When living or travelling internationally, we notice the differences between cultures before seeing the similarities. At first, some differences are easy to spot. Over time, however, there are some curious similarities between how people in the UK and China communicate. Indeed, international residents in both countries often complain about having to read what local people really mean, because it often differs from what is said.
In the UK, outsiders often get confused when they realise that a person making rude comments was actually showing love. In situations like this, context is everything. Likewise, in China, outsiders must infer most meaning from context and from what is not said, rather than from what is. Otherwise, misunderstandings happen.
The UK and China contexts share further cultural features, which greatly influence how people communicate, including the cultural trait (特点) of non-conflict. The British will do everything to avoid conflict. They will probably tell the waiter it was lovely even when served with poor quality food. This cultural trait can cause major misunderstandings. For example, a British business partner who is deeply unhappy with your proposal will probably say “there are just a couple of small concerns,” rather than telling you that the entire proposal is unsatisfactory.
Chinese communication shows a very similar conflict prevention. Often challenges, errors, mistakes, or problems remain completely taboos (禁忌) as topics of discussion, even though everyone knows of their existence. Instead, people talk about working towards further goals or objectives, rather than directly admit that the current situation is far from satisfactory. Likewise, Chinese people like to keep a sense of harmony within all environments, and so avoid open criticism of each other. This is very similar to the way that a British person might tell you a colleague “is very confident” rather than that they are rude. In this sense, the British and Chinese can appreciate each other for harmony.
24.What does the author suggest in Paragraph 2
A.Polite comments are encouraged. B.Learning what is not said is difficult.
C.Context is important in communication. D.Misunderstandings often happen among outsiders.
25.What will the British and the Chinese probably both agree with
A.Talking over taboos in discussions.
B.Preventing misunderstandings in work.
C.Avoiding discussing one’s mistakes in public.
D.Making use of cultural traits in communication.
26.How does the author develop this passage
A.By using figures. B.By making comparison.
C.By listing reasons. D.By making classifications.
27.Which of the following is the most suitable title for the passage
A.Cultural Differences Between the UK and China
B.Avoiding Conflict: British Communication Styles
C.The Importance of Context in Chinese Communication
D.Shared Cultural Characters in Communication: UK and China

Cultural heritage is a treasure that connects us to our past, but preserving it is not always easy. Many historical buildings, and artworks are at risk of damage because of natural disasters, pollution, or simply the passage of time. Fortunately, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is now playing a key role in protecting and restoring these precious pieces of history.
One way AI helps is through digital restoration. For example, ancient paintings or sculptures that have been damaged over time can be scanned and analyzed by AI algorithms (算法). These algorithms can then recreate missing parts or colors, allowing experts to see what the artwork might have looked like centuries ago. In 2021, AI was used to restore a famous painting by Rembrandt, bringing its original beauty back to life.
AI is also used to monitor the condition of cultural sites. Sensors and cameras can be placed in museums or historical buildings to collect data on temperature, humidity (湿度), and light levels. AI systems analyze this data to detect any changes that could harm the artwork. If a problem is found, experts can take action before it’s too late.
Another exciting application of AI is in virtual reconstruction. Some historical sites have been destroyed by wars or natural disasters, but with AI, we can recreate them in virtual reality (VR). For example, AI has been used to rebuild the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria, which was severely damaged during the conflict. People can now explore this lost city through VR, learning about its history and culture.
However, there are challenges to using AI in cultural preservation. One concern is the cost of developing and maintaining these technologies. Another is the need for skilled professionals who can work with both AI and cultural heritage. Despite these challenges, it is believed that AI will continue to be a powerful tool in protecting our shared history for future generations.
28.Why are many historical artworks in danger of damage
A.Because of the lack of AI technology.
B.Owing to the incorrect use of restoration methods.
C.Due to natural disasters, pollution or the passage of time.
D.Because there are not enough museums to display them.
29.According to paragraph 3, which of the following statements is true
A.Only cameras are used to collect data.
B.AI systems can directly fix the problems found.
C.The data collected is mainly about the appearance of artworks.
D.AI systems collects and analyzes data to detect potential risks.
30.What is the author’s attitude towards the future of AI in cultural heritage preservation
A.Doubtful. B.Cautious. C.Optimistic. D.Unconcerned.
31.What is the main purpose of the passage
A.To explain how AI is used in modern art creation.
B.To describe how AI is helping to protect and restore cultural heritage.
C.To discuss the challenges of preserving cultural heritage without technology.
D.To argue that AI is more important than human experts in cultural preservation.

‘According to the results of Harvard University’s latest international survey, the Chinese public’s satisfaction with the CPC exceeds 90 per cent.’ On 12 July, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying tweeted a strong rebuttal to U. S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s slanderous remarks about the CPC, citing a new Harvard University survey report as strong evidence.
The report is Understanding CCP Resilience: A Long-Term Survey of Public Opinion in China, released in July 2020 by the Ashe Center for Democratic Governance (民主治理) and Innovation at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.
The 18-page report was authored by three Kennedy School experts who wrote the survey after conducting eight surveys in China between 2003 and 2016, with face-to-face conversations with more than 31,000 urban and rural Chinese residents to track Chinese citizens’ satisfaction with Chinese government at all levels over time. The report concludes that Chinese people’s satisfaction with the government has risen almost across the board since 2003, especially among those in inland and impoverished areas.
The survey report shows that from 2003 to 2016, the Chinese people’s satisfaction with the government at the central, provincial (municipality directly under the central government), city, county and township levels has increased. in 2016, the Chinese people’s satisfaction with the central government was as high as 93.1 per cent, and the people’s satisfaction with the other three levels of government exceeded 70 per cent, while the satisfaction with the government at the provincial (municipality directly under the central government), city, county and township levels was 81.7 percent, respectively, 73.9% and 70.2% respectively. Overall, the higher the level of government, the higher the level of public satisfaction. In addition, in terms of the increase in satisfaction, the township government has seen the most significant increase in public satisfaction, from 43.6% in 2003 to 70.2%.
Concluding the report, the researchers note that by 2016, the Chinese government was more popular than at any time in the past 20 years. On average, the Chinese government provides much better and fairer healthcare, social welfare and other basic public services than it did when the survey began in 2003. Moreover, when it comes to corruption, the decline in satisfaction from 2009 to 2011 has been completely reversed. The public seems to be generally in favour of the anti-corruption campaign. On the environment, even though many residents expressed dissatisfaction, most respondents expect the situation to improve in the coming years.
As Hua Chunying said at the foreign ministry’s regular press conference, “The report concludes that the CPC’s ruling foundation is solid, and its resilience stems from the broad support of the public. According to this survey report, the Chinese people’s satisfaction rate with the Chinese government is higher than at any time in the past few decades, and they generally believe that the Chinese government’s ability and efficiency (效率) in governing is greater than at any time in the past, and in fact the Chinese people’s satisfaction rate with the central government is over 93 per cent. I think that such a high approval rating (支持率) is probably something that those politicians in the United States are incredibly envious of but can’t reach. This in itself is actually the best and most powerful response to the vicious attacks on the Chinese Communist Party by individual politicians such as Pompeo.”
32.What is the theme of the Harvard University survey report
A.The comparison of public services in different countries.
B.The change of the Chinese public’s attitude towards environmental protection.
C.Understanding CCP Resilience: A Long-Term Survey of Public Opinion in China.
D.The evaluation of the anti-corruption campaign in China.
33.What can be inferred from the fact that the Chinese public’s satisfaction with the government has risen
A.The U. S. politicians will change their attitude towards China.
B.The Chinese government has made remarkable achievements in various fields.
C.The Harvard survey report will be widely recognized by all countries.
D.The Chinese people are more concerned about international affairs.
34.What is the main purpose of this passage
A.To introduce the content and findings of a Harvard University survey report on the Chinese public’s satisfaction with the CPC and the government.
B.To show the differences between the Chinese and American political systems.
C.To analyze the reasons for the success of the anti-corruption campaign in China.
D.To respond to the slanderous remarks of U. S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
35.What does the underlined word “rebuttal” in the first paragraph probably mean
A.Support. B.Approval. C.Refutation. D.Analysis.

Animals have their own unique ways of communicating, which play an important role in their survival and social interactions. The communication signals are various and have developed over countless generations, finely adjusted to meet their specific needs. 36
One common form of animal communication is through vocalizations. Birds are masters of this. For example, the melodious songs of nightingales aren’t just for our enjoyment. Males sing to mark their territory, warning other males to stay away. 37 The more powerful the song is, the more likely the female is to mate.
38 Wolves use a complex system of body postures. When a wolf holds its tail high and stiff, it shows its power in its group. In contrast, a relaxed, loosely wagging tail indicates a friendly mood. Submissive wolves, on the other hand, will lower their bodies, tuck their tails, and avoid direct eye contact, communicating their non-threatening status.
Chemical signals, often in the form of pheromones (信息素), are widely used too. Ants release pheromones along its way to lead fellow ants to food sources. 39 Female moths can detect the pheromones of male moths from miles away, enabling them to find each other for mating.
Some animals even use visual displays. Peacocks (孔雀) spread their beautiful tails in a dazzling fan. This isn’t just for show; it’s a way to attract peahens during the breeding season. 40 The more brilliant the display is, the more likely they are to catch a female’s eye and pass on their genes.
In conclusion, the animal kingdom’s communication systems are a wonder of nature. Understanding these communication methods gives us a fascinating peek into the animal kingdom’s hidden social lives.
A.People recognize the signals suggesting changes.
B.It’s like a map guiding them to find the destination.
C.A wagging tail can mean friendliness or excitement.
D.And another purpose is to catch the attention of a female.
E.Body language is also an important way to communicate.
F.The bright colors and patterns show good health and genetic quality.
G.By understanding these signals, we can appreciate the animal world more easily.

I still remember that day in high school clearly. It was a math class, and Mr. Smith, our strict yet dedicated teacher, was writing complex equations (方程式) on the blackboard. The problem he presented was extremely challenging.
Most of my classmates were already scratching their heads, trying to work the puzzle out. I, the best student of our class, was concentrating hard, my pen moving swiftly across my notebook as I attempted to work through the problem. Suddenly, I noticed Grace, my deskmate, looking extremely frustrated. She was frowning deeply, her eyes darting back and forth between the blackboard and her paper, clearly struggling to understand.
I felt a pang of sympathy for her. We had been friends since the first year of high school, and I knew how important it was for her to keep up with the math classes as she was aiming for a top score in the upcoming exam. Without hesitation, I leaned over and whispered, “Hey, Grace. Are you okay This problem is quite tricky, but I think I might have some ideas.”
Grace looked up at me, her face showing a glimmer of hope. “I really don’t get it. I’ve tried every method I can think of, but I just can’t seem to figure it out,” she said disappointedly.
“Let’s take a look together,” I said with a firm smile starting to explain the steps slowly and carefully. I used different colors to highlight the key points, hoping it would make it easier for her to understand. We went through each part of the problem, discussing possible solutions.
As we worked, I could see the confusion gradually fading from Grace’s face. Her eyes lit up when she finally grasped the concept, and she exclaimed, “Oh, I get it now! Thank you so much!” Her gratitude filled my heart with a sense of satisfaction.
Paragraph 1:
However, just as we were about to finish, Mr. Smith suddenly called out “Grace”.

I squeezed her hand encouragingly. “You can do it, Grace. Just trust yourself.” Grace took a deep breath and walked to the front of the class.
