My family has always had family dinners, as far as I can remember. Since I was a little boy, my mother has insisted (坚持) that we attend family dinners at least once a week. Every Sunday, my mother would prepare a lot of food and bring it to my grandma’s house. We would wait for more family members to come before eating together at the table, my grandma’s dinner table.
I used to feel that was a silly little tradition. But now I find it’s fantastic to get together as a family to talk about anything and everything after a long week of school and work. Every time I sit at the dinner table, my grandma’s dinner table, I look around and find so many people who truly love me. It’s a love that feels so good. For me, dinner is not just a meal, but a chance to reconnect with each other.
I finally realize the true meaning of this tradition. It’s not about the dinners or activities. It’s about family, a group of people who care about each other. All the memories (记忆) around my grandma’s dinner table will last forever.

AI-powered speech translation (人工智能语音翻译) is nothing new nowadays. The working step is to record speech, change it into text, translate that into another language, and change it back to speech. 6
Usually, some official languages, like English or French, can be easily translated. Many other kinds of languages can’t be recorded by the system in advance. 7 After all, we note that about 3,000 languages in the world only have spoken forms. A new open-source system that can translate speech from one language into another in real time can solve this problem.
With the help of technology, communication can be much easier. The new system is hoped to be used to improve communication in both the real world and the virtual (虚拟的) world. So far, the system is only able to provide easy translations between English and Hokkien. Hokkien is another name for the Minnan language. 8 The system uses several ways to perform this task, including translating speech into acoustics (声学) and then forming wave forms from it.
Next, AI models will be trained by using Standard Chinese text as a translator between English and Hok-kien. 9 According to a researcher, however, this is just the first step toward making real-time translation between languages and reality in the future.
10 Only by breaking down language difficulties, such AI technology will hopefully lead to greater understanding among speakers of different languages.
A.However, this method has clear disadvantages.
B.Because they don’t have standard written forms.
C.There is still a long way to go for the technology.
D.The translation from AI technology isn’t so good as that by human.

Where does your food come from How is it made These days, many people worry about food safety. But food safety is not a new worry. In 1906, Upton Sinclair wrote The Jungle. The book is the story of a poor family in Chicago. It is also about the dangerous ways that food was prepared. People were so worried that the U.S. started testing food.
These days, most food in the world is safe. The reason is laws control where food comes from. They also control how food is managed and prepared. Laws are important. But it’s more important to make sure the rules are followed. A good food safety system keeps people safe. It also helps them eat healthy food. Labels (标签) on food give people important information. Then they can make good choices about their food.
Although food safety systems usually work, there can be problems. Sometimes mistakes are made. For example, a truck might carry eggs and then ice cream. The ice cream could make people sick when the truck isn’t cleaned before carrying it. Other problems are not mistakes. Sometimes companies break rules to make more money. When this happens, people don’t know if their food is safe.
As we all know, food is closely related to our everyday life. We should take action to make food safer!

E-waste is fast becoming a serious problem around the world. This report will examine this problem and provide some possible ways to solve it.
1 It is often cheaper to buy new products than to repair old ones. Also, through clever advertising, companies always encourage people to change their old TVs, mobile phones and computers for the latest models. E-waste is created when we throw away old ones. In the EU alone, about 8, 700, 000 tons of e-waste is produced each year. Sadly, just over 1, 000, 000 tons is recycled.
Burying (填埋) e-waste or burning it cause serious problems for the environment. 2 These things can then get into the ground or pollute the air when they are burnt.
3 However, their plans are not always managed properly. Sometimes electronics are just sent to poor countries such as Ghana. Here they are often burnt in public areas, which is very bad for people’s health. Seting up recycling centers is a good way to solve this problem. E-cycling centers could recycle the parts that can be reused and deal with the rest properly.
4 This means that producers must take back old products. They should then make sure old products are properly recycled or reused.
As for us, we should try to cut down on e-waste. 5 And don’t buy a product just to have the latest model. E-waste is a serious problem in the modern world. Both producers and users must take actions and try to keep it to the smallest amount.
A.Change electronics only when we have to.
B.We live in a society that is producing and using electronics all the time.
C.Electronics have dangerous things in them.
D.We should change our electronics as soon as possible.
E.In recent years, many countries have started recycling e-waste.
F.Electronics are safe things so we don’t need to change them.

E.At present, the system can simply translate only one sentence at a time.
F.It’s a kind of local Chinese language that does not have a standard written form.

Do you want to be an astronaut in the future Every year on April 24, it’s Space Day of China. It’s a day to celebrate the country’s growth in space exploration. The successful manned space missions (任务) are a big part of it. Ever since Yang Liwei made it to space in 2003, as many as over 20 Chinese astronauts have gone to space. Being an astronaut is cool but sometimes dangerous.
What problems do astronauts face
In space, astronauts face many problems. There is little gravity there, which influences their bodies. Also, being away from family and friends and stuck in a tiny spaceship for a long time can make them feel sad or stressed out. What’s more, if something goes wrong on their mission all of a sudden, they have to work out how to fix it under huge pressure. That’s why astronauts have to be smart, strong and ready for any challenge before they can go to space.
How are astronauts trained
To make sure that Chinese astronauts complete their missions and return to Earth safely. “Eight types, covering more than 200 subjects of training, are set.” Huang Weifen, chief designer of the astronaut system for China’s manned space project, told CCTV News. Apart from physical training, it also includes basic science knowledge and mock (模拟) missions. Before astronauts can go to space, they train like this for at least three and a half years.
One of the hardest parts of the training for astronauts is the underwater training. This helps them get ready for the weightless environment in space. Huang explained that astronauts wear diving suits (潜水服) that weigh more than 100 kilograms and stay underwater for six hours at a time. Moving around in the water with such a heavy suit is really tiring.
Huang said that one astronaut, Nie Haisheng, even lost 2 kilograms after one underwater training exercise.

“Many young people in their 20s come to me for neck and back pains which are usually connected with the elderly,” said Ma Huifang, a professor at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, who is also a TCM doctor. “I have noticed such diseases becoming more common among a younger age group.” When faced with the choice between Western medicine and TCM, young people often prefer TCM because it does work for these diseases, according to Ma. “One of TCM’s main advantages is that it can provide a more proper and personalized medical method for different patients,” Ma added.
TCM has a growing influence on young people’s lives, too. Many of them not only add TCM practices into their daily lives, but also learn TCM skills to treat themselves and others.

G.Another way is to make producers responsible for their used products.

As Chinese, we learn and use Chinese characters (汉字) all the time. 16
At first, the characters were paintings about the things people saw in their daily lives. However, it is quite impossible to describe so many things by drawing. 17 Among them, jiaguwen is the earliest kind of Chinese character. Then it developed into different forms in different times.
18 In its form, we can still find the image of a loong (龙): the part on the left is its head, while “立” is its horns (角) and eyes and “月” is its mouth, and the right part is its body.
Next, is there a deeper meaning hidden behind it In fact, there is no loong in real life. 19 It is said that the loong really played an important role in farming, so people looked up to it very much. And as time went on, the loong’s role in people’s thoughts became more and more important. 20 That’s why the ancient emperors’ clothes always had the image of “loong” while common people’s didn’t. Nowadays, we are known as the “descendants (传人) of the loong”, so “loong” also stands for China.
In a word, Chinese characters are a valuable part of Chinese culture. We have the duty to study and spread them. In this way, more and more people will know China better in the future.
A.One of my favorite hanzi is “龍”.

Now, what happens in the book is becoming a reality. Wearing a VR headset, you can meet other people wherever they are. You can work and play with them. It will feel real because the technology can simulate (模拟) our senses: vision, hearing, touch, and even smell.
“We’re talking about creating another reality, another world, that’s as rich as the real world,” said Rev Lebaredian, vice president of simulation technology at NVIDIA, a US tech company.
So, what can you do inside of the metaverse Your location will no longer matter, says VOA News. In the metaverse, “people...would be connected at all times…” You can meet friends from other countries and go on a virtual beach vacation together. But forget Thailand — you can go to the beach on the moon, or anywhere else you can imagine. Can’t find a friend to play basketball Jump into the metaverse and find some friends to play with or go to a concert!
Cathy Hackl, an expert in metaverse technology, said her son’s first concert was inside of a video game. “Just because it happened in a video game, it didn’t make it less real for him,” she said.
Perhaps the metaverse will change our idea of what is real.

The history of prepared food can go back to ancient times when early humans used methods like drying, smoking, and salting to keep food, so that they could get something to eat during food shortage. However, China’s prepared food industry has a late start and has gone through a three-stage development process.
In Stage 1, which began around 2000, prepared food mainly appeared in some restaurants to meet the needs of busy city life and changing dietary patterns. Over time, it could be found everywhere and entered people’s daily lives.
Stage 2, known as the standstill period, lasted until 2013. During this period, the prepared food industry in China went through slow growth because the food processing technology did not have any great improvements.
Stage 3, marked a period of rapid growth that started in 2014 with the development of the take-out industry, which furthered the development of prepared food. Prepared food has become a convenient solution to the fast-paced nature of modern life, where many people have no time and cooking skills to prepare meals. Changes in people’s lifestyles have further sped up this direction. The rise of the take-out industry has created a fast increase in the need for convenience food, driving the growth of the prepared food market.
While the rapid growth of the precooked food market in China has provided convenient choices for busy lifestyles, offering different kinds of food from frozen ready-to-eat meals to canned products, worries still stay regarding the nutritional (营养的) quality of precooked food, health standards, and the environmental influence of packing materials, especially when it comes to introducing prepared food into schools.
