Many kids help parents to do chores (家务活) in the house. They may take out the rubbish, walk the dog or
sweep the floor. In return, some kids get money or other rewards (报酬) from their parents, such as 20 minutes to
play computer games.
But some people do not think that kids should get rewards’ for doing chores. One of them is Jane Smith, a
parenting educator and family coach. She believes if kids get rewards, they may think that work isn’t worth (值得)
doing unless they get something in return. For example, kids won’t sweep the floor if they see it is dirty. But they
will do it if their parents reward them for it.
“Every house is a team effort (努力),” Jane said. “A home is a living place for everyone in the family. It’s
第 5页/共 15页
important for kids to see that we all have a responsibility (责任) to keep our home clean.”
Other people hold different opinions. They believe that money or other rewards encourage kids to do more
chores. It also teaches them real world lessons. They can learn about how we need to work to make money.
Now, there are also apps that encourage kids to do chores. The apps give kids points and digital (电子的) gifts
that can be used either online or in life. With the app ChoreMonster, kids earn (赚得) digital points after doing
chores. Kids can use their points to get real rewards, such as time to play video games or a trip to the mall. “Our
goal is to encourage kids so they can earn rewards,” says Joe Black, the founder of ChoreMonster. “Kids need
positive (积极的) power to make them do chores.”
25 Jane Smith thinks that ________.
A. kids shouldn’t get rewards for doing chores
B. kids don’t want to do chores
C. kids should get money from doing chores
26. ChoreMonster is a(n) ________.
A. educator B. coach C. app
27. What’s the purpose of the app ChoreMonster mentioned (被提及) in the passage
A. To give kids points and gifts.
B. To encourage kids to do chores.
C. To use points for real rewards.
28. The passage mainly talks about ________.
A. how to encourage kids to do chores
B. what kind of chores kids should do
C. whether kids should be rewarded for doing chores

One day, while I was waiting for my father, I saw a little boy, around two years old, running freely on the
grass as his mother watched from a short distance. The boy had a big smile on his face as if he had just been set
第 6页/共 15页
free from some sort of prison (监狱) . The boy would then fall to the grass, get up, without looking back at his
mother, and run as fast as he could, again, still with a smile on his face, as if nothing had happened.
At that moment, I thought to myself, “Why aren’t most adults (成年人) this way ” Most adults, when they fall
down, make a big deal out of it and don’t even make a second attempt. They would be so embarrassed that they
would not try again if someone saw them fall. Or, because they fall, they would find a good excuse for themselves
that they’re not fit for it. They would end up being too afraid to attempt again for fear of failure (失败).
However, with kids, when they fall down, they don’t consider their falling down as a failure; instead, they
treat it as a learning experience. They try again and again until they succeed. The answer must be that they have not
connected “falling down” with the word “failure”. What’s more, they probably think to themselves that it’s quite
okay to fall down and that it’s not wrong to do so. In other words, they allow themselves to make mistakes, so they
remain energetic.
I was deeply impressed by the boy’s persistence (坚持不懈) and the manner in which he did.
29. What did the little boy do when he fell down
A. He cried and lay on the grass.
B. He asked his mother for help.
C. He got up and went on running.
30. In the writer’s opinion, why can’t many adults succeed
A. Because they are afraid of being embarrassed.
B. Because they can’t find a good excuse.
C. Because once they fail, they won’t attempt again.
31. The underlined word “attempt” in Paragraph 2 means “________” in Chinese.
A. 尝试 B. 放弃 C. 面对
32. What does the writer want to tell us
A. Practice makes perfect.
B. Failure is the mother of success.
C. All roads lead to Rome.

Have you had a pet Did it get sick or even die How did you feel about it Now let me share my story.
第 9页/共 15页
My family is always poor, but we are a close family. We love our pets above anything else. Last December,
things got even worse for our family because of the terrible snow. We went from just being poor to being homeless
and finally, we lost everything except for (除了) our two German shepherds(德国牧羊犬).
It was a cold winter, but luckily we found an old house where our two beautiful dogs could live with us.
Unluckily, all of our money was gone and our dog food was running out.
We called all over the town, trying to find someone to help. But nobody would give a hand. I was afraid that
our dogs would die because they didn’t eat anything for 3 days. I called one last place in town—a small pet food
shop.
There, a young girl answered the phone. I told her about what we were going through. Then, this sweet girl
told me that she would get the dog food for us for free.
Hearing this, I started crying. My fears went away. I knew that our dogs would have food, all because this
young girl paid for it out of her own pocket. She didn’t know me, but she would help my dogs.
This young girl, whose name I don’t even know, will always be an angel(天使) to me, and an angel to my
dogs as well.
