While designing, they faced many problems. For example, designing a nuclear reactor (反应堆) was very hard. Without help from other countries, they had to do their own research. Using basic tools like calculators and rulers, they worked hard to calculate and test.
Finally, in the 1970s, China’s first nuclear submarine was built and tested successfully. China became one of the countries that could make nuclear submarines. Huang Xuhua didn’t stop there and he kept helping to improve submarine technology. His hard work brought him many awards, including the “Medal of the Republic” in 2019.

Xu Xiake was an explorer (探险家) of the late Ming Dynasty who travelled huge mountains and deep valleys (峡谷) in China. He was one of the greatest explorers in Chinese history.
Xu’s travels were totally up to him and done on his own. He travelled so that his feet could feel strong winds beat his body; he travelled so that his feet could kiss the soil of the mountains.
After his death, Xu left behind his famous book, Xu Xiake’s Travels, which provides meaningful materials to the Chinese geological research. It included a record of what he saw, heard and thought about during his travels and was a personal diary that was not published during his lifetime. It was said that Xu was a filial (孝顺的) son and the beginning purpose (意图) of his travel diary was to allow his mother to travel the world through his eyes at home. He followed the ancient teaching that says, “When one’s parents are alive, one must not travel to far places.” For this reason, when his mother was still alive, he mainly travelled the southeast half of the country and would not leave home for too long.
The most important part of his travels was his ten-thousand-mile journey to the southwest. He travelled from Zhejiang to Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangxi, then Guizhou, and Yunnan. This journey took him four years and he wrote about ten times more than he did in the past. In the morning, he would be climbing the mountains and crossing rivers. At night, he would lay out a piece of paper and record his daily experiences beside an oil lamp.

Many Americans find silence uncomfortable during a dinner. ① So in the United States, people often make small talk in certain social situations. Small talk is about different topics, only for keeping a conversation going. The topics might include the weather, sports, college lessons, clothing, food, etc. Small talk is very useful in social situations when you meet someone for the first time, or when polite conversation is expected and no serious discussion is wanted.
It’s common but not necessarily expected that one knows someone in a group before talking with him or her in conversation. In fact, at a party, “May I join you ” or a self-introduction is useful enough to get a welcome from a group and to join in a conversation. In some places, such as a concert hall or a theatre, a waiting room or a classroom, it is for strangers to start a conversation even without an introduction.
People in the United States expect those whom they speak to stop whatever they are doing and listen.
As a rule, the conversation distance between two people is at least two or three feet. ② Standing very close will make many Americans feel uncomfortable.

I sold my house and left my job. There was one thing that I just could not leave behind: my cat Willow. There was a simple way to solve it—I went on a journey with my best animal friend!
In the past 3 years, we have traveled over 70,000 kilometers around Australia. We have seen forests and beaches together. This year, we spent three months in the desert. I’m happy to go back to the beautiful beach, but I’m not sure what Willow thinks.
Some people were surprised to find that I was travelling with a cat. I remember that once a backpacker (背包客) at a campsite shouted, “Excuse me, there is a cat trying to get into your van!”
I know. The van, a tiny house on wheels, is our home. I built it by myself with a bed, cupboards, a kitchen—and plenty of places for a little cat to hide! It might be small, but the whole Australia is our garden.
Willow enjoys seeing the places she has never visited, but she doesn’t like to go too far from our van. She loves to sit on the dashboard (仪表盘) to enjoy the great sights. I put our photos on the Internet and look forward to hearing from people all over the world who are following our adventures (探险).
We are lucky. We always have each other and the whole Australia to see. I will treasure the memory for a lifetime. If Willow has taught me anything, it is that happiness doesn’t cost much. A bit of food, shelter and a whole lot of love will be well enough.

Family fights happen in every home. Maybe your parents don’t allow you to play video games, or your brother/sister takes your things without asking. These problems can make you feel angry or sad, but good communication can help solve them.
Why Fights Happen
·Different opinions: Parents may worry about your grades, while you care more about friends.
·Misunderstanding: Sometimes you forget to explain your feelings clearly.
·Busy schedules (日程安排): Family members may not have time to talk calmly.
How to Communicate Better
·Listen first: Before speaking, try to understand the other person’s thoughts.
·Use “I” messages: Say “I feel upset when...” instead of “You always...”.
·Choose the right time: Discuss problems when everyone is relaxed, not during dinner or before exams.
A Real Example
Last week, Li Ming argued with his mom because she refused to let him join a school trip. Instead of shouting, he wrote a note: “Mom, I feel sad because I really want to go. Whenever the exam season (季) comes, stress may come along. Here are some ways that have helped me and my friends go through this season.
When the stress of exams is really hitting me, I stop and take a walk. I usually borrow my neighbor’s dog and walk for about fifteen minutes. Many boys would simply choose to run for a while, or play ball games. All these help drive away your stress easily most of the time.
And if you find music helpful, give it a go. Listening to your favorite songs will surely make you relaxed. The best thing is that you just need to stay where you are silently and enjoy it.
But if you are a book lover just like me, read a book you like for half an hour. Reading can take you to places you’ve never been to. Putting yourself into a new world helps you forget your stress in this world for a little bit.
For sure, there’s nothing better than laughing. It can really keep worry off your mind! Very often I call my best friend and we talk about our good times or something funny on the phone, and I’m feeling better because I laugh a lot.
Remember many others also face the problem of stress just like you, and it is not something that you can’t deal with.

82 · Take a walk. · Run. · Play ball games.
Listening to music · It will make you less stressed. ·And you don’t have to 83 .

We live in a world where good health is usually related to a certain kind of appearance, but it doesn’t mean it is necessary for good health. How can you tell if you are healthy Here are some to look out for.
You eat when you’re hungry and stop when you’re full. This simple behavior is a symbol of healthy eating. “It sounds really silly, but many of us can’t do it,” said Geyer. Besides, you should eat a varied diet rich in whole foods. Natural food is much better than processed (加工的) food. What’s more, eating enough is very important.
Experts suggest 150 minutes of proper activities every week is good for our health, like quick walking. “Going quickly up two flights of stairs without stopping and feeling good suggests that your body can perform high intensity (高强度的) activity!”
You can face different kinds of emotions. Emotional health is as important as physical heat, and Geyer has a simple way of measuring (测量) it. “I think emotional well-being is facing various emotions and understanding that they’re all normal,” Geyer said. “And remember that no one of them is going to be permanent (长久的).”
You can wake up without an alarm clock. It is not surprising that not enough sleep is terrible for your health. Lack of (缺乏) sleep increases the risk of illness. That’s why it’s important to sleep for eight hours a night.
You have the energy to do the things you want to do. Geyer said that there was one word that kept coming to her mind when she thought of good health—energy. “Having the energy to do the things you want to do is usually a very good sign of good health,” she said.
Anyhow, remember that health is individualized (因人而异的). If you’re worried you’re not healthy or you’re just curious about where you stand, you can go to see your doctor.
