The Terracotta Army is a collection of terracotta sculptures showing the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China. It is a form of funerary art buried with the emperor in 210-209 BC with the purpose of protecting him in his afterlife. The Terracotta Army was discovered in Lintong County, Shaanxi, on 29 March 1974.
History
The construction of the tomb began in 246 BC, soon after Ying Zheng (then aged 13) succeeded his father as King of Qin, and the project eventually involved 700,000 workers. Sima Qian wrote that Qin Shi Huang was buried with palaces, towers, valuable artifacts and wondrous objects.
Terracotta figures
The terracotta figures are life-sized, typically ranging from 175 cm to about 200 cm (the officers are typically taller). They vary in height, uniform and hairstyle in accordance with rank. The figures are of these general types:
The quantity of infantry warriors(步兵俑)is the most in the three pits of Terracotta Army, around 7,000 pieces unearthed. According to their diverse headwear, dressing styles and shoes, people can recognize their status easily.
Each cavalry warrior(骑兵俑)stands in front of its horse. Both of the warriors and horses are life-sized. These vivid cavalry figures and horses are the real reflection of the cavalry image of the Qin Dynasty.
The kneeling archers wear long robes covered with armor and squared shoes. Several kneeling archers found in pit 2 are the best-preserved and attract lots of tourists for their incredible colorful appearance with black hair, pink faces, vermilion headbands, powdery green coat armors, sky-blue and pink leg guards.

Eppie's cheeks were flushed with distress. "Thank you, sir and madam. But I can't leave my father." Eppie went back to Silas's chair, and put an arm round his neck, brushing the tears from her eyes.
Godfrey was extremely annoyed. He wanted to do what he thought was his duty. And adopting Eppie would make him feel much less guilty about his past. "But, Eppie, you must agree," he cried. "You are my daughter! Silas Marner, you know, Eppie's mother was my wife and she is my own child."
Eppie's face went white. Silas, who had been relieved by hearing Eppie's answer to Godfrey, now answered bitterly, "Then, sir, why didn't you confess this sixteen years ago, before I began to love her Why do you come to take her away now, when it's like taking the heart out of my body God gave her to me because you abandoned her! And He considers her mine!"
"I think, Marner," he said firmly, "that you should consider what's best for Eppie. You shouldn't stand in her way when she could have a better life."
Silas was silent for a moment. He was worried that perhaps Godfrey was right, and that it was selfish of him to keep Eppie. At last he brought out the difficult words. "All right. Speak to the child. I won't prevent her from going."
Godfrey and his wife were relieved to hear this, and thought Eppie would now agree. "Eppie, my dear," said Godfrey, “although I haven't been a good father to you so far, I want to do my best for you now.”
But Eppie did not come forward this time. She stood by Silas's side, holding his hand in hers, and spoke almost coldly. "Thank you for your kind offer. But I wouldn't be happy if I left father. He'd have nobody if I weren't here. Nobody shall ever come between him and me!”
“But you must make sure, Eppie," said Silas worriedly, “that you won't be sorry, if you decide to stay with poor people. You could have a much better life."
“I'll never be sorry," said Eppie firmly. "I don't want to be rich, if I can't live with the people I know and love."
24. Why did Godfrey want to claim Eppie back
A. To please his present wife. B. To repair his public reputation.
C. To ease his sense of guilt. D. To make things easier for Silas.
25. How did Silas feel according to paragraph 3
A. Annoyed. B. Relieved. C. Surprised. D. Confused.
26. What made Silas finally let Eppie make her own decision
A. Pressure from Godfrey. B. His deep love for her.
C. Fear of legal consequences. D. His desire for moral superiority.
27. What values does Eppie's decision mirror
A. Putting personal freedom first. B. Living up to family expectations.
C. Focusing on material comforts. D. Valuing emotional bonds over wealth.

Lots of factors contribute to how healthy a person is. Some of these are obvious, like the medical care they receive. But some less obvious factors can be even more important! Some examples include access to food, housing, healthcare, social support and education
What good does education do to you Research shows that education can lengthen your life expectancy! Getting more education leads to better employment, higher income, and access to healthcare. And all of these improve overall health. So, people with more education tend to have higher life expectancies than people with less education.
Many studies show more education is associated with longer lives. But no one has calculated exactly how much longer or how much mortality risk goes down with each year of schooling. In other words, how does education lower a person's risk of death Of course, everyone still dies, but a lower mortality risk means a higher chance of a long life.
We reviewed previous studies that looked at education and mortality, searching seven databases of scientific studies from around the world. We gathered all the studies on this topic published between 1980 and 2023. In total, we identified 603 studies from 59countries. We analyzed the results from all these studies to measure how education affected mortality risk. Besides, we also looked at differences in the effect of education at different ages. Finally, we checked the effect of education across Socio-Demographic Index levels.
We found that getting more education lowers mortality risk. With each year of education, an adult's risk of death goes down by about 2%. This effect is greater in younger adults than in older ones. But even people over 70 years old benefit from the positive effects of education! When we looked at countries at different stages of social and economic development, we didn't find different results. This suggests that more years of schooling leads to longer lives in both rich and poor countries.
28.According to the author, education can be
A. a pathway to health B. a measure of success
C. a source of stress D. a chance for the rich
29. What does the underlined word "mortality" in paragraph 3 mean
A. Health. B. Death. C. Virtue. D. Survival.
30. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The methods. B. The arguments. C. The findings. D. The suggestions.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. People in poor countries benefit more from education.
B. The impact of education on young people is relatively greater.
C. Education does affect how long people live in different countries.
D. People in rich countries have chances to gain further education easily.
D
Lots of people are concerned about the ability that artificial intelligence (AI) has to copy their voices. When AI is used to make false recordings of things that a person never said, it is called a “deepfake."
However, more and more stories are coming out about how AI is helping people who can no longer speak, regain a version of their voice. For example, country music singer Randy Travis recently released his first new song in over 10 years with the help of Al technology. Travis suffered a stroke and can no longer sing.
The technology is also able to help people like 21-year-old Alexis Bogan from the eastern state of Rhode Island. Bogan used to love singing along with songs by her favorite musicians like Taylor Swift and Zach Bryan. She was a popular singer in her school music group as a teenager.
But a surprise diagnosis changed all that. Last August, doctors removed a tumor from the back of her brain. The surgery was a success. But after doctors removed a tube used to help her breathe during the operation, Bogan had trouble speaking.
Last month, Bogan got her voice back in a way. Experts created a tool for her using AI. She uses a text-to-voice app to order her favorite coffee at Starbucks. She uses it by writing words in her phone and holding it up at the coffee shop so servers can hear her. The app uses OpenAI's voice tool.
Bogan's doctors say her case shows why AI can be helpful. Dr. Rohaid Ali is training in neuroscience at Brown University's medical school. He called Bogan "a trailblazer." He said the technology can help millions of people with brain injuries, throat cancer or other diseases that prevent a person from speaking.
Fatima Mirza is another doctor working on the project. She said there is a risk that AI technology can be used by bad people, "but we can't forget about the patient and the social good." She said the technology permits Bogan to have something close to her true voice.
32. Why is the story of Alexis Bogan mentioned
A. To show her positive personality.
B. To suggest her interest in politics.
C. To advertise the function of AI technology.
D. To prove the necessity and importance of AI.
33. How is the passage mainly developed
A. By offering data. B. By listing examples.
C. By making comparisons. D. By giving explanations.
34. What is Fatima Mirza's attitude towards AI technology
A. Unclear. B. Dismissive. C. Doubtful. D. Approving.
35. What can be a suitable title for the passage
A. Bogan: A successful example of using AI.
B. Bogan: A lucky girl with an amazing experience.
C. AI: A tool capable of helping people to “speak".
D. AI: A tool with advantages outweighing disadvantages.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
If you find it hard to say no or struggle to voice your own needs, you might be a people pleaser.
36 But therapists warn that people pleasers could be harming their emotional and mental health and it could be so unconscious and automatic, you might not even realise you're one of them.
37
Aside from the common sign of constantly saying yes to other people's ideas, plans and wishes, many people pleasers will never really vocalise their own needs or ideas whether that's at work, at home, with friends or in relationships.
Watch out for whether you say "sorry" more than "no”too. 38 They may even excuse other people's behaviour when there's no need.
What's the long-term damage
Pleasing others before yourself will continue to embed(嵌入)the internal belief that you‘re not worthy or lovable. Meanwhile you are giving people permission to tread on(凌驾)you, but inside you are hurt and feel rejected, resentful and unheard.
How to stop people pleasing
Remember that it is not your fault. If your people pleasing behaviour came from a painful place, be proud and grateful to yourself that you found a way to survive and give yourself permission to let that go.
Stop asking permission for things you do not have to ask permission for. 39 At the same time, if you do need help, ask for it.
Put in boundaries. Start to say no to things that feel uncomfortable, or cause you stress or inconvenience. 40
Practise being more decisive. It can feel scary at first. This doesn't mean being aggressive and forceful.
A. How many types of people pleasers are there
B. What are the signs that you're a people pleaser
C. Don't give in just because other people didn't like it.
D. On the face of it, people pleasing might not sound like a negative trait.
E. Realise you do not need other people's opinion or approval all the time.
F. It might be time to put yourself first instead of always prioritizing everyone else.
G. "Sorry" is an easy word for people to use while "no" is rarely used in their vocabulary.

When Mary entered the south pole penguin(企鹅)Research Lab,she saw her twin brother Tom gently petting a penguin in his arms. As kids of the lab scientists, Mary and Tom often observed the emperor penguins that were studied to understand how they adapted to extreme temperatures, which might aid human survival.
"We're thirteen years old, Tom. It's time to grow up and stop playing with the lab penguins, "said Mary as she started cleaning. "They're research animals, not pets.”“But the birds listen to me!" insisted Tom, his breath forming a cloud in the freezing air.
Suddenly, an alarm rang out and red lights flashed, signaling a problem. The kids rushed over to look into it. She checked the habitat monitor and found that the temperature had gone down a lot. "The heater must be broken!”
Mary quickly sent a message to their parents’research team, who were all conducting outdoor studies. “It's freezing and let's get out of here!" Mary warned. They ran to the lab's heavy metal door, only to find the door sealed shut by thick ice. With the adults away and no way to escape, the kids would have to deal with the freezing conditions until help arrived.
Time dragged as Mary and Tom anxiously waited. The increasing cold caused them to shake. "I wonder what emperor penguins do in extreme cold, since they stay in the pole all winter instead of going somewhere warmer," asked Mary.“They huddle(挤作一团),”Tom answered. "They huddle together tightly so that the birds in the middle will be warm enough." "What about the ones on the edge " Mary asked. "They push their way towards the center, and then move back out to the edge, and struggle back again. Scientists in the early 21st century recorded it." He replied as he stared at the large crowd of the penguins in the lab.

第一节 (满分 15 分)
Possible version :
Dear Chris,
I hope the email finds you well. I’m writing to share an exciting activity our class held last Friday——Plogging!
We gathered at the entrance to the park at 8:00 in the morning, equipped with gloves and trash bags. Organized by our teachers, we were divided into groups to compete to collect as much waste as possible. While jogging, we picked up litter along the paths. By the end, we’d filled multiple bags and left the park sparkling clean.
It was really a “clean” exercise and incredibly rewarding! Not only did we exercise, but we also contributed to the environment. I’ve realized how small efforts can make a big difference. Have you tried anything similar Looking forward to hearing from you!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节(满分 25 分)
Possible version :
In a flash, Tom had an idea to keep warm. He shouted with joy, “Let’s copy the penguins and join them!” Mary hesitated with concern that the birds wouldn’t accept them. Tom smiled with confidence while approaching the birds which had already crowded together due to the temperature. Slowly and gently, he reached out his hands and stroke them with great affection. Though alarmed at first, the penguins recognized him and allowed him into their huddle. Mary quickly followed his lead. The two kids squeezed their way from the edge of the crowd to the center and returned to the edge with the flow just as the birds did. As warmth spread through their bodies, they grew confident they could survive until rescue came.
About two hours later, their parents rushed into the lab, screaming out the kids’ names. Before Tom and Mary could make any response, their parents were amazed to find the kids tightly surrounded by a huge group of penguins, safe and sound. Their mother check for any signs of frostbite or injury and their father asked in surprise, “You were using the penguins’ way to keep warm ” The two kids exchanged a glance and Tom proudly told their parents that they learned from the penguins. As the room warmed up, the penguins slowly walked away. The parents looked at each other proudly——their children didn’t just wait for help, but found a smart way to survive by working with nature.

Text 10
There have been many great inventions that have changed the way we live. (18) One of the first great inventions was one that is still very important today — the wheel. This invention made it easy for people to carry heavy things and to travel long distances. In the 19th century, there were many great inventions, such as the camera, the electric light, and the radio. (19) These inventions have all become a big part of our lives today. The first part of the 20th century saw more great inventions, such as the helicopter in 1901, movies with sound in 1927, the jet plane in the 1930s, and the computer in 1946. This was also a time when a new material, nylon, was first made. It came out in 1935 and had a great effect on the kinds of clothes people wore. (20) Later, people began looking for ways to go into space. Russia took the first step. Then, the United States took another. In 1969, human beings took their biggest step away from earth. Americans were the first to walk on the moon. Since then, people from other countries including Chinese and Japanese, have gone into space.
