Silk The invention of silk happened thousands of years ago. Silk was widely used in a variety of sectors(行业) including clothing, writing and fishing. Later, during the Han Dynasty, silk became more than just a product. It was used as a reward for a worthy Chinese citizen or government official.
Seed drill (播种机) Chinese farmers generally planted seeds by hand, which was time-consuming and inefficient. Most of the seeds never developed because of pests (害虫 ) and bad weather. As the deep drilling technology slowly improved, the Chinese were able to drill holes over 3,000 feet deep by the l1th century. The same technology was used to drill the first petroleum well (油井) in California in the1860s.
Compass The Chinese considered south their cardinal direction, and the original compass was created by the Chinese using a lodestone (天然磁石 ). A strong earthquake hit central Myanmar on Friday, March 29. The 7.9-magnitude quake caused widespread damage, destroying buildings, bridges, and roads. Many people were killed, and the number of victims reached over 1,000. The disaster also affected parts of China's Yunnan province and Thailand. In Bangkok, Thailand, a tall building under construction collapsed, trapping about 100 workers.
China quickly responded to the crisis. On Saturday, the Chinese embassy announced that China would send 100 million yuan (about $13.77 million) in aid. A lot of excellent straw-made miniatures (微缩模型) of classic ancient buildings make Xu Jian's home more beautiful. They range from the Yellow Crane Tower in Hubei Province to the Forbidden City's turrets( 角楼) in Beijing. They are all full of details and delicately crafted, tied and arranged by Xu's skillful hands.
“All the doors and windows and everything else are made of sorghum stalks (高粱秆)," Xu points to the Yellow Crane Tower that is 1 meter high at his base in Yongqing County, Langfang City, Hebei Province.
This special piece was made out of hundreds of thousands of sorghum stalks and took him two years to complete without the use of any nails (钉子) or glue. It completely depends on interlocking, tenon-and-mortise structures (榫卯结构)," the man in his 30s explains.
The sorghum straw art requires lots of patience, especially for works showing images of ancient buildings. They usually take several months or even one to two years to complete. Additionally, all the beams and columns are straightened after being heated over a lamp. It's the only way that every door and window can open and close properly.
The sorghum straw art follows strict standards from material selection to production. Xu has grown sorghum in his farmland, and chooses those of the highest quality to create straw works.
The sorghum stalks range from the finest at 1.8 millimeters to the thickest at 12 millimeters. Almost every piece includes hundreds of crafting steps. Xu doesn't waste the leftover stalks, either, as he turns them into windmills (风车).
In the eyes of many, sorghum straw is only agricultural waste, but through the creativity of craftsmen, it can be turned into a treasure, being changed into beautiful works of art," Xu says.
1 What is Xu Jian good at doing
2 How long did Xu Jian spend making the 1-meter-high Yellow Crane Tower
3 How does Xu Jian make beams and columns straight
4 What does Xu Jian do with the leftover stalks
5 What do you think of sorghum stalks Why do you think so
