Most of us have told a lie at one time or another. However, scientists found that lying is bad for your brain. It may stop you from doing other important tasks. When you tell the truth, your brain doesn’t have to do any extra (额外的) work. But lying takes much more work.
Imagine you’re late for class. The teacher asks why and you decide to lie. So you say, “I picked up a book from the library.” Your teacher asks, “The book I assigned (布置) last time ” Then you must decide how to answer the question.
If you say yes, the teacher might ask you to show the book. So you might say, “No.” Now you have to think of a book. You need to make sure it’s a book the library actually has. See When you lie, your brain works a lot more to keep it from falling apart.
You just gave your brain a lot of extra work. An area called the prefrontal cortex (前额皮质) does the work. It’s the part in charge of (负责) short memory. That area also takes care of planning, problem-solving and self-control.
Using too much brainpower to lie means there’s less available for other things — like solving math problems. Lying is even harder for young people. The prefrontal cortex is not fully developed until age 25. So when young people are busy with lying, they’ll have a harder time doing other things, like making study plans or eating a healthy diet.
So think twice before lying next time!
59. What happens to your brain when you lie
A. It works more slowly. B. It has to do some extra work.
C. It helps protect you. D. It becomes better at answering questions.
60. What does the prefrontal cortex help people do
a. Build long-time memories. b. Make plans. c. Work out problems.
d. Relax our brains.
A. ab B. ac C. ac D. bd
61. Which of the following is TRUE
A. Lying makes it harder for the brains to deal with other things.
B. It’s much easier for young people to lie.
C. The older people grow, the more lies they will tell.
D. People who often lie can develop better brainpower.

Do you know that tennis is one of the most wasteful sports on the planet Tennis balls are quite difficult to recycle. Almost all of the 330 million balls produced each year and end up in landfills (垃圾填埋场). Once there, it can take as long as 400 years for the balls to decompose (分解).
The International Tennis Federation (ITF) serves as the governing (管理) body of professional tennis games. Last year, the ITF brought together ball makers, tennis officials, and recycling companies to solve the tennis ball waste problem. The group is working to find answers to questions such as: Can a recyclable ball be developed Can the ITF change the present rules so that balls can be used longer in professional tennis games Nowadays, professional players need a new set of balls after every nine games. This practice results in great waste.
Jamie Capel-Davies, head of science and technology at the ITF, said that there are four levels in the effort to reduce (减少) waste. “Firstly, we try to cut down on the number of balls being used. Secondly, we should use balls as many times as possible. It’s our third choice to recycle balls,” he explained. “Lastly, it is to place the balls in landfills.”
It is easy to come up with plans, but it can be difficult to carry them out. Luckily, many people have already taken steps to reuse tennis balls. One company collects used tennis balls and turns them into pet toys, while another company repurposes tennis balls for flooring material.

Once I tried saying “no”
Every experience is a kind of growth. Today I’d like to share with you my experience of trying saying “no”.
In the past, I always felt like I had to agree to everyone’s requests even if it meant stressing myself out. But recently, I realized I needed to consider my own needs. Last Friday, I refused an activity I just didn’t have the energy for. It was difficult because I was not used to refusing others, but I felt a sense of relief once I did it. Saying “no” taught me that it’s important to think about my own needs rather than always pleasing others. I’ve learned the value of self-care and not taking on more than I can deal with.
That’s my experience of trying saying “no” for the first time. I hope it can encourage you all to challenge yourself too.
Thank you for listening.
