From the last of the Seven Wonders of the World left standing to a presidential gaffe (失态) that inspired a huge new project, these are only a few of the incredible historical places worth exploring in Egypt.
The Great Pyramid of Khufu
The Great Pyramid of Khufu in Cairo is the largest and most northerly of the three famous pyramids at Giza, and the only one of the Seven Wonders of the World left standing today. As the largest pyramid ever built, it is a wonder mainly because of its grand scale (规模) and the incredible precision with which the building work was conducted. Designed by Khufu’s cousin Hemon, the pyramid originally stood 482 feet high with four equal sides each measuring 755 feet.

Access to the temple is via the Avenue of Sphinxes, which once stretched 1.86 miles from the Luxor Temple to the Temple of Karnak in the north.
The New Gourna
The New Gourna is an uncompleted housing project in Luxor from the 1940s that was created to move away the villagers of Old Gourna, who economically sustained their community by stealing local Pharoanic tombs — much to the displeasure of the Egyptian Department of Antiquities, who wanted to move the 7,000 locals away from the area. During her adventure, Henion encounters naturalists, biologists and others who’ve devoted their lives to studying creatures in the dark.

Best books chosen by Pagan Kennedy
Pagan Kennedy is an all-round individual widely known for her work as an author, journalist, and speaker. Below are the books she recommends offering hope and companionship in dark times.
Tunnel 29 by Helena Merriman (2021). In 1961, a wall went up around East Berlin in the middle of the night, preventing almost everyone from fleeing. That step into fascism (法西斯主义) inspired a group of students to engineer an escape route, digging a tunnel that snaked from a basement in East Berlin to freedom. Merriman has reconstructed a lost history that unfolds like a heist movie (盗匪电影).
Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin (1956). Baldwin tends to be remembered as an essayist and author of The Fire Next Time. But if you’re exploring his work, consider starting with this novel, a page-turner about people trying to live their truth in the 1950s.
Empire of Pain by Patrick Radden Keefe (2021). I was sucked into this book because I couldn’t look away from its characters’ evil. In a lightning war of brilliant reporting, Keefe reveals how the most sinful members of the Sackler family built a Big Pharma empire and pushed opiates (鸦片) into doctors’ offices and eventually the streets.
The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood (1985). Years ago, Atwood asked herself a question, “If you wanted to seize power in the United States and set up a dictatorship, how would you go about it ” The 2017 TV adaptation of this novel was excellent, but you should really hold the story in your hand and read it. After all, it portrays a terrible society in which women have lost the right to even touch a book.
1.What is special about Tunnel 29 according to the text
A.It was created by James Baldwin. B.It is based on a true-life story of escape.
C.It was written to oppose fascism directly. D.It has been adapted into a popular movie.
2.What attracted Pagan Kennedy to Empire of Pain
A.The evil figures within the narrative.
B.The author’s brilliant writing style.
C.The book’s focus on scientific innovation.
D.The exposure of the Sackler family’s business model,
3.Why does Pagan Kennedy suggest reading The Handmaid’s Tale
A.Because its TV adaptation is not as good as the book.
B.Because it describes a unique power-seizing process in the US.
C.Because it helps people understand the current social situation better.
D.Because it shows a terrifying society where women’s rights are severely restricted.

Correct First Aid Misbeliefs
As for parenting, first aid knowledge is important. Yet there exist several commonly held beliefs that, unfortunately, are incorrect. These mistaken beliefs can stop us effectively responding to emergencies involving our children. Here are the current recommendations from the Red Cross for each misunderstanding.
NosebleedsIncorrect: Put cotton wool balls into the nose to stop the bleeding. Why: In reality, putting them into your kids’ nose can prevent blood clotting (凝结) and likely make the bleeding worse. Correct: ●Sit forward and squeeze the nostrils below the bridge to close the nose for 10-15 minutes. Breathe through the mouth during this time. ●After the bleeding stops, don’t blow, rub or pick the nose.
BurnsIncorrect: Immediately apply ice or butter for heat burns to relieve the pain. Why: Ice applied directly to burned skin can increase skin damage. It slows healing and makes it harder for a doctor to treat the burned area. Correct: ●Cool the burned area with cool water for 10 minutes. ●Cover the burn loosely with a clean bandage. If the burn gets worse or infected, see a doctor.
FeverIncorrect: Use rubbing alcohol to lower a fever. Why: Wiping rubbing alcohol on the skin doesn’t cool the body or reduce fever. And it can be absorbed through skin, especially for your kids and babies, causing alcohol poisoning. Correct: ●Give fever-reducing medicine. ●Call a doctor if you’re unsure or the fever doesn’t go away.
1.What is the correct practice for a nose bleeding according to the text
A.Blocking the nose with cotton.
B.Holding the nose closed for a moment.
C.Blowing the nose to clear blood.
D.Raising arms to a certain height.
2.What is the mistaken belief about the treatment of burns
A.Butter can worsen the burned area.
B.Cool water cannot touch the burns.
C.Ice can relieve the pain immediately.
D.The burned area can’t be covered by a bandage.
3.Which of the following is the side effect of using the alcohol to lower a fever
A.Alcohol poisoning. B.Skin damage.
C.Higher temperature. D.Pain and discomfort.

Almost every day, we learn of disasters of one form or another through the media. These include not just major disasters that affect large areas for a long time. A severe storm, an electric power breakdown, or a house fire can bring a personal disaster to an individual. This brochure aims to help you develop your personal preparedness plan.
Stockpiling food and drink
●Drinking is more important than eating. Keep about 14 liters of liquid per person in stock for each week.
●No experiments. Your supplies should mainly consist of food and drink that you normally have.
●Ensure that your supplies can be stored for long periods of time without refrigeration and that most of them can be eaten cold.
Electric power breakdown
●Keep a supply of torches and candles, as well as spare batteries, matches or lighters in the house. Remember that batteries do not last indefinitely. Regularly use the batteries up and replace them.
●You can prepare smaller meals on a camping stove, one that can be operated through the use of charcoal or gas.
Emergency pack
●The aim of a disaster supplies kit should be to help you to cope with the possibility of having to exist for a few days outside of your house. Don’t take more for each family member than could be conveniently contained within the confines of a rucksack. A rucksack is more practical than a suitcase, as it allows you to have both hands free.
●The emergency rucksack should contain these items
—First aid materials, personal medication
—Food for two days in dust-proof packaging
—Water bottle, cutlery and crockery
—Sleeping bag or blanket
—Hygiene products for a couple of days
●The correct clothing
—Waterproof clothing and shoes
—Masks or damp cloths that you can hold in front of your mouth in the event of danger from chemical substances.
Keep up-to-date in an emergency
Floods or heavy snowfalls may lead to parts of the population getting cut off from the outside world. Information and warnings are important for survival. Those who are trapped can often only be reached by radio, television or the Internet. However, television and the Internet only work when there is electric power, which could fail. This leaves just the radio as the main warning device. Therefore, always keep a battery-powered radio or a wind-up (用手柄操作的) radio in the house.
