Gaocheng, a village about 20 kilometers north of Hangzhou city, has 204 families and a population of 895. In
June, 2020, the village started an activity to help its villagers develop the habit of sorting waste. In December, the
village won a monthly competition (比赛) among over 20 villages. It setsa good example to the other villages
now.
In front of each of those families now stand two dustbins, a green one for waste that goes smelly easily and a
gray one for anything else. Every day after dinner, volunteers check whether the rubbish has been put into right
bins. This makes the job easier for those who collect the rubbish the next earlv morning.
According to every family’s performance, volunteers give them a mark every day. Once a month families can
change the total marks into things such as eggs and cooking oil.
One of the villagers, Li Rongchun, said that it was difficult to ask villagers to properly sort waste because

over the time they have realized its importance and have become better at it. And most families perform well
enough to be able to get the highest mark.

Lightning is one of the most beautiful natural phenomena(现象). It is also one of the most deadly
phenomena. A bolt of lightning is six times hotter than the surface(表面)of the Sun and gives out 30,000 amps
of electricity(电). It can travel at 100, 000 kilometres per hour and has the ability to hit a target up to 40
kilometres away. About 1, 000 people around the world are killed by lightning every day.
Only about ten percent of people struck by lightning will actually die, but the others are actually very badly
injured, with burns, broken bones, blindness, deafness, paralysis, or memory loss. However, when the electricity
passes through their brain, it can occasionally have unusual and even positive effects. Some blind people have got
their sight back after being struck by lightning. One woman said a psychological test showed her intelligence (智
力)had greatly improved, and one man said he could no longer feel cold at all and could go out in temperature
below freezing in just a T-shirt!
So what should you do to stay safe in a thunderstorm The most important rule is to stay inside, but do not go
near phones, electrical appliances, plumbing, or water. If you are stuck outside, do not take shelter under a tree.
Instead, roll yourself up into a ball on the ground as small as possible. And do not think it has to be raining in
order for lightning to strike.
6
Strangely, lightning seems to prefer some people to others. If you are a man, you are six times more likely to
be struck by lightning than a woman!

Confucius lived in the Kingdom of Lu, which was in Shandong Province. He lived during the Spring and

child, he had to work to help his mother, but young Confucius didn’t give up studying. He visited many famous
teachers and learned music, history, poetry and sports.
Later, he became a teacher and started the first public school in Chinese history. At that time only children
from wealthy families could go to school, but Confucius believed everyone should go to school if they wanted to
learn. He had about 3,000 students in his lifetime and traveled with his students from state to state.
Today, people still follow Confucius’ lessons. He told us that we all have something worthy to be learned.
“When I am with three people, one of them must be better than me in some areas. I choose their good qualities
and follow them.”
He also taught us that thinking is very important in study. “All study but no thinking makes people puzzled
(困惑的). All thinking but no study makes people lazy.”

五、回答问题
Why are so many people so afraid to fail Quite simply because no one tells us how to face the failure(失败).
In fact, failure can become experience that means growth. We forget that failure is part of the human condition
and that every person has the right to fail.
Most parents work hard to prevent failure or protect their children. One way is to lower standards. Nearly
60% of the parents choose this way. When a child finishes making a table, the mother describes it as “perfect”
even though it doesn’t stand still. The other way is to blame (责怪) others. If John fails in science, his teacher is
unfair or stupid.
There’s a problem with the two ways. It makes a child unprepared for the real life if they don’t meet enough
failure. The young need to learn that no one can be best at everything, no one can win all the time, and that it’s
possible to enjoy a game even when you don’t win. The young should be allowed to experience failure and be
helped to come out of it.
Failure never gives people pleasure. It hurts both grown-ups and children. But it can be really good to your
life when you learn to use it. Ask yourself what you did wrong and how you can improve. If someone else can
help, don’t be shy about asking them.
