Long long ago, King Swan (天鹅国王) had a beautiful daughter. On her 15th birthday, she wished that when she was old enough, she could choose her own husband. King Swan agreed with her.
When the princess was old enough, King Swan called all the birds to his home. Birds came from everywhere, even from far away. King Swan told his lovely daughter to choose one she liked. She looked over the many birds. Finally, she chose a green long-necked peacock (孔雀). She told her father, "This bird, the peacock, will be my husband."
Hearing that the peacock was the lucky one, all the other birds crowded around to congratulate (祝贺) him. The excited peacock said nothing but held his head high. Later he began to shout and show his beauty in a strange dance. The other birds started to laugh.
King Swan was angry. Standing in the middle of the birds, he said, "Sir Peacock, your voice is sweet, and you’re really very pretty. But you are not modest at all. I will not allow my daughter to marry you!"
The princess also learned she was wrong. Then King Swan married his daughter to a modest bird. The peacock flew away, having lost a beautiful wife.

The Possum used to have a long, hairy tail. He always sang about it at the dance. The Rabbit once had a long, hairy tail, too, but he lost his in a frozen lake. He was jealous (嫉妒的) of the Possum’s, so he decided to play a joke on him.
There was going to be a dance. It was the Rabbit’s job to send out the news. And he promised to send someone to dress the Possum’s tail for the dance, so the Possum agreed to go to the dance happily.
Then the Rabbit went to visit the Cricket, a hairdresser, and told him to dress the Possum’s tail the next morning for the dance. He told the Cricket what to do.
In the morning, the Cricket went to the Possum’s house. The Possum closed his eyes while the Cricket was dressing his tail with a red cloth. The Cricket told him, “If you want to get a surprise, don’t take the red cloth away.”
At night, the Possum went to the dance and the Rabbit took the cloth away.
The Possum began to sing, “See my beautiful tail. See what a fine color it has.” Everybody shouted and he sang again, “See how it sweeps the ground.” This time everybody laughed so long that the Possum wondered what they meant. He looked down at his tail and saw that there was no hair on it.

Nezumi was a mouse. He was thinking about finding a husband for her daughter Suki. But Suki said, “Father, I wish to marry Taro.”
Taro was smart and strong, but Taro’s parents were not rich or powerful. “My Suki can’t marry a common mouse!” Nezumi said. “I’ll find someone powerful for my daughter.” Nesumi traveled far and wide, but nobody met his high standards.

Nezumi bowed to Cloud and told him his wish. “Surely I’m powerful,” he said. “But here comes someone stronger.” And Wind blew Cloud away.
Then Nezumi shouted his wish to Wind. “Of course I’m powerful. But I can’t pass through Wall,” said Wind.
When Nezumi told Wall his wish, Wall said quietly, “Yes, I’m powerful. I keep enemies away. But I’m afraid of mice like you, who dig under me and make me fall down.”
Nezumi let out a big laugh. He ran back home and said to Suki, “My dear! You are right. Taro will be a powerful husband.”

Mr. Clarke hated to do the housework. He wouldn't stay at home on weekends. As his wife always told him to do some washing or cleaning, or he had to cook for his family. So he always made some excuses (借口) on Friday evenings.

Once upon a time, a king dressed up and went to a local village. He placed a large stone in the middle of the main road and hid gold coins under the stone. Then he hid behind a huge tree and watched.
The first person down the street was a milkman with his car (小车). He crashed into the stone and the milk spread all over the ground. “What fool put this stone here “he shouted. He picked himself up and angrily went away.
After a while, a group of women came along, each balancing a pot of water on her head. One woman tripped over (绊倒) the stone and her water pot went crashing to the ground. She picked herself up and walked away in tears. Neither she nor her friends thought about moving the stone out of the road.
The king watched all day as many people complained about the stone, but he found nobody was willing to move it. The king wondered, “Is there no one in this village who feels any responsibility to keep their neighbors from harm ”
Just then, the king saw a young girl coming along. She was the daughter of a local farmer. She had been working all day and was very tired. But when she saw the stone, she said to herself. “This stone is a danger to anyone who comes down the road after dark. I’ll move it out of the way.”
After a great deal of effort, the girl finally succeeded in moving the stone to the side of the road. Imagine her surprise when she saw the gold coins where the stone had been!
Just then, the king stepped out from behind the tree. “Oh sir,” the girl said, “Is this gold yours If not, we surely must find the owner, for he will certainly miss it.”
The king said, “My dear, the gold is mine, but now the gold is yours, because you are the only person who has learnt the lesson I want to teach my people. Nothing good can come to a nation whose people only complain and expect others to solve their problems.”
