With two Olympic medals and two world skateboarding titles,16-year-old Rayssa Leal has achieved what most people dream of. Her skills, paired with the joys she shows in skateparks, have brought her fans as well as public attention. But instead of talent and hard work, she shared that her support system made a big difference in landing her a medal at Paris 2024.
At the close of the run section of the eight-woman final, Leal had failed to put down a single, clean line, lowering her hope of a top three finish. She knew the game wasn’t over, but the already heavy stress on Leal’s shoulders doubled in weight.
“After I screwed up the two runs, I thought I was not going to be able to do it anymore.” Leal related her experience. It was then that she went and got support. Her family was there, and her whole team was there. Having received a hug from everyone and having heard very positive and encouraging words, she came back 100 percent, even more focused. That was what changed the game right there.
Re-energized, the teenager finished the last section with her very best. And though the gold and silver were out of her reach, she never backed down in the fight for bronze. When the last skater who could overtake her failed the last run, Leal said she fell into a ton of feelings. “As soon as I realised that I was in third place, I broke down. My coach was there. We hugged each other, and we cried together. And all I could think was the most positive thoughts in the world.”
24. What played a major role in Leal’s success at Paris Olympics
A. Effort. B. Skills. C. Support. D. Strategies.
25. What does the underlined phrase “screwed up” in paragraph 3mean
A. Focused on. B. Did badly in. C. Took control of. D. Gave up.
26. How did Leal feel when she hugged her coach
A. Grateful. B. Stressed. C. Peaceful. D. Anxious.
27. What lesson can be learned from Leal’s story
A. Actions speak louder than words.
B. A little encouragement goes a long way.
C. You cannot lose the game if you don’t play the game.
D. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is showing promise in earthquake prediction(预测), challenging the long-held belief that it is impossible. Researchers at the University of Texas, Austin, have developed an AI algorithm(算法)that correctly predicted 70% of earthquakes a week in advance during a trial in China and provided accurate strength calculations(强度计算)for the predicted earthquakes.
The research team believes their method succeeded because they stuck with a relatively simple machine learning approach. The AI was provided with a set of statistical(统计的)features based on the team’s knowledge of earthquake physics, and then ordered to train itself using a five-year database of earthquake recordings. Once trained, the AI provided its prediction by listening for signs of incoming earthquakes within the background sound in the Earth.
This work is clearly a milestone in research for AI-driven earthquake prediction. “You don’t see earthquakes coming,” explains Alexandros Savvaidis, a senior research scientist who leads the Texas Seismological Network Program (TexNet). “It’s a matter of milliseconds, and the only thing you can control is how prepared you are. Even with the 70% accuracy, that’s a huge result and could help reduce economic and human losses and has the capability to notably improve earthquake preparation worldwide.”
While it is unknown whether the same approach will work at other locations, the researchers are confident that their AI algorithm could produce more accurate predictions if used in areas with trustworthy earthquake tracking networks. The next step is to test artificial intelligence in Texas, since UT’s Bureau TexNet has 300 earthquake stations and over six years worth of continuous records, making it an ideal location for these purposes.
Eventually, the authors hope to combine the system with physics-based models. This strategy could prove especially important where data is poor or lacking. “That may be a long way off, but many advances such as this one, taken together, are what moves science forward,” concludes Scott Tinker, the bureau’s director.
28. How does the AI predict earthquakes
A. By identifying data from the outer space.
B. By analyzing background sounds in the Earth.
C. By modeling data based on earthquake recordings.
D. By measuring changes in the database of earthquake recordings.
29. What does Alexandros Savvaidis intend to show in paragraph3
A. The ways to reduce losses in earthquakes.
B. The importance of preparing for earthquakes.
C. The significance of developing the AI prediction.
D. The limitation of AI algorithms in earthquake prediction.
30. What does the follow-up research focus on
A.Conducting tests in different locations.
B. Applying the AI approach to other fields.
C. Building more earthquake stations in Texas.
D. Enlarging the database to train AI algorithms.
31. Which words can best describe the earthquake-predicting technology
A. Dependable but outdated. B. Effective but costly.
C. Capable and affordable. D. Advanced and promising.

The ability to remember and recognize a musical theme does not seem to be affected by age, unlike many other forms of memory. People with serious Alzheimer’s might not recognize faces, but can still sing the songs of their childhood, says Sarah Sauvé, a music scientist at the University of Lincoln.
The effect of age on the ability to recall music has been investigated, but Sauvé was interested in exploring this effect in a real-world setting such as a concert.
In her study, she tested how well a group of 90 healthy adults aged 18 to 86, were able to recognize familiar and unfamiliar musical themes at a live concert and another 31 people watched a recording of the concert in a laboratory. They listened to three pieces: a well-known Mozart piece and two new ones. One new piece had clear melodies(旋律), while the other was more unusual. Participants had to recognize a short melody repeated later in each piece.
The melodic piece from Mozart was equally well recognized across all ages and musical backgrounds, with no loss of recognition as age increased. All participants were less confident in recognizing the theme in the new melodic piece, and even less confident with the unfamiliar and unusual piece, but this didn’t change with age either. The study also found no differences between concert-goers and lab participants.
Steffen Herff, a cognitive(认知的)neuroscientist at the University of Sydney, Australia, says the reason music memory stay strong might have to do with the emotions that music stirs in people, which helps it stick in our memory. “We know from general memory research that, effectively, the amygdala — or emotional processing — operates a little bit like an importance stamp,” he says.
The study collected limited data on some participants’ cognitive health, and so did not provide detailed evidence of how neurodegenerative(神经退行性的)diseases affect memory recall. But Herff says there is great interest in using music as a form of ‘cognitive scaffolding’ — that is, as a memory aid for other information — in individuals with neurodegenerative conditions.
32. What does Sauvé’s study focus on
A. The role music plays in recognition tasks.
B. The difference between live and recorded concerts.
C. The ability to recognize unfamiliar musical themes.
D. The impacts of aging on music recognition in real-life situations.
33. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The design of the study. B. The reflection of the study.
C. The results of Sauvé’s study. D. The background of the study.
34. What role does the amygdala play in memory, according to Steffen Herff
A. It helps with reasoning.
B. It processes musical notes.
C. It identifies emotions in people.
D. It acts as a marker of importance.
35. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Music is of no use as a memory aid.
B. More data is needed for further study.
C. Music is useful for treating most diseases.
D. The data on cognitive health is not original.

How to Quiet a Complainer
Have you ever suffered your mother’s complaints about her aches and pains Lengthy complaints will ruin the quality of your time together. 36 Actually there are some ways to get a complainer to stop without starting an argument.
Change the subject. Some complainers will move on to other topics if you guide the conversation in a direction that interests them. If your neighbor is complaining about the phone company, tell her about an unexpected call you received from an old friend. If your coworker is complaining about your boss, ask whether he met the new employee. 37
Summarize the complaint. If your complainer keeps repeating himself, he may stop if you show that you’re listening. 38 Using “I” statements rather than “you” statements show that you’re interested rather than trying to shut the person down. Avoid saying the word complaining. Saying you hear their dissatisfaction gets the points across.
Try to be honest. When you have things to do, tell the complainer that you must cut the conversation short. 39 You can simply be honest, even saying you need to move on so the conversation doesn’t bring you down – especially if it’s someone who’s complained to you many times before.
40 When it’s someone very close to you–your partner, sibling, or best friend–who stresses you out with a lot of negativity, it’s important to talk about the problem with an open heart. Otherwise, if you bottle up your feelings and continue listening to repeated complaints, you may grow angry or start avoiding the person.
A. Have a heart-to-heart talk.
B. Challenge the person to act.
C. But you may not be brave enough to stop her.
D. Just get them off the focus that they’re currently on.
E. The problems start when complaining becomes a habit.
F. You don’t need excuses such as a work deadline or a dentist appointment.
G. Ask something like, “Can I tell you what I’ve heard and I understand how you feel ”

Scientific studies show that laughter produces chemicals to make people feel better, which means clown (小丑) doctors can be helpful.
I chose this 41 because of my experience of going to hospital when I was a kid. Although the doctors and nurses did a great job, hospitals weren’t really designed for children. I stayed there feeling 42 and a little bored.
After years’ 43 training, I work as part of a program known as “hospital clowning”. Being a clown doctor means I can help people by 44 them.
One day, 45 my curly rainbow wig (假发) and big red nose, I walked into the waiting area, where there was a familiar atmosphere of 46 and tension. At that time I noticed a small girl crying in pain, with her ankle (脚踝) was twice its 47 size. Her 48 parents were sitting uncomfortably on plastic chairs, trying their best to comfort the nervous and crying girl.
While the doctor focused on 49 her ankle, I got her 50 by doing a magic trick. Although she was clearly still in some pain, her scared and anxious look had been 51 first by a small smile and then by loud laughter as I 52 produced her sock from out of my pocket. Seeing their daughter so much happier has 53 made her parents more relaxed. My magic medicine did indeed seem to do the trick.
Even today, I am still 54 a broad smile as I remember all the fun and laughter of the day. While there might be more hospital visits ahead for Lara and others, I hope that clown doctors help make it a friendlier place to visit. After all, it really is true that 55 is the best medicine.

A 12-year-old boy saw something in a shop window that set his heart racing. It was a necklace with shining pearls. But the price, five dollars would buy almost a week’s groceries for his family.
Reuben couldn’t ask his father for the money. Everything his father made through fishing went to his mother, Dora, who struggled to feed and clothe her five children.
Nevertheless, he opened the shop’s door and went inside. Standing proud and straight in his flour-sack shirt and washed-out trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding, “Once we went to New York, my mum saw a similar one. I know she liked it very much, because she fixed her eyes on it. I will buy it for her. But I don’t have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me for some time ”
“I’ll try,” the shop owner smiled. “People around here don’t usually have that kind of money to spend on such good-looking but costly things. It should keep for a while. ”
Reuben respectfully touched his worn cap and walked out. He had made up his mind to raise the five dollars and not tell anybody.
Hearing the sound of hammering from a side street, Reuben had an idea. He discovered that he could collect the hessian sacks (麻袋) thrown away in the street and sell them back for five cents a piece.
Every day after school, Reuben walked down the town, collecting the hessian sacks. On the day when summer holiday began, no student was more delighted than Reuben. Now he would have more time for his “work”.
All summer long, Reuben kept on his secret task. Soon the leaves fell and the winds blew cold. Reuben wandered in the streets, diligently searching for his hessian treasures. Often, he was cold, tired and hungry, but the thought of the object in the shop window supported him.
Eventually, the time had come! It was Mothers’ Day. He poured the coins out and began to count. Then he counted again. He made it! Exactly five dollars, not a cent more, not a cent less.
