as delicious and refreshing (凉爽的) as a cold, juicy, round watermelon on a hot summer day. No wonder this healthy fruit has been enjoyed by humans for thousands of years. But how about trying square watermelons instead of round ones Sounds fascinating, doesn’t it
If you have been paying attention to all the exciting news lately, then surely you have seen all the wonderful shapes that watermelons come in these days. There are watermelons that look like Egyptian pyramids, there are special heart shaped watermelons for Valentine’s Day and of course, there are all kinds of round shapes. But did you know that it all started with square watermelons
Recently, farmers in the southern Japanese town have discovered a technique to grow their watermelons in a square shape. The reason why they’re doing this in Japan is that there is not enough space in refrigerators. They are trying to make watermelons “refrigerator-friendly”.
A round watermelon can take up a lot of room in a refrigerator, and the usual round fruit often sits awkwardly (笨拙地) on refrigerator shelves. Smart Japanese farmers have forced their watermelons to grow into a square shape by putting the watermelon into square, glass cases while the fruit is still growing on the vine (藤). The new kind of square watermelons are so easy to store. You can just stack them up, which means more of them will fit in a container. This save a lot of space and also money on shipping. Also, people can now fit them better in their tiny refrigerators at home and can start buying bigger watermelons.
But these square watermelons come with a high price. Regular watermelons in Japan cost from $15 to $25 each, while each square watermelon costs about $82. Being quite expensive, these watermelons will certainly not be bought by the general public. Maybe people will give them as gifts! But it is also said that there does appear to be a growing U.S. market for watermelons that are more refrigerator-friendly. The industry is seeking for opinions from consumers who do mind size.

Researchers said they had found out that there was once an ancient fresh water lake on Mars that might have been able to support life.
A team of researchers from the US Curiosity Rover Mission, analyzed (分析) some mudstone and fine-grained sediment (细粒沉积物) which can tell us that there was at least one lake around 3.6 billion years ago.
The team said their analysis showed that the lake was calm and likely had fresh water, including key biological elements, such as carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and sulphur (硫磺). Theoretically, such a lake would provide perfect conditions for simple living things.
The findings were published in the US Journal Science and presented at the American Geophysical Union’s fall meeting in San Francisco. “It is important to note that we have not found signs of ancient life on Mars. What we have found is that there once existed a lake on its surface which might make it possible for some simple living things to live billions of years ago,” Professor Sanjeev Gupta said in a statement. Gupta described the new research as “a huge positive step” for the exploration of Mars.
In previous studies, scientists found evidence of water on Mars’ surface in other rocks. However, the new research provides the strongest evidence yet that Mars could have been habitable enough for life to continue.

I am Benjamin Lou, Chinese name Lou Yingen, who is a 20-year-old Chinese-American mathematician living with Spinal Muscular Atrophy(SMA) (脊髓性肌萎缩症), and now I am studying at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States.
Although I’ve never taken a physical step on this planet, I can fly in the space of math and physics freely.
Diagnosed with SMA, I have had no ability to walk, eat, or use the restroom without help since I was a baby. But these things can’t prevent me from getting unlimited freedom in the areas of math and physics.
When I was a 4th grader, I became interested in math and learned about calculus (微积分). By the 5th grade, I scored in the top one percent on the AMC 10, a competition aimed at high school sophomores (高中二年级学生). In the 8th and the 9th grades, I qualified (取得资格) for the USA Mathematics Olympiad, being among the top 250 young mathematicians in the nation. A similar qualification for the USA Physics Olympiad soon followed. My love for the mathematical sciences led me to MIT in the end, where I major in physics and math.
It is clear to me that math isn’t only about numbers. It’s actually the language of the universe, a beautiful way to describe the logical patterns (逻辑模式) that exist in everything around us. And it is this same language that has allowed me to transcend the physical limitations (限制) of my body. As time goes by, even as my muscles weakened, my interest in understanding the world has only deepened. If I can understand the language of the universe, why should I worry about my physical disability

Henry Hudson was probably born in or near the city of London sometime between 1560 and 1570. At the time many countries and companies were looking for a new way to India. Spices (香料) from India were popular in Europe, but were very expensive to transport. Ships had to travel all the way around Africa, with all kinds of dangers on the way. Many ships turned over in the sea or were stopped by local African people. If someone could find a better way, they would be rich.
Henry Hudson wanted to find a northern way to India. Starting in 1607, Henry headed up four different teams looking for the northern way to India. Henry set sail on his first journey in May of 1607. His boat was called the Hopewell and his sailors included his 16-year-old son John. He sailed north and reached an island called Spitsbergen. At Spitsbergen he found a place full of whales. They kept going north until they ran into ice. Hudson searched for over two months to find a way through the ice, but in the end had to turn back. In 1608 Hudson once again took the Hopewell out to sea. However, once again he was stopped by ice.
Hudson’s first two journeys had been supported by the Muscovy Company. However, they now lost hope of finding a northern way to India. Hudson went to Dutch and soon had another ship called the Half Moon supported by the Dutch East India Company. They told Hudson to try to find a way around Russia. But Hudson ended up taking a different way and arrived in North America. On his fourth journey, his sailors didn’t have enough to eat and Hudson didn’t treat them well. Finally, the sailors put him into a small boat and left him at sea. No one is sure what happened to Henry Hudson, but he was never heard from again.
