One day, a poor farmer was taking a bag of rice to town. Suddenly the bag fell off his horse on
the road. He didn’t know what to do about it because it was too heavy for him to lift by himself. He
only hoped that somebody would soon pass by and help him.
Just at this moment a man riding a horse came up to him. But the farmer was very disappointed

Electronic waste (e-waste) comes from computers, cameras, phones, fridges, TVs and so on.
How much e-waste has been produced
There is too much e-waste on the earth. In the past ten years, 506. 5 Mt of e-waste has been

What can we do with e-waste

Artist Thomas Deininger uses rubbish to create bird sculptures(雕塑) . When you watch his
sculptures from one angle(角度), they appear to be real birds. However, when you change your
angle, you realize that they are made from different kinds of rubbish. His art sends an important
message about the environment.
To create his art, Deininger spends a lot of time looking for old things. On the rubbish collection
(收集)day, he looks for waste in his neighborhood in Tiverton, a town in the US. He also visits
parking lots and joins in beach cleanups. "I’m always picking up things," he says.
But that’s just the first step. It takes Deininger about a week to complete 90 percent of a
sculpture, and then it can take up to four more weeks to make the final improvements.
Deininger’s care for waste began 30 years ago. When he traveled to the islands (岛) in the
South Pacific, he saw waste washed up on the beaches. He was very concerned about the
environment and decided to do something to help stop people from polluting the earth. He realized
that his art could be a great way. Finally, he began using rubbish to create art for a meaningful reason.
In his artwork, Deininger shows birds that are now in danger. By showing the beauty of these
birds made from waste, he hopes that more people can care about our planet and take action to cut

Long time ago, people from other cultures used their hands to eat food, while the ancient
Chinese invented chopsticks to keep their hands clean. Early chopsticks were used mainly for
cooking until 400 A. D. when people began eating with chopsticks.
We don’t know exactly when chopsticks were invented. There’s a research showing that they
didn’t come into wide use until about 300 B. C. Chinese thinker Confucius (孔子) was an important
person in the history of chopsticks, because he thought peace would not appear if people used knives
