A Good Helper
Genevieve Moss has serious hearing loss. She can hardly hear anything. And in her life, alone in a town
in England, she often felt lonely.
Then one day in April 2021, something drew her attention as she was reading the local newspaper. It was
a photo of a lovely black-and-white cat. A family was looking for a home for their last newborn cat. Moss fell
in love with the cat and connected(联系) with the family. As a result, Moss brought the cat home happily. She
called it Zebby because the cat’s colors look like those of a zebra.
Moss hoped that Zebby could help her deal with loneliness in her life. But she was not sure if Zebby would
become her helper and her ears. From then on, Zebby lived together with his owner. He always slept next to
Moss. When he heard noises in the dark, he used to jump up. “He has become my night watch cat,” Moss said.
“Sometimes, he would run around the room until I woke up.”
After several weeks, Moss noticed that whenever her phone rang or someone knocked at the door, Zebby
would touch her with his paw(爪子). It wasn’t long before the cat took on another task. He could help to collect
Moss’s mails. Whenever he heard the mailbox being opened, he ran towards it, carried the mail in his mouth
and dropped it at Moss’s feet.
In July 2023, Zebby won Britain’s National Cat of the Year by Cats Protection, which was the largest cat
charity in the UK. Moss was amazed by the news. According to the charity, Zebby beat out about 3,000 other
cats because of the many ways he helped Moss. Although Zebby had no training at all, his instinct(本能) seemed
to tell him that his owner needed his help.
“Zebby has made my house a home, ” Moss said. “I can hardly imagine not having Zebby in my life now.”
24. There is something wrong with Moss’s ______.
A. legs B. eyes C. ears D. arms

26. What can we know from the passage

I spent my childhood on the pages of the Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Mars books. Good books, meaning good stories,
often cheered me up and developed my imagination. The written words in those books encouraged me a lot.
Not too long ago, my neighborhood had to move to another place because of a hurricane(飓风). After putting
my cat in the car, I filled my suitcase with as many books as it would fit. I was ready to leave with the clothes on my
back, but I was not willing(愿意) to leave any of my books.
On my last birthday, my sister gave me an e-reader. I secretly hated it and made up my mind not to read with it.
One day, while I was getting well from a bad cold, I downloaded a book onto the evil reader in order to be out
of complete boredom. To my joy, I could make the print larger so that I could read more clearly. After that, I did not
touch any real books. I usually carried my e-reader in my handbag and found it very convenient(方便的) to use.
While I was shopping at a local bookstore for a day planner, I started to feel the old pressure of my forgotten friends.
I put the thoughts of the day planner away and looked through the new books for several hours. I started feeling
guilty(有罪的). I missed holding a book and reading through the pages. I also missed using the bookmarks my
children made for me when they were young.
Now, it’s difficult to choose between them. Could I continue to use the e-reader, or go back to read real books
My friend Keller gave me wise advice in the past conversations.
“Don’t make things complicated(复杂的)! Why can’t you use both of them Stop thinking so much.” she
explained, “Relax. Enjoy the new world.”
If I drive my car to travel next time, you can find me loading real books in the car. I will also leave room for my
e-reader.
27. According to the passage, the writer used to ___________.
A. prefer downloading real books onto e-readers
B. play the music with an e-reader to get relaxed
C. wear a pair of glasses to read the print clearly
D. spend much time in reading good real books
28. What’s Paragraph 4 mainly about
A. What trouble the writer fell into after using the e-reader.
B. Why the writer put the thoughts of the day planner away.
C. How the writer did with the pressure from the real books.
第5页/共10页
D. When the writer began to use the e-reader to read instead.
29. From the passage, we can infer(推断) that __________.
A. it was so difficult for the writer to learn to use the e-reader
B. the writer refused to read with the e-reader at the beginning
C. there might be something wrong with the writer’s both eyes
D. the writer expected to go back to read real books in the end

These days, living and dealing with kids can be difficult, but living and dealing with parents can be more
difficult.
If I have learned anything in my 16 years, it is that communication is very important, both when you
disagree and when you get along. With any relationship, you need to let other person know how you are feeling.
If you are not able to communicate, you drift apart. When you are mad at your parents, or anyone else, not
talking to them doesn’t solve any problems.
Communication begins with the concerns(关心) of another. It means that you can’t just come home from
school, go up to your room and take no notice to anyone. Even if you just say “Hi”, and see how their day was
for five minutes, it is better than nothing.
If you looked up the word “communication” in a dictionary, it would say “the exchange of ideas, the
conveyance(传递) of information, correspondence(通信), ways of communication; a letter or a message”. To
keep a good relationship, you must keep communication strong. Let people know how you feel, even if it’s just
by writing a note.
When dealing with parents, you always have to make them feel good about how they are doing as a parent.
If you are trying to make them see something as you see it, tell them that you’ll listen to what they have to say,
and ask them politely to listen to you. Shouting and walking away only makes the situation worse.
Here is an example: one night, Sophie went to a street party with her friends. She knew she had to be home
by midnight after the fireworks, but she didn’t think she could just ask to go home. That would be rude(粗鲁
的). After all, they had been nice enough to take her along with them. Needless to say, she was late getting
home. Her parents were mad at first, but when Sophie explained why she was late, they weren’t as mad as before
and let it munication is the key here. If Sophie’s parents had not been willing to listen, Sophie would
have been in a lot of trouble.
Communication isn’t a one-way matter: it goes both ways. Just remember: if you get into a situation like
Sophie’s, you should tell the other person how you feel and listen carefully at the same time.
30. What does the writer mainly tell us in the passage
A. It’s so difficult to keep good relationship with the people around us.
B. It’s easier to get along well with parents than with kids in a family.
C. It’s so important to communicate with each other in our daily lives.
D. It’s very dangerous to make other people know what we are feeling.
31. What does the underlined phrase “drift apart” in the passage mean
第6页/共10页
A. stay away from others B. argue with others
C. fall behind the others D. make friends with others
32. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A. We have to walk away in order to avoid having an argument with others.
B. It’s helpful to start communication with greetings or short conversations.
C. We’d better keep silent if we disagree with anyone in the communication.
D. It’s necessary to let other people know how we feel by shouting at them.
33. What’s the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage
A. To talk about the main steps of communicating with other people.
B. To introduce some proper ways to communicate in our daily lives.
C. To give some reasons why we should make a communication strong.
D. To tell us what we should do in order to keep a good communication.

In the United States, a group called Thread is helping school students meet their goals in their life. The
non-profit(非营利的 ) organization is in the eastern city of Baltimore, Maryland. The volunteers in the
organization help the students with almost everything. With the help of the volunteers in Thread, the students
can learn how to wash their clothes and how to get a job. Some volunteers drive students to school, others help
them with their schoolwork in their free time.
Thread was the idea of Sara Hemminger. She was a student learning at the Johns Hopkins University
School of Medicine. The hospital where she worked was in a poor neighborhood in Baltimore. Ms. Hemminger
wanted to do something to help young people living in poor neighborhoods. She wanted to give poor students
the advice and support them to succeed school and life. Thread now has more than 750 volunteers.
Thread helps connect students who are having difficulty in high school with people who can help them
change their lives. Some of the students may have to drop out from school or something bad is happening at
home. Volunteers stay with the students no matter what happens. Thread promises to keep the relationship
between the students and volunteers for at least 10 years.
Kate was 15 years old when she joined the program three years ago. “I had a lot of problems. When I
moved here, I didn’t know a lot of people because I didn’t have family here. When the volunteers came into my
life, it helped me with everything,” says Kate. Kate already knows what she wants to do with her life. She says
she wants to be a designer, and she wants to volunteer at Thread in the future.
Jesse Cohen is a medical student at the John Hopkins University School of Medicine. He has helped Kate
a lot. He says helping Kate has helped him. “Kate has taught me a lot about perseverance(毅力). She has
overcome many problems to get where she is today, which is really inspiring. Volunteering helps others and
also improves myself!” Cohen says.
