There’s comfort in the bottom of a swimming pool.
In the open air, the noises all demanded your attention: the lifeguard’s whistle, the slapping of feet across the ground, the voices asking for different things. It reminded me of the school cafeteria, packed with kids: too loud to read a book in. But beneath the surface, things were quiet. The sounds that used to annoy me lost all their power. Instead, they mixed with the splashing of the water and the gentle blub-blub of air bubbles escaping my nose. All the noises worked together to create a symphony. Harmony.
Perhaps the best thing about the bottom of a swimming pool, though, was that at the bottom of a swimming pool, I was alone. I didn’t have to worry about anyone splashing or kicking or making fun of me. They were all far, far away up on the surface. It was only me. Just me.
I used to wish I could live underwater. Mermaids (美人鱼) didn’t have to go to school. Mermaids didn’t call other mermaids nerds (怪胎).
But once, when I came up for air, I spotted a girl my age at the other side of the pool. We locked eyes before I went back under, just for a second. I didn’t think anything of it — girls like her usually didn’t want to be seen around me — until I felt a soft tug on my ankle, and I spied her next to me. She actually wanted to talk to me. She wanted to be friends.
So we talked. And I found out that she liked Pokémon and Warrior Cats just like I did. And we competed to see who could make the biggest splash, and when it got dark and the lights came on, we explored the depths of the pool together.
I didn’t spend so much time at the bottom of a swimming pool after that How could I when there was so much waiting for me on the surface

Egypt is home to more than 100 pyramids, including the 4,500-year-old iconic (圣像的) Giza Pyramid, which is the last-standing ancient wonder of the world.
Giza is actually made up of three pyramids, Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure. Now, scientists are using High Energy Physics (HEP) to scan the Khufu structure at Giza. The new technology uses cosmic ray muons (宇宙射线介子) to scan deeper into the pyramid than has ever been seen before, and then map its internal structure.
What we see now is only the core structure of the Great Pyramid. Although the pyramid has been studied closely for centuries, there are two mysterious blanks that have kept archacologists (考古学家) puzzled.
One void (空间) is around 98 feet long and 20 feet high and could be one large space or several rooms, according to previous scans of the pyramid, while the other is much smaller, just beyond the north face of the pyramid. Archaeologists are not sure what either void functioned as; the most exciting possibility is that the larger space is the hidden burial chamber of Khufu, who was in power from around 2,551 BC to 2,528 BC.
The voids were discovered in 2017 when a project named Scan Pyramids ran a series of scans that analyzed the cosmic particles that fall to Earth (muons) to detect spaces within the structure. Muons are negatively charged elementary particles that form when cosmic rays collide (碰撞) with the Earth’s atmosphere. They are useful because they behave differently when interacting with stone, or water, versus air.
“We plan to field a telescope system that has upwards of 100 times the sensitivity of the equipment that has recently been used at the Great Pyramid,” a team of scientists wrote in a preprint paper—yet to be reviewed by other scientists.
“Since the detectors that are proposed are very large, they cannot be placed inside the pyramid, therefore our approach is to put them outside and move them along the base. In this way, we can collect muons from all angles in order to build up the required data set,” the team wrote in the paper.
8. What is the function of paragraph 1
A. To describe an ancient wonder. B. To present the new technology.
C. To highlight the Giza Pyramid. D. To introduce background information.
9. What do we know about the new technology
A. It moves above the base and builds up data.
B. It scans the side of the pyramid and collects muons.
C. It detects the outside of the pyramid and collects data.
D. It looks into the pyramid and records the structure inside.
10. What does the underline word “they” refer to in paragraph 5
A. Comic rays. B. Muons. C. Scans. D. Elementary particles.
11. What is this passage mainly about
A. Putting the detectors outside to collect data.
B. Discovering the voids using new technology.
C. Holding a telescope system to study the pyramid.
D. Uncovering the internal secret of pyramid using HEP.

Life is busy. We’re always expected to be productive and engaged, whether that’s with parenting, housework, or work. While taking time for small rewards can feel like a luxury (奢侈), the truth is that it is necessary for improving our mental health. A key psychological idea behind this is the Premack Principle, which explains why treating ourselves is more than a tendency; it’s a way to improve our daily lives.
In the 1960s, American psychologist David Premack developed a theory now known as Premack Principle. He explained that doing something you’re more likely to do can be a reward for doing something you don’t actually want to do. For instance, if you finish a task you’re not interested in, like cleaning the bathroom, you can treat yourself to something you like, such as watching an episode of your favorite TV show. This approach takes advantage of our natural need for fun to help us get through tasks we might not enjoy.
Recent studies keep showing that giving yourself rewards can help improve your work and happiness. For example, Woolley and Fishbach discovered that getting rewards right away can make you more motivated because it links the reward directly with the task. What’s interesting is that it’s not about how big the reward is but how quickly you get it that matters. Another study by Landry and others found it’s not the reward itself but rather how the reward makes people feel that helps them do their best. This makes sense because rewards boost our dopamine (多巴胺) levels, which plays a key role in how our brains feel pleasure.
The idea of giving ourselves “little treats” is not just about enjoying something; it’s proof of how positive reinforcement can change our behavior and make us feel better mentally. By carefully using the Premack Principle and rewarding ourselves, we can find more motivation (动机) to face challenges and lead a happier life. It’s okay torecognize and celebrate our efforts, big or small.
So, go ahead, give yourself that little treat. You’ve earned it.
12. What is the Premack Principle
A. A tool to work out a long-term plan.
B. Away to complete tasks effectively.
C. A means to make boring tasks enjoyable.
D. A theory to explain how rewards improve happiness.
13. According to Woolley and Fishbach, what helps to improve motivation
A. The type of tasks. B. The immediate reward.
C. The size of the reward. D. The level of dopamine.
14. What might be a “positive reinforcement” according to paragraph 4
A. A cleanup. B. Physical training.
C. Graduation ceremony. D. A favourite snack.
15. What is the most suitable title for the text
A. The Importance of Productivity B. Motivation and Mental Health
C. The Premack Principle for Life D. Dopamine and the Brain’s Pleasure
