W: Hello Benjamin, Dan and I will be going for a run along the canal this Saturday morning. Would you like to join us
M: I’d love to, Daisy, but I hurt my ankle last weekend while playing football with work colleagues.
W: Oh dear, is it serious
M: No, not at all. I landed badly during a fall and twisted it a little, but it’s not a big deal. It’s just a little swollen and I should be fine for next Saturday if you still want to go for a jog then.
W: I won’t be here next Saturday. I’m going to the zoo.
M: The zoo
W: Yeah. My little nephew has just turned six, and he loves the zoo. So the whole family is going there.
M: Oh, okay then. I haven’t been to a zoo since I was a kid.
W: They are nowhere near as popular as they used to be when we were children. I personally feel sorry for the poor animals stuck in the cages. But there’s no denying they are fun and educational for children.
M: Do you know if Dan will be around next Saturday
W: Yeah, I think he will. Just send him a text message. He’s always keen on physical activities.
M: That’s true. Dan is extremely fit and healthy. He goes to the gym most days, plus playing tennis two or three times a week.
W: So, what have you been doing to stay busy while you’ve had that swollen ankle
M: I’ve been catching up on some reading. I was given three books over Christmas, and I’m only now getting around to reading them.

“Sleep is of the dead”. “Sleep is a criminal waste of time”. That’s not me talking. That’s two famous people, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Edison. But tonight we have an equally well-known person who disagrees with such ideas. He is Russell Foster. He’s one of this country’s leading scientists in sleep studies and the free-thinking lecturer of the year. Russell is a man who thinks deeply and sleeps deeply, and he wants us to stop seeing sleep as an inconvenience, something to be gotten through. He’s a man who wants us to take sleep as the most important behavioral experience that we have. Russell has been doing this research for decades at the University of Virginia, Chicago, and now at Oxford. But his work also takes him beyond the lab. Through videos and popular books, Russell has become a public speaker for sleep. And tonight’s lecture is about his research. Please welcome Russell Foster.

In Fujian Province, traditional stone houses offer insights into urban evolution and regional culture. Among all the stone houses in Fujian, one that particularly stands out is located in Shamei Village of Xiang an District in Xiamen.
Once deserted, it has been turned into a restaurant called Yellow Stone House by Felix Kraemer, a German graphic designer—who is also the chef. The transformation process presented countless difficulties; however, Kraemer tends to embrace such challenges. For him, new problems also present new learning opportunities.
The identities of a designer and a chef may appear at odds, yet Kraemer sees the two professions as highly related. “Both graphic design and cooking are an exercise in creativity,” he explained. It is the creative process that he values.
When he first arrived in Xiamen, he taught graphic design at Xiamen University. Later, he was attracted by the quiet environment and distinctive traditional Minnan (southern Fujian) buildings, and decided to open a restaurant to pursue the quiet life he longed for.
A western restaurant in a tiny village Are there any customers Can the business survive These are the questions people commonly ask after hearing about Yellow Stone House.
From simple sandwiches and salads to hot dishes, from traditional German food to fusion cuisine, from the basic menu to seasonal specials, Kraemer is always trying and learning. “Over time, an increasing number of guests have arrived, and many regular customers have become our friends. I hope this space will serve as a ‘home away from home’ for all guests, and this idea is becoming a reality,” Kraemer said.
Now, Yellow Stone House has evolved into a popular gathering spot for international students at Xiamen University, not only due to its hearty cuisine but also owing to the warm and welcoming behavior of its owner.

Oliver Hauser, an economist at the University of Exeter in the U.K. who studies artificial intelligence, wanted to try answering the basic question of whether AI could increase creativity. “It does have a sort of incredible ability to come up with content at the click of a button,” he says. “However, AI can often produce stories that are similar in nature.”
To try and get some hard data on the question of creativity, Hauser teamed up with Anil Doshi at the School of Management, University College London. They recruited (招募)nearly 300 people, who were not identified as professional writers. “We asked them to write a short, eight-sentence story,” he says. Around one-third of the writers had to come up with ideas on their own, while others were given starter ideas generated by the chatbot ChatGPT (powered by GPT-4o). Those who got help were divided into two subgroups: one that got a single AI-generated idea, and the other that got to choose from up to five. Above all, Doshi says, both the human only and AI-assisted groups had to write the stories themselves.
PART.02 阅读
Their writings were judged by a group of 600 evaluators who were asked to grade each story based on its “novelty” and “usefulness”. The results found that stories written with AI’s help were considered both more novel and useful. Writers who had access to one AI idea did better, but those who had access to five ideas saw the biggest boost—they wrote stories seen as around 8% more novel than human writings with their own ideas, and 9% more useful.
So AI really does appear to make people more creative. But there’s a plot twist: When Hauser and Doshi looked at all the stories, they found a different effect. “Collectively speaking, there was a smaller diversity of novelty in the group that had AI,” Hauser says. In other words, the chatbot made each individual more creative, but it made the group that AI helped less creative. “We do worry that, on a large scale, if many people are using this… overall diversity and creativity in the population will go down,” he says.
PART.02 阅读
28.What is the limitation of AI in creativity according to Oliver Hauser
A.It reduces individual creativity.
B.It often generates similar stories.
C.It requires professional instruction.
D.It can hardly produce original content.
29.What is the second paragraph mainly about
A.Findings of the writing experiment.

31. C 【深度解析】推理判断题。根据第四段中豪泽说的话“Collectively speaking, there was a smaller diversity of novelty in the group that had AI,”和“We do worry that, on a large scale, if many people are using this… overall diversity and creativity in the population will go down,”可知,研究证实,从整体角度看,有AI协助的团体创造性和多样性会减少,大规模使用AI会使得整体创造性和多样性降低。由此可推知,豪泽对该研究发现的态度是担忧的。故选C项。

Does this situation sound familiar A colleague approaches and asks, “Hey, what are you up to this weekend ” You tell her you’re not sure, but nothing big. She replies with her own vivid plans. “I’m going to my lake house, and we’re having a massive bonfire.”
What seems like a genuine expression of interest in you suddenly shifts and becomes a chance for your colleague to complain or share herself. I call this strategy “boomerasking”, and it happens constantly. Studies show that between 40% and 60% of conversational speech is ego-related, with this percentage even higher on social media, reaching up to 80%.
While we often show interest in others by asking questions or acknowledging their viewpoints, egocentrism(自我中心主义)makes it difficult to maintain this focus. Humans naturally focus on themselves. Also, sharing personal information can signal trust and shape others’ impressions of us, helping us seem interesting, confident, and likable.
PART.02 阅读
However, too much self-centered talk can damage a conversation. So many people try to balance their self-centeredness by using indirect methods, like pretending to be modest, mentioning important people, or giving mixed praise. But among all the ways we attempt to mask(掩饰)our self-centeredness, boomerasking might be the worst—as it takes away the great benefits that come from asking questions.
Asking sincere questions, listening to others‘answers and following up on those answers may be the easiest and most powerful pathway to shared understanding and interpersonal connection. Boomerasking ruins the magic. Failing to follow up on your partner’s answer and answering the question yourself instead make others feel like you probably don’t care about them when you ask the question to begin the chat.
Next time you ask someone about their plans, make it about them. Listen, follow up with genuine curiosity, and resist the urge to turn the conversation back to yourself immediately. By doing so, you’ll strengthen connections and build more meaningful relationships.

A.Listening carefully to others before responding.
B.Complaining constantly while talking about oneself.

33.Why do people share personal information in conversations

How to Build a Positive Mindset
A positive mindset is a powerful tool, aiding in facing challenges with confidence, enhancing happiness, and creating a fulfilling life. Though it doesn’t remove difficulties, it equips individuals with resilience(韧性)and optimism. 36 Every small change in daily habits can lead you to create big differences over time. Using the following tips, you can gradually shift your perspective, approaching life with greater confidence and joy.
Focus on gratitude. 37 Writing journals deepens this practice, aiding in appreciating moments later. Small things, like a sunny day or a friend’s smile, can shift your perspective. This habit trains your brain to notice goodness in life, even during tough times.
Replace negative thoughts. When negative thoughts arise, pause them and prevent them from developing further. Replace them with constructive alternatives consciously. For example, reframe “I’ll never succeed” to “I can learn and improve”. 38
Surround yourself with positivity. The people and environments you engage with influence your mindset. Spend time with those who encourage and inspire you. 39 Minimize exposure to negative influences, like pessimistic social media content or unhealthy relationships.
40 Progress is achieved step by step. Be proud of your daily accomplishments, even if they are small. Don’t compare your journey to others’; everyone grows at their own pace. Just acknowledging these wins boosts your motivation and reinforces the sense of achievement. Celebrating small victories reminds you that every effort counts, keeping you moving forward.

Dear Chris,
I’m excited to share with you that my “balcony vegetable garden” has had a good harvest this year.
It all started with a few pots, seeds, and organic fertilizer. I planted tomatoes and peppers. Watering them daily, protecting the plants from pests, and adjusting their positions for sunlight became part of my routine. To my delight, the tomatoes turned red, and the peppers grew well—all ready for harvest last week! This experience taught me the joy of planting and the value of patience. Even a small balcony can connect us to nature. Challenging though it was at times, seeing the fruits of my own labor was incredibly rewarding.
Have you ever tried growing your own food I’d love to hear your thoughts!

PART.04 写作
The morning air was cool as climbers walked up the mountain trail (小路). Excitement filled the group, their laughter echoing through the trees. Among them, Mike and his three closest friends—Ali, Jack, and Henry—were determined to be the first to reach the top.
After a long and tiring climb, they finally stood at the summit. A breathtaking view stretched before them—rolling green hills fading into the horizon, a sparkling river winding (蜿蜒) through the valley below, and clouds moving slowly across the vast blue sky. The boys stood in amazement, letting the cool breeze brush against their faces. “This is amazing,” Mike whispered, unable to take his eyes off the view.
They spent some time enjoying the peaceful moment, taking pictures, and sharing snacks. However, as the afternoon sun began its slow descent (下降), Mike called out, “Time to head back down before it gets too late!”
Reluctantly (勉强地), the group began their descent. The trail was steep, but the boys moved quickly—until something caught their attention. Along the path were strange and beautiful stones, each with its unique shape and pattern. “Look at this one! It’s shaped like a star!” Jack exclaimed, holding a small, smooth stone.
“This one looks like a dinosaur tooth!” Henry added, putting it into his pocket.
Fascinated, the boys started searching for more. They picked up stones of different colors, comparing their finds and laughing at the funny shapes. Time slipped by unnoticed as they wandered along the trail, filling their backpacks with their treasures.
It wasn’t until Tom looked up that they realized it was too late. Worse still, at some point, dark clouds gathered, and a gust of wind blew through, making the trees rustle (沙沙作响). In an instant, light rain began to fall from the sky.
“It’s starting to rain!” Ali complained.
Mike frowned, adjusting to the weight of his stone-filled backpack.“We need to hurry up before the rain gets heavier,” he said.

PART.04 写作
【参考范文】
They hiked down well and fast, but suddenly Mike slipped and hurt his ankle. They had to stop because Mike’s left ankle swelled up and it hurt a lot when he put his left foot on the ground. It was just then that the rain got heavier, and their limbs were numb with cold. To make matters worse, the dim light made it hard for them to recognize the trail, which would increase the danger if they continued. A wave of fear and anxiety swept over the boys. “What should we do ” Mike cried out in a trembling voice.
After some thought, Ali came up with an idea. He put Mike on his back with Henry keeping them balanced beside them and Jack leading the way. And they took turns to carry Mike if one felt tired. The cold rain was pounding on them, and sweat dripped down their cheeks, but they dared not stop because they were fully aware that the later it got, the more challenges and dangers they might meet. They were racing against time! They took every step cautiously, and finally they reached the bottom of the mountain safely.

Dear Chris,
I’m excited to share with you that my “balcony vegetable garden” has had a good harvest this year.

daily, protecting the plants from pests, and adjusting their positions for sunlight became part of my routine. To
my delight, the tomatoes turned red, and the peppers grew well—all ready for harvest last week! This experience
taught me the joy of planting and the value of patience. Even a small balcony can connect us to nature.
Challenging though it was at times, seeing the fruits of my own labor was incredibly rewarding.
Have you ever tried growing your own food I’d love to hear your thoughts!
Yours,
Li Hua

【参考范文】
They hiked down well and fast, but suddenly Mike slipped and hurt his ankle. They had to stop because
Mike’s left ankle swelled up and it hurt a lot when he put his left foot on the ground. It was just then that the rain
got heavier, and their limbs were numb with cold. To make matters worse, the dim light made it hard for them to
recognize the trail, which would increase the danger if they continued. A wave of fear and anxiety swept over the
boys. “What should we do ” Mike cried out in a trembling voice.
After some thought, Ali came up with an idea. He put Mike on his back with Henry keeping them balanced
beside them and Jack leading the way. And they took turns to carry Mike if one felt tired. The cold rain was
pounding on them, and sweat dripped down their cheeks, but they dared not stop because they were fully aware
that the later it got, the more challenges and dangers they might meet. They were racing against time! They took
every step cautiously, and finally they reached the bottom of the mountain safely.

Text 1
W: Peter, are you going hiking with your friends this weekend
M: It depends. If it’s sunny, we might go.
W: The weatherman says it’s going to snow a little.
M: Well, in that case, we’ll go to the theater instead.
Text 2
W: Hello, Mike, guess who I came across at the airport Andy Smith—a very handsome pilot that I read about in
the book American Pilots.
M: What was he doing I know little about him.
Text 3
M: Amanda, what’s in the mailbox
W: It’s a thank-you note from Mary. She thanked us for visiting her last weekend after she gave birth to little
Jenny. She’s also writing to invite us to Sunday’s lunch.
M: Oh, cool. We are going then.
Text 4
W: Hi, Jim. How’s your new job
M: It’s very challenging. But I am learning a great deal from it. I really want to have a good break this weekend.
Text 5
M: I have been spending some time reading and understanding the painting Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci.
W: It’s said that Mona Lisa is an Italian businessman’s wife. This widely-known painting has indeed attracted

lots of people to study it.
Text 6
M: I am starving. What are we having for dinner, my dear
W: Not quite sure. I’ll have a think.
M: I feel like having some Chinese takeaway food or maybe a ham sandwich. What about you
W: Actually, I also wanna eat some Chinese food. We haven’t had it for weeks.
M: Well, good that you think the same.
Text 7
W: Hi, Alan, I’ve made up my mind to leave the company. I have had an amazing time here, but it’s time for me
to do something new.
M: May I ask why, Kate I do hope you can stay here with us.
W: To tell you the truth, I’ve got a new job in a big computer company. It’s a management position.
M: Well, congratulations. This position really fits you because management used to be your major.
W: Thanks, Alan. I am leaving in two weeks. Before I go, let’s have dinner someday.
M: I am happy to have dinner with you. But are you still able to finish your present project
W: Sure. And if you hire someone within ten days, I’d like to help to train them.
Text 8
W: Hello Benjamin, Dan and I will be going for a run along the canal this Saturday morning. Would you like to
join us
M: I’d love to, Daisy, but I hurt my ankle last weekend while playing football with work colleagues.
W: Oh dear, is it serious
M: No, not at all. I landed badly during a fall and twisted it a little, but it’s not a big deal. It’s just a little swollen
and I should be fine for next Saturday if you still want to go for a jog then.
I personally feel sorry for the
poor animals stuck in the cages. But there’s no denying they are fun and educational for children.
M: Do you know if Dan will be around next Saturday
W: Yeah, I think he will. Just send him a text message. He’s always keen on physical activities.
M: That’s true. Dan is extremely fit and healthy. He goes to the gym most days, plus playing tennis two or three
times a week.
W: So, what have you been doing to stay busy while you’ve had that swollen ankle
M: I’ve been catching up on some reading. I was given three books over Christmas, and I’m only now getting
around to reading them.

W: It’s a pretty good conference, isn’t it
M: Yeah. All the speakers are well-known and knowledgeable in the subject matter. Did you listen to Micheal
Miller’s speech on how to avoid business risks this morning
W: No, I missed that one. I went to a speech at Alan Brown Hall. The speaker was David Thompson.
M: Oh, that should be a good one, too. I attended his lecture last year. By the way, there will be a workshop this
afternoon on how to motivate employees. Are you interested
W: Sure. I was promoted to the position of manager a few months ago. And I have to manage a staff of 22 people.
It can be quite a difficult situation sometimes. That’s why I am here today.
M: Same here. I only have six people reporting to me. Yet sometimes I feel like I’m pulling my hair out. I need to
find a way to create harmony within my department.
Text 10
“Sleep is of the dead”. “Sleep is a criminal waste of time”. That’s not me talking. That’s two famous people,
Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Edison. But tonight we have an equally well-known person who disagrees with
such ideas. He is Russell Foster. He’s one of this country’s leading scientists in sleep studies and the
free-thinking lecturer of the year. Russell is a man who thinks deeply and sleeps deeply, and he wants us to stop
seeing sleep as an inconvenience, something to be gotten through. He’s a man who wants us to take sleep as the
most important behavioral experience that we have. Russell has been doing this research for decades at the
University of Virginia, Chicago, and now at Oxford. But his work also takes him beyond the lab. Through videos
and popular books, Russell has become a public speaker for sleep. And tonight’s lecture is about his research.
Please welcome Russell Foster.
