Marcel Proust, born on July 10,1871, in Auteuil, France, is one of the most celebrated writers of the 20th
century. Known for his monumental novel In Search of Lost Time, Proust’s work explores themes of memory, time,
and human experience with unparalleled depth.
Proust grew up in a wealthy family, but his childhood was marked by poor health. He suffered from asthma,
which often kept him indoors, isolating him from other children. Despite this, he developed a love for literature and
writing at an early age. His mother, with whom he shared a close bond, encouraged his intellectual pursuits,
fostering his passion for storytelling. As a young man, Proust immersed himself in Parisian high society by
attending salons, where Proust observed the interactions and exchanges among the upper class and formed
friendships with artists and writers. These experiences later influenced his writing, providing him with sufficient
material for his literary work. However, Proust struggled to find his literary voice in his early years. His first
attempts at writing, including a collection of essays and short stories, received little attention.
Everything changed in 1909, when Proust began working on In Search of Lost Time. This seven-volume novel,
which took over a decade to complete, is considered his masterpiece. It is filled with detailed descriptions of social
events, noble circles, and the complexities of human relationships. The famous opening scene, where the taste of a
Madeleine cake triggers a flood of memories, captures the essence of Proust’s exploration of involuntary memory
— the idea that small sensory experiences can unlock forgotten moments from the past. Proust’s health continued
to decline as he worked on his novel. He spent his final years confined to his bedroom, writing tirelessly. He passed
away on November 18,1922, leaving behind a literary legacy that continues to inspire readers and writers alike.
Marcel Proust’s life reminds us that great art often arises from personal struggle and reflection. His ability to
capture the fleeting nature of time and memory has made In Search of Lost Time a timeless work, celebrated for its
beauty and insight into the human condition.
4. How did Proust’s experiences in Parisian high society impact his writing
A. They became a rich source of material for his writing.
B. They made him more interested in writing.
C. They offered him chances to befriend the upper class.
D. They helped him gain more confidence.
5. What can we know about the novel In Search of Lost Time
A. It was not well-received at first.
B. It was set in Paris and completed in 1922.
C. It described the kindness of human beings in detail.
第 4页/共 12页
D. It highlighted the function of sensory experiences.
6 Which of the following statements is TRUE
A. Proust spent an easy and carefree childhood.
B. Proust’s mother was indifferent to his intellectual pursuits.
C. Proust’s efforts and reflection shaped his literary masterpiece.
D. Proust’s work was about the relationship between nature and humans.
7. According to the whole text, how can we describe Marcel Proust
A. Generous. B. Insightful. C. Tolerant. D. Humorous.

Over 90% of patients needing organ transplants lack donors, while 240 million people suffer from rare genetic
diseases with limited treatment options. Also, poor diets contribute to 10 million premature deaths annually. But
now, there’s a ray of hope — CRISPR gene editing.
CRISPR is like a pair of super-accurate DNA “scissors”. It can change genes by removing harmful mutations
(突变) or adding useful ones. For example, there are clinical trials testing pig organs modified by CRISPR for
human organ transplants. Last year, a treatment using CRISPR was approved to treat blood diseases like sickle-cell
disease and beta-thalassemia, which affect millions of people. Ongoing research suggests a single CRISPR
treatment might provide lifelong protection against heart attacks. In agriculture, CRISPR may enhance crop yields,
improve climate resilience (弹 性 ) and create healthier foods, such as white bread with more fiber and tastier
mustard greens.
However, CRISPR also faces hindrances. Since its 2012 discovery, it has been gradually replacing older
gene-changing technologies. But it needs more investment and tests in reallife situations. Scientists have to find
cheap ways to use CRISPR in different kinds of cells and develop treatments for different genetic mutations.
Regulations are another issue. Current regulations for rare-disease drugs are overly restrictive, delaying access
to treatments. CRISPR can target many different mutations with one drug, but the high safety and production
standards make it costly. If the rules for small batch production are relaxed, it could speed up life-saving therapies,
which many seriously ill patients would welcome. The U. S. FDA has started to make some changes in this regard.
Agriculture policies also lag. Gene-edited crops, which modify plants’ existing genes and are unlike
genetically modified (GM) cross-species transfers, face outdated GM regulations in regions like the EU. The UK
aims to adopt progressive laws to address climate-related food insecurity, urging the EU to follow. But public doubt
第 5页/共 12页
and conflicting political ideas threaten progress. With the confirmation of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as health secretary,
America may move slowly, or even go into reverse. That would be a blow to progress and humanity.
8. What can be learned about CRISPR according to paragraph 2
A. It has been used widely in human organ transplants.
B. It can only be used to treat blood disorders.
C. It might offer long-term protection against heart attacks.
D. It has created fiber-rich white bread and delicious mustard greens.
9. What does the underlined word “hindrances” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Barriers. B. Advances. C. Inspirations. D. Threats.
10. Why are the regulations for rare-disease drugs a problem
A. They result in the high price of the drugs.
B. They are intended to delay patients’ access to treatments.
C. They make small-batch production impossible.
D. They are not strict enough in safety and production standards.
11. What does the author imply in the last paragraph
A. Gene-edited crops are the same as GM crops.
B. The EU has already adopted new laws for gene-edited crops.
C. Public doubt has little influence on CRISPR’s development.
D. CRISPR’s development might slow down in the U. S.

The idea that having kids can keep you young might have some scientific basis. A study of more than 37,000
adults has found that parenting can help keep the human brain fit as it ages. For each additional child that a mother
or father has, scientists found an increase in brain connectivity. This was especially true in regions of the central
nervous system associated with movement and sensation.
The authors of the study, led by cognitive neuroscientist (神经学家) Edwina Orchard at Yale University,
claim their research is the largest investigation of parental brain function to date, and the first to show differences in
males beyond early fatherhood. The findings, which come from the United Kingdom Biobank, suggest that despite
the exhaustion, stresses, and challenges of parenting, having kids may enrich a person’s life in the long run,
providing much-needed cognitive stimulation, physical activity, and social interaction.
“The caregiving environment, rather than pregnancy alone, appears important since we see these effects in
第 6页/共 12页
both mothers and fathers,” says psychiatrist Avram Holmes from Rutgers University. If that’s true, it’s possible that
the direct impact of caregiving could offer similar benefits to grandparents, childcare workers, or any other person
with a strong responsibility for children.
Fathers are often excluded from studies on parenthood because they don’t physically carry a pregnancy, give
birth, or breastfeed, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t profoundly affected by their new household role. Having
children has a life-changing impact on both the body and mind. Among first-time fathers, initial research suggests
having a child can lead to a loss of one or two percent of cortical volume. Because this shrinkage occurs in a region
associated with parental acceptance and warmth, researchers suspect it is the brain’s way of refining this network
for a new role in life.
Yet neuroscientists know little about the long-term brain effects of parenthood in either sex. Only recently
have studies shown the profound brain changes that occur during the parenthood. For both sexes, having kids was
positively correlated with functional connectivity, which refers to neural activation patterns within and between
brain networks. But what about after a baby has grown up
12. Who may benefit from having kids apart from parents
A. Scientists in neurology. B. Kindergarten teachers.
C. Brain specialists. D. Cleaners in hospitals.
13. What do we know about the fathers with a newly-born baby
A. They may find it difficult to accept their new identity.
B. They are deeply affected in both the body and mind.
C. They are tired from attending to their kids.
D. They may suffer from memory decline.
14. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Further study may focus on the later impact of parenthood.
B. Having a child can speed up the process of ageing.
C. First-time parents can’t adapt to their new roles.
D. How to raise children will be further explored in the following study.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Parenting Challenges: Stress and Exhaustion in Raising Children.
B. The Unique Role of Mothers in Childcare.
C. How Having Children Boosts Brain Health in Parents.

D. Why Fathers Are Overlooked in Parenting Studies.

Bill Sumiel was having a tough Friday. It was October 2020, and the 71-year-old, who was dealing with
kidney failure (肾衰竭) and had been on dialysis (透析) for a few years, found himself at a vascular center 30 miles
from home. With all his family members busy with work, Sumiel took an Uber to and from his appointment. In fact,
Sumiel was no stranger to the struggles of kidney disease. He’d been diagnosed with diabetes more than 20 years
before, which led to his kidney problems. He was on the transplant list, but no matches had yet appeared.
Timothy Letts, 31, was an Uber driver whose daily job was to pick up people who needed a ride. He was
driving around on the street and waiting for orders when his phone pinged with the request for Sumiel’s ride home.
The trip was out of Letts’s way. Still, he took the fare, figuring if the passenger was coming from a medical facility
and needed a ride.
When Sumiel got into the car, Letts could see that the older man was pale but in good spirits. And as they set
out on the 40-minute drive to Sumiel’s home, the pair got down to chatting. “You really lit up the car with positive
energy,” said Letts, who shared with Sumiel that he was a proud army veteran. Sumiel, who worked in sales at a
company that produced pipes, mentioned that in the past he’d enjoyed volunteering in his community, organizing
various public welfare activities to help people in need. But he was doing less these days, he explained, because the
dialysis treatments left him exhausted. Then Sumiel revealed that he was searching for a kidney donor. Letts joked
that he’d be a good donor candidate, given that he didn’t drink or smoke. Sumiel agreed, but he didn’t think much
of it. Letts, however, couldn’t stop thinking about it. About a quarter mile away from Sumiel’s house, Letts said, “I’
d like to see if I could be a match to give you a kidney.”
Letts was true to his word. He got in touch with Sumiel just a few days later and then contacted the kidney
transplant program. After a months-long screening process — including an interview, sharing medical records,
and medical examination, they were told to wait for news back home.
