In the city center, firefighters quickly get ready when they hear the alarm. Within 60 seconds they are dressed and rushing to a burning building. Even though they know the floors might collapse and the ceilings could fall, they still have to go inside. One wrong decision might mean death.
Who would do a job like that Ask firefighter Sam Telfer. One month ago, he signed up for the job. He used to sit in an office of a software company, but now he is trained to break into rooms full of smoke and heat and come up with a rescue strategy.
“I wanted a job where I could be active, work with my hands, learn new practical skills, and face different challenges every day,” That’s quite an understatement (保守说法) to describe a career that requires you to keep a cool head while fighting against a fire. But Telfer says that flames (火焰) and nerves can be controlled in the same way: through continuous physical and mental training.
Telfer was a runner in college, but now he trains his lungs for dangerous situations instead of races. He has to climb hundreds of steps while wearing 34 kilograms of gear, like oxygen tanks. He also needs to carry unconscious people to safety. No matter what he’s doing, he has to control his breathing. Panic (恐慌) will only waste his limited air supply.
His survival depends on more than just being physically fit. Firefighters need a lot of mental preparation too. When they are not dealing with emergencies, they study many subjects like emergency medicine, structural design, and chemical reactions. They practice quickly assessing (评估) the changing conditions of a fire.
Shifting from a software expert to a first responder was a big change for Telfer. But he says, “I have never once felt that this isn’t the right job for me.” Even though danger might be waiting every day, his body and mind are trained to stay calm, even in the middle of a fierce fire.
55.Firefighters have to get ready within sixty seconds after hearing the alarm, don’t they
56.When did Sam Telfer become a firefighter

“Everything is for the health of the students, and we support the new measure.” said Liu. Like other nonprofessional (非专业的) PE teachers, Liu took PE training classes and found chances to learn from professional PE teachers.
Chen Xinru, a grade 8 student from Xin’an Middle School, said that a daily PE class has many advantages and helps her a lot. “When I am tired, I can relax by running or playing basketball and I can become more focused in class,” said Chen.

After nearly four hundred years, these sculptures are still intact (完好的) and look brand new.
It is known as the “Museum of Hanging Sculpture Art in China”. Its unique artistic value and connection with the popular game have made the Xiaoxitian scenic area attract a large number of tourists. But because of the rope he used, his first Guinness application was considered invalid (无效). After online communication with the records management team, Zhou quickly changed to a common rope recognized (认证) by the Guinness World Records. He soon got used to it.
Whatever kind of rope Zhou used, his strict training stood him in good sporting condition. Zhou has been in the school rope skipping team for seven years. He has jumped rope for about four hours each day. He would also run around the playground to improve his physical strength.

In his lovely piece of writing “Why Write ”, the writer Paul Auster shares a story about growing up as an eight-year-old in New York City. He was crazy about baseball, especially the New York Giants. The only thing he remembers about attending his first major league baseball game is that he saw his hero Willie Mays after the game. The young Auster gathered his courage and went close to his hero. “Mr. Mays,” he said, “could I please have your autograph (签名) ”
“Sure, kid, sure,” Mays replied kindly. “Have you got a pencil ”
Auster didn’t have a pencil on him, neither did his father or his mother or anyone else in his group.
Mays waited patiently, but when it became clear that no one present had anything to write with, he said, “Sorry, kid. We’ve got no pencil. I can’t give you my autograph.”
From that day on, Auster made it a habit to never leave the house without a pencil in his pocket. “It’s not that I had any special plans for that pencil,” Auster writes, “but I didn’t want to be unprepared. I had been caught empty-handed once, and I wasn’t about to let it happen again. The years have taught me this: If there’s a pencil in your pocket, there’s a good chance that one day you’ll feel like starting to use it. That’s how I became a writer.”

Spotted seals are nationally protected animals in China. They are the only kind of seals that can breed (繁殖) in Chinese waters. Like migratory (迁徙的) birds, they appear around October every year in Liaodong Bay, and take the long journey back to the Northwest Pacific in May after breeding. They are often considered as the “panda of the sea”.
Thanks to China’s top-class national protection in recent years, the population of spotted seals in Chinese waters has reached around 2,000, while the global population is between 400,000 and 600,000. Studies have shown that these 2,000 spotted seals are of great importance for the study and research on spotted seals.
To protect this rare animal and its ecological environment, the Liaoning Dalian Spotted Seal Wetlands were set up in 1992. In January 2002, they were included in the List of Wetlands of International Importance. Covering an area of 560,000 hectares with a coastline of about 370 kilometers, the wetlands are rich in biological resources. They have become home to nationally protected animals such as the spotted seal, finless porpoise, killer whales, false killer whales, common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, and East Asian river dolphins.
Since 1992, researchers in Dalian have successfully saved 388 spotted seals and put 299 of them back into the wild.

Life is like water
There was a man who couldn’t achieve his ambition. So he was recommended to visit a sage (圣人).
The sage silently scooped up the water and asked, “What is the shape of the water ” The sage poured the water into a glass before the man could answer. The man answered, “I know water is like a glass.” The sage said nothing and poured the water into the vase nearby. The man realized it, “I know water is like a vase.” The sage shook his head, gently carried the vase in both hands and poured the water into a pot filled with sand. The clear water disappeared into the sand.
The sage said, “Look, the water died away like this. This is a lifetime!”
The man said happily, “I know you want to tell me that the society is like various containers. So people should be like water. When you are in a certain container, you will become its shape and nothing can change!”
“Yes and no,” the sage said. The sage went out of the house, followed by the man. Under the eaves (屋檐), the sage bent over, touched the flagstone steps for a while and stopped. The man reached out his hand to where the sage had just touched and felt a concave (凹面), but he didn’t know what secret the concave in the flagstone steps hid.

A total of 23 spotted seals (斑海豹) were put back into the waters off the coast of Dalian in Northeast China’s Liaoning Province on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2023 as part of China’s continuous efforts to protect endangered wildlife.
The seals were hunted and sold, but have now been saved and marked for future protection. A fishery law enforcement ship arrived at the sea area near Dalian in the morning, carrying the spotted seals. The seals were let go free one by one into the sea. They swam freely in the water, returning to their natural home.
