Do our genes truly determine how long we live Or do our lifestyle and surroundings have a greater impact on
our health The latest study published in Nature Medicine reveals the answer to this question
Researchers studied data from more than 490,000 people in the UK Biobank. They focused on 45,000
participants whose blood samples were analyzed to measure their physical age compared to their actual age.
第 5页/共 13页
“By studying proteins in the blood, we can get an estimation of how quickly or slowly each participant is
aging biologically compared to their real age.” says lead researcher Austin Argentieri. This difference, called the
“protein age gap,” strongly predicts a person’s risk of death rate.
However, knowing that age gap is only part of the picture. Equally important is the cause of that gap. To
determine that, the researchers analyzed over 100 environmental and lifestyle factors, including income, education,
employment, marriage, smoking habits, and exercise routines.
The results were striking. Environment and lifestyle accounted for 17% of people’ s disease - related risk of
dying, compared to just 2% for genetics. Of the various environmental exposures, smoking was the riskiest
behavior, linked to 21 diseases; social and economic factors were associated with 19 diseases; and a lack of
physical activity was linked to 17 diseases.
Positively, according to the research, living with a partner, being employed, and being financially comfortable
had the greatest effecton extending lifespan(寿命).
The research demonstrates changing habits, such as quitting smoking, exercising more, or improving social
conditions through policies can greatly reduce health risks.
The researchers think that the study is still on the way. In the future, they recommend looking more closely at
multiple factors, including diet, exposure to novel diseases like bird flu, and environmental factors. All of these are
potentially powerful influences on lifespan.
28. What does the term “protein age gap” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. The gap caused by genetic factors.B. The difference between mental and physical age.
C. The difference between biological and real age.D. The time needed to repair damaged proteins.
29. What is the main finding of the research mentioned in the text
A. Physical activity alone extends lifespan significantly.
B. Genetics plays a critical role in determining disease risks.
C. Protein age gap has no connection with socioeconomic conditions.
D. Environmental factors contribute more to disease risks than genetics.
30. How did researchers come to the conclusion of their research
A. By finding protein age gap and figuring out the cause.
B. By studying and comparing data from the UK Biobank.
C. By studying proteins and dividing them into groups.
D. By analyzing and measuring their blood samples.
第 6页/共 13页
31. Which future research direction do the researchers suggest
A. Developing new drugs to slow biological aging.B. Carrying out policies to forbid smoking completely.
C. Focusing on improving genetic testing accuracy.D. Exploring the effectsof multiple factors on lifespan.
D
The market reaction was cruel. On January 27, 2025, when people realized how good DeepSeek’s“V3” and
“R1” AI models were, Nvidia (英伟达), a chip company, lost $600 billion in value. Even though DeepSeek’s
success worried some investors, it shows that competition and creation can make AI cheaper and more useful.
DeepSeek’s models are as good as those from Google and OpenAI but cost much less. Stopped by American
from using advanced chips, Chinese companies’ hard work has paid off.The cost of DeepSeek competing with the
best has dropped quickly. Withindays, DeepSeek became the most downloaded app on iPhones.
Sam Altman, the boss of OpenAI, has spent years telling investors they should keep ahead of AI field.
However, DeepSeek put their profits at risk. Nvidia was once the world’s most valuable company because people
thought the best AI needed very expensive chips. This is why DeepSeek’s success led to a stock(股票) market
dropping on January 27th.
DeepSeek created more winners than losers. Apple is glad that it did not spend billions on AI projects. It can
choose the best models like DeepSeek. However, the real winners will be consumers. For AI to change society, it
needs to be cheap, popular and out of the control of any one country or company. DeepSeek’s success makes this
possible.
Some have begun to doubt that DeepSeek improved by copying American technology. In fact, it is an
important new creation, causing more competition in AI field.
For years, top U. S. AI labs have been devoted to using advanced chips to improve performance, rather than
making models cheaper and faster. But DeepSeek shows there is a better way to improve algorithm (算法) based on
common chips.
32. What directly caused Nvidia’s sharp value drop on January 27th
A. Apple’s cooperation with DeepSeek.B. The U. S. government’s restrictions.
C. DeepSeek’s powerful and cheaper models.D. Investors’ lack of confidence in AI’s future.
33. What are DeepSeek’s advantages compared to OpenAI’s models
A. More useful and cheaper.B. More advanced and powerful.
C. More expensive and smarter.D. More reliable and profitable.
34. What does Apple’s reaction to DeepSeek’s success imply
第 7页/共 13页
A. Its plan to copy DeepSeek’s methods.B. Its concern about losing market share.
C. Its regret for missing AI investment opportunities.D. Its satisfaction with avoiding expensive AI projects.
35. What can we infer about DeepSeek from the last paragraph
A. Copying American models’ technology.
B. Cooperating with global companies to gain the chance.
C. Focusing on common chips and creative ways to improve.
D. Depending on advanced chips to reach computing power.

Michael Armus had just set foot into the Bank of the Westin Woodland,California when he felt the tension.
“Something’ s not right.”
第 11页/共 13页
It was on a sunny May morning in 2023, and the 69-year-old retired man was to deposit a check. Normally,
whenever Armus visited, he’d be greeted from the tellers, with whom he loved to joke and share his stories.
But today, none of the tellers responded to him. As Armus approached the teller windows, he noticed the three
employees had worried looks on their faces.
Armus looked to his left and noticed a man at another window with his T-shirt pulled up to partially cover his
face. “This is a robbery” thought Armus.
He heard the man say, “Idon’t want to hurt anybody.” Minutes earlier, the man had passed a note to the teller
demanding cash and saying he had a gun. Armus looked again and the man’s shirt had dropped a bit, exposing
more of his face.
“I’ve seen this guy!” thought Armus. He recognized the would - be robber as someone he’d passed several
times on a street corner reading the Bible aloud. Suddenly, instead of being frightened, Armus had pity on him, and
a thought came to his head, “Maybe I can help.”
He walked over to the man, 43 - year-old Eduardo Plasencia, and calmly asked, “What’s wrong Don’t you
have a job ”
Terrified,Plasencia looked at Armus and exclaimed, “There is nothing in this town for me. Nothing!” Then,
with tears streaming down his face, he said, “I just want to go to prison.”
“I heard something in his voice,” Armus explains. “I imagined how desperate he had to be. I was once in
prison and my life was a mess. But I got another chance. I know what it’s like to feel hopeless and helpless. And I
could hear those feeling in Plasencia’ s voice.”
“Let the police arrest me,” Plasencia said.
Armus knew the tellers were scared, and he wanted to get Plasencia out of the bank. Surprising everyone, he
put his arm around Plasencia and said, “Let’ s go outside and talk about this.”
