School is still out for the summer, but at Eastern Senior High School in Washington, D.C., students are hard at work outdoors. In a garden filled with flowers and beds bursting with vegetables and herbs, nearly a dozen teenagers are harvesting vegetables for the weekend’s farmers market.
Roshawn Little is going into her junior year at Eastern, and has been working in this garden for three years now. During the summer, Little gets paid to work Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a. m. until 2 p.m. with City Blossoms, a nonprofit that brings community gardens to schools in urban areas. She believes that working in the garden has taught her to try all sorts of new things, like eating different kinds of vegetables more often. And she’s taken those healthy behaviors home with her and her eating habits have encouraged her family to buy more fruits and vegetables.
City Blossoms is one of many groups across the country teaming up with local communities to build school gardens, like the one at Eastern. It works with schools to create learning gardens and trains teachers on how to use them to get students engaged and boost academics. These gardens are really outdoor classrooms. For example, the gardens can be used for math lessons, like calculating the area of a plant bed or learning the science of how plants grow.
For the students, the experience can be a nutritional eye-opener, which has totally changed their perceptions of where food comes from, and what it takes to produce food. Partner schools have also seen a 12 to 15 percent increase in the number of students passing standardized tests and 94 percent of teachers reported seeing increased engagement from their students, according to an independent evaluation conducted by PEER Associates.

5. What is the purpose of the school gardens
A. To provide a creative way of learning.
B. To-promote teachers1 teaching skills.
C. To get students interested in science.
D. To invite students to care for plants.
6. What does the last paragraph focus on about the project of City Blossoms
A. Its strategies. B. Its outcomes. C. Its operations. D. Its participants.

B. Happy Holiday, Sweet memory: How Kids Enjoy the Harvest
C. Outdoor Classrooms: Get out for the Weekend’s Farmers Market

“A lie can travel halfway around the world before the truth can get its boots (靴子) on,” said Mark Twain. In today’s Internet world of “fake (假的) news,” lies spread even faster and the truth is having trouble finding its boots.
To make matters worse, most young people get news from social media sites where facts are mixed with rumors, half-truths and complete lies. This has led to young people becoming confused. In the latest PISA, which tested 15-year-olds worldwide on academic subjects, fewer than one in ten of the examinees were reported to be able to recognize fact from opinion. A Stanford University study showed that students at all levels of education could not tell real news from fake news. In one instance,80 percent thought that a paid advertisement was a real news story.
Fake news is spread by people who have a prejudice (偏见). They want to influence public opinion either for or against something or someone. It is important, then, for young people to recognize when they are being used and to be doubtful about online information.
Traditional media, such as newspapers and television, are still the more trustworthy sources of information. Reporters are professional trained to look for facts, and editors have the job of making sure those facts are correct. However, if you are getting most of your information online, you have to be your own editor. In that case, the first thing to do is to look at the writer of a post. Is this person known to be objective Does the site where you read the post have a prejudice Next, look for other sources from mainstream media to make sure the information. In other words, by putting on your truth boots you won’t be fooled into chasing lies.
8. The author begins the passage with a quote from Mark Twain primarily to ______.
A. introduce the historical context of fake news
B. create a contrast between past and present information spread
C. build trust through a famous figure’s perspective
D. highlight the timeless challenge truth faces against lies
9. What does the writer say about young people with news around
A. They make fake news and spread it. B. They are easily fooled by fake news.
C. They get worried about their education. D. They can recognize facts from opinions.
10. What can we infer about traditional media from the text
A. Reporters work less professionally than online writers.
B. They never make mistakes in information.
C. Their reporters and editors ensure the fact is true.
D. They are less popular than social media.
11. According to the writer. what can help us avoid being fooled by fake news
A Only look for news through media. B. Become a professional and trained reporter.
C. Compare the news from different sources. D. Focus on the news instead of the opinion.
D
In 2021, scientists studying animal communication discovered that some dogs connect objects with words similarly to babies. Then what about cats, which are commonly believed to be unconcerned about human affairs
Saho Takagi, a researcher at Azabu University, doubted cats’ seeming unconcern. “Cats don’t appear to listen to people’s conversations, but in fact, they do,” said Takagi. According to previous research, cats understand human communication better than expected. Like dogs, they can use human pointing and stares to find food. They even can tell the difference between human facial expressions and states of attention, according to a 2016 study. However, cats can do more than that.
Another study showed that cats can discriminate their own names from the names of their cat companions (those that live in the same house). The researchers believed that cats learned to connect names with other cats by observing communication between their owners and their cat friends.
In a recently published study, Takagi and her colleagues compared two groups of cats: cats living with at least two other cats and cats living in “cat cafés” with up to 30 cats. Using a simple two-phase (阶段) test, they assessed the cats’ responses to hearing their names and seeing their faces on a monitor. Sometimes, the cat that appeared on the screen matched the name spoken; other times, the name and the image did not match. If cats knew the names of their cat friends, they would investigate by staring doubtfully at the monitor when the name and image did not match. House cats had a significantly longer stare than café cats, indicating that house cats generally expected a specific cat’s face upon hearing the cat’s name.
“This is the first evidence showing that house cats link human words and their social companions through daily experiences,” the researchers wrote. “However, we could not recognize the mechanism (机制) for learning. But with more and more scientists becoming interested in cats, who are much smarter than we assume, this question is sure to be solved.”
12. What’s people’s common understanding of cats
A. They have their own language. B. They can connect objects with words.
C. They show no interest in human things. D. They can use human instructions to find food.
13. By comparing cats and dogs in Paragraph 2, the author wants to stress ______.
A. cats and dogs are all clever animals
B. cats’ ability to learn is stronger than dogs’
C. cats and dogs can get along well with humans
D. cats’ ability goes beyond recognizing body language
14 Which of the following can replace the underlined word “discriminate” in Paragraph 3
A. Choose. B. Protect. C. Tell. D. Learn.
15. What is the unsettled question of the study
A. How cats can recognize other cats’ face.
B. Whether cats are much smarter than expected.
C. Whether cats can understand human communication.
D How cats link human words and their social companions.

Reading books can exercise your brain. Kids who started reading at an earlier age go on to perform better on certain intelligence tests, such as analyses of their vocabulary size. As one gets older, it might help slow down or even stop cognitive decline (认知下降). ____16____ Many Americans don’t read frequently. It’s time to reverse (逆转) this trend to give your brain gray matter a good workout.
____17____ When you have some down time — you’re waiting for a friend, sleeping lightly on the way from or to work, or doing a task that doesn’t require your full attention — you can open your text instead of pulling up your favorite smartphone game. This brings about a great debate: pages vs screens vs audio. Indeed, paper is still the clear winner in the court of public opinion.____18____
Academic research has mostly focused on the ability to remember. A study took place in a laboratory setting: Students all read the same text, but some looked at the words on paper and others viewed an on-screen PDF. It turned out that no meaningful difference between the two media existed. As for audiobooks, they affected the brain gray matter somewhat differently.____19____
Finally, if you hope to get a reading habit going, you shouldn’t dismiss paper, digital, or audio books — ____20____ Don’t be afraid to change things depending on the occasion.
A. Audiobooks still affect your thoughts and feelings.
B. Go with what makes the most sense for your needs.
C. Words on a page can improve the emotional intelligence.
D. But Science hasn’t proven that physical books are better than digital ones.
E. Keep a book, e-reader, or audiobook app on you as you go about the day.
F. Despite this, the overall book-reading time for Amerieans is on the decline.
G. However, they stimulated the brain just as deeply as black-and-white pages.

Father’s Day was in two weeks. I didn’t know what to get Dad. Last year I made him a photo album. This year I wanted to do something different.
At dinner, Dad accidentally dropped his favorite blue tie into his soup bowl. The tie was ruined. I suddenly knew what to get Dad for Father’s Day!
“How much does a tie cost ” I asked Mom the next morning.
“Depends,” she said.“ Some can cost twenty dollars. Do you have enough money. Carter ”
“No, ” I said sadly.
When I got to my room to change into my school clothes I noticed a hole in my shirt.
“Mom, I need you to sew(缝补) my shirt, I said loudly, rushing out the door to the school bus.
At school I picked at the hole in my shirt. I thought about how I could come up with enough money to buy a tie. I took a deep sigh, and played with the hold some more. As the hole grew in size, an idea sprung into my mind.
After coming home from school, I dug through my closet trying to find other worn clothes.
“Mom! "I yelled down the hall heading towards her.
Can I cut these clothes up to make Dad a patchwork(拼缝) tie for Father’s Day ” I pointed out the holes to Mom.
“ I guess,” he said.
“And,” I added, “Can you show me how to sew and make tiny stitches(针脚) ”
“Yes, Carter. Let s start now before Dad gets home.” Mom said, heading for her sewing supplies.
I followed Moms instructions and started making a patchwork tie. I gently pressed my foot on the foot pedal(缝纫机脚踏板) . Suddenly, the needle stopped and the machine made a horrible sound. “No!” I said.
“Try again, Carter, ” Mom instructed.
I took a deep breath and gently applied the pedal again. Unluckily, I failed again.

My Favorite Chinese Traditional Festival
Among China’s rich cultural celebrations, the lantern festival stands out as my favorite.
Falling on the 15th day of the first Chinese lunar month, the Lantern Festival turns cities into a magical wonderland decorated with colorful lanterns in various shapes like animals, flowers and even characters from legends. What I like best is guessing riddles on lanterns — a fun game for everyone! Families stroll together under the lantern-lit sky, sharing laughter and creating warm memories. And of course, no celebration is complete without eating sweet yuanxiao whose round shape symbolizes family togetherness.
For me, the Lantern Festival goes beyond the beautiful sights and tasty treats. It’s a reminder of our culture roots, the joy of reunion and love and the hope for a bright future.

Every day after school, I would try, and try, and try. Finally, I was able to work the machine with Mom’s continued help. Although my first stitches were big and far apart, I grew better and better and my stitches finally became closer together and looked nice.
On Fathers Day I handed Dad a small box. He tore the wrapping paper off and opened the box. “Wow! This is great, Carter!” he said, holding up the patchwork tie. “I remember that shirt of yours,” Dad said, pointing out the patches. “Thank you very much.” Dad’s hug was big and warm. “I’ll be sure to take this off when I eat soup.” he said, and we both laughed.
