Football is a popular sport in Ghana, but when you volunteer to teach sport you’re encouraged to introduce
new sports and games from home. You may need to bring any special equipment with you, as it may not be
available for purchase in Ghana.

In the morning of the day I had decided to go without using plastic products — or even touching plastic — I
opened my eyes and put my feet on the carpet, which is made of nylon, a type of plastic. I was roughly ten seconds
into my experiment and I had already broken my rule. Since its invention more than a century ago, plastic has crept
into every aspect of our lives. It has made possible thousands of modern conveniences, but it has come with
downsides, especially for the environment.
My no-plastic day began at the bathroom, where the plastic coating of the door handle forced me to ask my
wife, Julie, to open the door. She did so with a “This is going to be a long day” sigh. I could not use my usual
toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo, or soap since they were packaged in or made from plastic. Instead, I used
eco-friendly products: a bamboo toothbrush with natural fibers and a shampoo bar with a fresh smell, and they
worked well.
Dressing and shopping posed challenges. Even my cotton pants had hidden plastic in tags (标签) and zippers
(拉链). A small accident with a plastic label left my finger bleeding, so I used paper tape instead of a plastic
Band-Aid, while my organic cotton underwear was fine. When shopping, I used cotton bags, glass containers, and
coins to avoid plastic credit cards and smartphones; lunch at a sandwich shop was served in my own glass container
with a bamboo knife and spoon.
In the park, I sat on a wooden chair to escape the plastic in everyday items. By the end of the day, I had made
164 plastic “violations”. Although my effort was imperfect, I learned that small changes—like using a metal water
bottle or reusable bags — can help protect our planet.
4. What might have led to the author’s plastic-free experiment
A. His routine behavior. B. His fear of breaking rules.
C. His pursuit of convenience. D. His environmental concerns.
第 5页/共 14页
5 What can be inferred from Julie’s “This is going to be a long day” sigh
A. She was excited about the experiment.
B. She foresaw the experiment’s challenges.
C. She wanted to join the no-plastic challenge.
D. She questioned the author’s eco-friendly efforts.
6. What does the experiment suggest about reducing plastic use
A. Complete avoidance is achievable. B. Plastic alternatives are ineffective.
C. Small changes matter despite challenges. D. Family support plays a crucial role.
7. Which would be the best title for the passage
A. A Day Without Plastic B. Modern Life and Plastic
C. Eco-Friendly Challenges D. Rise of Plastic Alternatives
C
As more species near extinction, scientists have been collecting samples of plants, animals and other
organisms in protected facilities around the world. Yet climate change, natural disasters, and wars can threaten
these modern “Noah’s Arks (诺亚方舟)”. Now, some researchers propose an out-of-this-world solution: to build
one on the Moon.
The plan is to construct the ark in a permanently shadowed region at the Moon’s south pole, where
temperatures remain around –196℃(–320.8°F). That is the minimum needed to safely store most animal cells
long-term, according to Mary Hagedorn and her team at the Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology
Institute. They argue that such a lunar gene bank would be far more stable than any on Earth.
Hagedorn’s team drew inspiration from the global seed bank in Svalbard, Norway—a subzero Noah’s Ark
situated high above the Arctic Circle. In 2017, melting permafrost (多年冻土) flooded that bank, putting its
precious seeds at risk. Events like this highlight the need for an extra backup plan.
Earlier, researchers at the University of Arizona proposed a lunar ark that would “shelter seeds, eggs, and
DNA” in caves known as lava tubes using a solar-powered system. In contrast, Hagedorn’s proposal maximizes the
Moon’s naturally cold, permanently shadowed regions that require no energy or constant human maintenance. In
these conditions, fibroblasts (纤维母细胞)—“one of the most powerful cells available”—could be safely stored
and later transformed into stem cells for cloning. Such technology might help rebuild endangered species or even
recreate ecosystems for future human settlements on the Moon or Mars.
第 6页/共 14页
The project faces hurdles such as radiation protection and microgravity effects on the samples. Moreover,
international cooperation is essential, as the scientific community must largely agree on the plan, and some Earth
communities consider the Moon sacred (神圣的). Although “nothing’s set in stone at this point”, the proposal
offers a promising new safeguard for Earth’s biodiversity.
8. Why do scientists propose building a lunar ark
A. To expand storage space. B. To promote space exploration.
C. To establish a research base. D. To preserve biological samples.
9. How does the author highlight the need for an extra plan
A By mentioning an Arctic seed bank failure.
B. By emphasizing the stability of arks on Earth.
C. By explaining how the deep cold preserves cells.
D. By listing the achievements of current gene banks.
10. What makes Hagedorn’s design different from earlier lunar ark ideas
A. It relies on power from lave tubes.
B. It holds more species than earlier arks.
C. It addresses cloning concerns properly.
D. It makes the most of natural lunar conditions.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of the lunar ark
A. Objective. B. Optimistic. C. Doubtful. D. Critical.

Picture this: You’re at a movie theater food stand loading up on snacks. You have a choice of a small, medium
or large soda. The small is $3.50 and the large is $5.50. It’s a tough decision: The small size may not last you
through the whole movie but $5.50 for some sugary drink seems unreasonable. But there’s a third option, a medium
soda for $5.25.
Medium may be the perfect amount of soda for you, but the large is only a quarter more. If you’re like most
people, you end up buying the large.
If you’re wondering who would buy the medium soda, the answer is almost no one. In fact, there’s a good
chance the marketing department purposely priced the medium soda as a decoy, making you more likely to buy the
large soda rather than the small.
第 7页/共 14页
I have written about this characteristic in human nature before with my friend Dan Ariely, who studied this
phenomenon extensively after noticing the pricing for subscriptions (订阅) to The Economist.
The digital subscription was $59, the print subscription was $125, and the print plus digital subscription was
also $125. No one in their right mind would buy the print subscription when you could get digital as well for the
same price, so why was it even an option
Ariely ran an experiment and found that when only the two “real” choices were offered, more people chose the
less expensive digital subscription. But the addition of the bad option made people much more likely to choose the
more expensive print plus digital option.
Brain scientists call this effect “asymmetric dominance (不对称优势)”, and it means that people tend toward
the choice nearest clearly inferior (较差的) option. Marketing professors call it the decoy effect which is certainly
easier to remember. Lucky for consumers, almost no one in the business community understands it.
The decoy effect works because of the way our brains assign value when making choices. Value is almost
never absolute; rather, we decide an object’s value relative to our other choices. If more options are introduced, the
value equation changes.
12. What does the word “decoy” in paragraph 3 most likely mean
A. Lie. B. Bargain. C. Trap. D. Bonus.
13. Why is the pricing for subscriptions to The Economist mentioned
A. To explain how the decoy effect was tested.
B. To illustrate a decoy effect case in marketing.
C. To note possible limitations of the decoy effect.
D. To highlight the significance of the decoy effect.
14. How does the decoy effect influence consumer behavior
A. It pushes consumers toward a target option.
B. It encourages consumers to purchase more.
C. It guides consumers away from inferior options.
D. It helps consumers discover their true preferences.
15. What can we learn about an object’s value from the last paragraph
A. It stays the same with more options. B. It is determined by comparing options.
C. It equals the object’s production cost. D. It affects the number of available options.

It was the second day in the new office, and Maya was still on her own. Except for the girl named Rashmi who
took her induction (就职仪式), there was no one else who had said a “hi” to the young woman.
Not only was it a new office, it was also a new city. While she had successfully climbed the corporate ladder
for a better salary, she hadn’t really made any acquaintances (熟人) in the new city or office yet. Looking at the
whole workplace from her seat at the end of the hall, Maya felt a sob (啜泣) coming. But she was a grown woman
and that was simply not an option.
She decided to eat her lunch, as lonely as it might feel. Her lunch box revealed a fried rice with vegetables and
an old memory hit her from the corners of her mind.
It was fifteen years ago and their sports period had just been canceled. The children had bought snacks from
the school canteen and were eating noisily. The class teacher came in with a young girl. “This is Tina, new to Delhi
and to your school. Make her feel welcome, y’all,” she said.
While the students said a big “hi” to her in chorus, that was all they did. Tina was seated right next to Maya,
something the latter didn’t like. So, she turned to Tina and said, “My best friend sits next to me. You have been
given this seat because she is absent today. Tomorrow, you have to find yourself a new seat, ok ”
Tina sadly nodded her head, but Maya didn’t care. The popular girl in class, Maya had a lot going for her —
she had many friends, the teachers loved her and she was the queen of debating. So, she hardly spoke to the new
girl who sat next to her for a whole week. When Maya’s best friend returned to school, Maya immediately made
Tina move to the back of the classroom. She never gave her much thought and after a year, Tina had left their
school.
