To be a good teacher, you need some of the abilities of a good actor. You must be able to hold the attention and interest of your audience (听众). You must be a clear speaker with a good, strong, pleasing voice which is fully under your control. And you must be able to act what you are teaching in order to make the meaning clearer.
Watch a good teacher, and you will see that he does not just sit before his class. He stands the whole time while he is teaching; he walks about, using his arms and hands to help him with his explanations, and his face to express feelings. Listen to him, and you will hear the loudness and the note (音调) of his voice always changing according to what he is talking about.
The fact that a good teacher has some of the abilities of a good actor doesn’t mean that he will really be able to act well on stage, for there are very important differences between the teacher’s work and the actor’s. The actor has to speak words that he has learnt by heart. He has to repeat exactly the same words each time he plays a certain part, and even his movements and the ways in which he uses his voice are usually fixed. What he has to do is to make all these carefully learnt words and actions seem natural on stage. A good teacher works in quite a different way. His audience takes an active part in his play. They ask and answer questions, they obey orders, and if they don’t understand anything, they will say so. The teacher therefore has to act according to the needs of his audience, which is his class. He cannot learn his part by heart, but must invent it as he goes along.
I have known many teachers who were fine actors in class but were unable to take part in a stage play because they could not keep strictly to what another had written.

When I was 5 years old, I went to the USA with my mom. I can still remember the first Halloween holiday I had in the USA.
On the morning of Halloween, we paid a visit to a pumpkin (南瓜) farm. Each of us brought a pumpkin to school with us. I used the pumpkin to make a lantern which had two triangle eyes and a scary mouth.
In the afternoon, we put on the Halloween costumes and went on parade in school. Some of the costumes were nice, but some of them looked scary. I chose to wear a suit of Superman’s clothes.
I did a lot of things that day, but the part I liked best was “trick or treat” in the evening. After dinner, I went outside with an empty bag. I hoped to get a lot of candies from people. At first, I was a bit nervous, so when I knocked at the door, my heart was beating very fast. A lady came out, and I said carefully to her, “Trick or treat.” My voice was very low, and even myself could hardly hear it. To my surprise, the lady was so kind to give me two candy bars, and I was so excited, thanked the lady and moved on. I couldn’t remember how many houses I visited, but I could remember how many candies I got—I got 91 candies that day, and I was so proud of myself.
What a happy Halloween I had! And I wish we could have a Halloween every month!

School’s out for summer. But for some, there is still homework to be done. Many teachers ask students to read books during summer holiday. They provide some books for children to read and ask them to report back when returning to school. People who support it say it helps kids with their study because they continue to learn and practise their reading skills. But others say otherwise. They believe forcing (强迫) kids to read during their time off from school may lead to a bad result.
Yes kids need to keep reading No reading shouldn’t be forced
It’s important for children to read over the summer. Scientists have found that during the long break, student lose some of the skills they learned during the school year and can fall behind. Teachers often spend the first weeks of school getting students to catch up again. It has been shown that having kids read over the summer makes the transition (过渡) easier. Besides, summer is the perfect time to get into the world of books. And when they return in autumn, they’ll know more about the world. What children read, and when they read, should be up to them. A love of reading is more likely to develop when it’s not forced. Required (强制的) summer reading may make kids tired. One problem a lot of people have with books is that people buy books and then never read them. To work out this problem, a publisher (出版社) got a clever idea. It printed a book in disappearing ink (墨水): the text of the book disappears (消失) two months after the special package (盒) of the book is opened. It encourages buyers to read it before it goes away. People call this “the book that can’t wait”.
The book was a great success. The publisher sold out all the first edition (版本) at a bookstore in one day, and received “thousands of request (请求)” for more copies of the book. It also got a lot of media coverage (媒体报道). As a result, the publisher is planning to publish other works in disappearing ink now.
In my opinion, the idea is pretty clever. But here, I have some advice:
First, the disappeared book should start disappearing after the reader opens the book for the first time. If the books become very popular in the future, readers will need to read them one at a time. They don’t want their books to disappear before they read the first page.
Second, the disappeared book should find a good use. Maybe we can use them as notebooks. It would be a more environmentally friendly way to do this.
