Fourteen-year-old Etueni Nasau and his two 15-year-old cousins took off to a neighbouring island in a small boat. However, their short trip turned out to be an 800-mile, 50-day difficult experience.
Soon after they left, the small boat ran out of its gas and moved away from not only the neighbouring island, but also all land. As night fell, the three kids ate a few fresh bananas they took along and hoped that things would get better in the morning.
But the boat kept going day and night. During the day, they felt the sun was too hot, while at night it was very windy and rainy. While terrifying, it was a present from nature since it at least provided them with fresh water.
Food, however, was hard to get. With the bananas gone, the three boys tried their best to get whatever they could find. Every now and then, small flying fish would provide a meal. Their biggest meal during the whole time was a bird they caught, as it sat on the side of the boat.
A few days before they were saved, things got even worse. The rains stopped, and the three had to drink some seawater. Luckily, a deep-sea boat, on its way to New Zealand, saw the little boat. The seamen on the boat drew closer and saw the three tired boys moving hands from one side to the other.
