Emily Bhatnagar has always loved reading. Growing up, she was really shy, so she always turned to books. They sort of became her best friends when she didn't have one.
In 2019, when Bhatnagar was in her second year of high school, her dad was diagnosed with cancer. The news was difficult for the family. Books became an even bigger comfort, and she started thinking about families in similar situations. When her father recovered, she came up with a plan to help others. “The idea came from just deep gratitude that the doctors were able to save her father,” she says. “But also a hint of sadness that there were kids who were fighting the same battle.” Bhatnagar started a book drive in her hometown, Gaithersburg, Maryland. The goal was to collect books and give them to kids being treated for cancer in local hospitals. Her father was not surprised by this plan. “She was always interested in books, and she always wanted to do things for
the neighborhood,” he says. Since the start of the book drive, which she calls For Love & Buttercup, Bhatnagar has collected more than 10,000 books.
Bhatnagar had no idea how much attention her work would get. She started by posting on social media, asking people in her area to donate. “I was expecting maybe two or three responses from neighbors,” she says. “But it ended up blowing up,” especially when news stations began reporting it. The public response has been super great.
Bhatnagar continues to run the book drive and hopes to one day expand the project to reach more kids. The memory of the first time she visited children who’ d received her books sticks with her. “It was the best day of my life,” she says. “I realized I wanted to do this type of work forever.”
24. What can we learn about Bhatnagar from paragraph 2
A. She loves her father dearly. B. She cares for sick children.
C. She got into a habit of reading. D. She fought hard against cancer.
25. What is For Love & Buttercup aiming to do
A. To collect over 10,000 books. B. To stimulate children's interest in books.
C. To help raise money for the poor. D. To donate books to kids with cancer.
26. How did Bhatnagar feel about the public response to the book drive
A. It's unexpected. B. It's confusing.
C. It's unsatisfactory. D. It's immediate.
27. Which of the following best describes Bhatnagar
A. Serious and humorous. B. Caring and ambitious.
C. Brave and strong-willed. D. Generous and warm-hearted.

Traditional micro-robots often face limitations due to their power sources, but recently developed insect-sized robot powered by tiny explosions(爆 炸 ) has demonstrated the ability to climb, jump, and carry loads many times its own weight.
The robot, mainly developed by materials engineer Robert Shepherd at Cornell University in New York, along with his PhD student Cameron Aubin, is powered by tiny actuators(致动器). “The actuator looks like a column. It's an empty cylinder with a stretchy rubber on the top,” said Aubin.
The researchers employed four actuators to drive the robot's feet. To make the robot jump or climb, a stream of methane(甲 烷 ) and oxygen was fed into each foot and sparked (触 发 ) with electricity from a battery. The resulting reaction between the gases released energy as a small explosion, causing the rubber to change its form.
Shepherd noted that the rapid explosions were so tiny that they didn't damage the rubber. But
they provided considerable propulsion: the robot could jump to a height of 56 centimeters and carry a load 22 times its own weight.
“This team has brought chemically powered actuation to impressive ranges for robotics while also demonstrating impressive capabilities for insect-size machines,” said Ryan Truby, a materials scientist at Northwestern University in Illinois.
Robots that are small and light but strong and able to cover large distances could one day be used in environmental monitoring or search-and-rescue applications. And the robot built by Aubin and Shepherd, described in a paper published in Science, would need further development for use in
the field. “At the moment, it needs to be connected to a panel that contains the gas supply and a
battery, a limitation that presents a ing up with ways to burn fuels on a wireless robot is not easy,” said Truby. “This is the next big challenge to address.”
28. Why does the recently developed insect-sized robot stand out
A. It is extremely tiny and light. B. It is equipped with a column.
C. It is extremely swift and quick. D. It is driven by explosive force.
29. What happens when the methane and oxygen is sparked
A. The reaction creates a mixture of gas to drive the robot.
B. The reaction generates heat that is changed into movement.
C. The reaction transforms a stretchy rubber to drive the robot.
D. The reaction provides electricity that is changed into movement.
30. What does “propulsion” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Ability to move. B. Possibility to develop.
C. Force to push things. D. Electricity to spark gases.
31. How can Aubin and Shepherd make advancement to the robot they built
A. They can use more actuators to provide larger power.
B. They can design programs to control the robot efficiently.
C. They can work on methods to to enable energy production wirelessly.
D. They can connect the robot to a panel containing gas supply and a battery.

If you have ever dreamed of making money from making music but are worried that you have little talent, don't let that stop you—a man called Alex Mitchell might be able to help.
Mr. Mitchell is the founder and boss of a website and app called Boomy, which helps its users create their own songs using artificial intelligence (AI) software.
It is easy to use the app to help you compose the music. What you need to do is choose from a number of
types click on “create song”, and the AI will compose one for you in less than 30 seconds. It is able to quickly choose the song's style and melody(旋律). And from there you can then finish your song with ease. You can do things such as adding or removing instruments, making everything sound brighter or softer, and recording some songs.
But, how good are these Boomy-created songs It has to be said that they do sound very computer-produced. You wouldn't mistake them for a group of people making music using real instruments. However, using AI to help create music isn't quite new. US classical composer, David Cope, developed such a software system back in the 1980s. One day he set it up to write pieces similar to those by Johann Sebastian Bach. Mr. Cope then went out for a sandwich, and returned to find that the computer had created 5,000 Bach-styled pieces. These were later made public on an album called Bach on purpose. More recently, in 2019, US electronic music composer, Holly Herndon, made an album called PROTO working together with an AI system called Spawn that she had co-created.
Mr. Mitchell says that technological advancements in AI have made songwriting software much cheaper. It's not just for musicians anymore, it's for most people like you and me.
32. What's the purpose of setting up Boomy
A. To develop music education. B. To record and sell music for money.
C. To help users learn AI technology. D. To help users create their own songs.
33. What can we learn about creating music by using AI
A. It is difficult to master. B. It is highly effective.
C. It is newly invented. D. It is only fit for Bach's works.
34. What can be inferred(推断) about songwriting software from the last paragraph
A. It is becoming more expensive. B. It is becoming less popular.
C. It is becoming more convenient. D. It is becoming less important.
35. Which part of a newspaper does the passage most probably come from
A. Culture. B. Environment. C. Lifestyle. D. Technology.

38 This time, Cartier sailed deeper into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and into the Saint Lawrence River. The two Native Americans he had taken before had learned French, and they served as guides. About 260 miles inland, Cartier reached the Native American village of Stadacona. Today, the city of Quebec stands near that place.
Cartier and his men were among the first Europeans to winter in what is now Canada. 39After returning to France he reported tales told by the native people of treasures farther inland.
Cartier once again crossed the Atlantic in 1541. 40 When he returned to France in 1542,he was told that they were just the common minerals pyrite(黄铁矿)(fool's gold) and quartz(石英).

第二节 (满分 25 分)
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was cool and bright and just right for running. I was in the first few miles of a 10-mile race through some hills. Birds were singing on the trees. The soft wind was brushing my cheeks. I felt rested and springy. Despite the hills, I thought it was going to be a fine run.
Ahead was Blake, a student from Burke High School. He was running easily, too, moving along efficiently. The pace felt comfortable, so I decided to stay where he was; why bother concentrating on pace when Blake was such a nice pacesetter for me I would overtake Blake later on when he used up energy.
So I ran closely behind him. The course headed north for five miles, wandered west for a mile, and then turned south again. The race was getting tougher. With three miles to go, it was beginning to be real hard work. My lungs were on fire, and legs felt like stone.
Blake overtook the boy in front of him. Apparently he knew the boy, for they exchanged a few words. Their brief communication worried me. Runners don't chat during a race unless they feel really good, and Blake plainly was. There was still a noticeable bounce in his steps, but the springiness I had once possessed was gone.
Still, I was close enough to overtake Blake if he was tired, so I didn't give up hope completely. We were approaching a hill, a mile from the finish line, so whatever happened on the hill would almost certainly determine who crossed it first.
As I moved up the hill, my attention wandered for a few minutes. When I looked up, Blake was moving away, first five yards, then ten, then more. There was no hope of catching Blake.
注意:1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Suddenly Blake slowed and sat onto the ground painfully.
A reporter took a picture of this moving scene and posted it online.
