In ancient China, people had a deep relationship with nature, and they often expressed that through landscape(风景)paintings. Confucius once said, “The clever man finds pleasure in water, the kind man finds pleasure in hills,” stressing the importance of nature in Chinese culture.
Landscape painting is an important part of Chinese art for thousands of years. It began as early as the Neolithic era(新石器时期), when people painted on pottery and walls. During the Han Dynasty, artists were already creating detailed murals (paintings on the walls) and silk paintings that described historical events and daily life. During the Tang Dynasty, landscape painting reached new heights, with artists like Wang Wei starting using ink wash techniques(水墨技术)to express the beauty of mountains and rivers.
Nowadays, there’s a special exhibition(展览会)called Zhi Shui Ren Shan. It shows many landscape paintings by today’s artists. These artists used ink and other different ways to create new expressions in their paintings. At the exhibition, people can also see some paintings by an artist named Shitao. He lived long ago, during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, and had revolutionary(革命性的)ideas about art. His paintings are liked for hundreds of years because they are special and beautiful. Chinese cartoon movie Ne Zha 2 was very popular since it came out. In this story, many old cultural parts are brought to life. They seem to travel through thousands of years and show up on the movie screen.
The seven-colored lotus is very important in Ne Zha 2. It helps rebuild the bodies of the main characters, Nezha and Ao Bing. This cool idea comes from the Boshan censer. If you watched both Ne Zha movies, you must remember the funny and cute barrier beasts(结界兽). They are funny-looking beasts that protect places. These beasts look a lot like old things from the Sanxingdui culture. When you visit the Sanxingdui Museum in Sichuan, you can find that the barrier beasts are similar to items like the gold-masked bronze(青铜)head and the bronze bell in the shape of an eagle.
In the film, the Tianyuan tripod is an important thing for making magic medicines. It gets its shape from ancient bronze tripods used in the Shang and Zhou dynasties. In ancient China, the tripod mattered a lot as it was a sign of power and status(地位). People used it for special events. Also, the round shape of the Tianyuan tripod is similar to the dun. It seems that the Earth is in a season of volcanic eruptions(火山喷发)in recent months. Kilauea in Hawaii erupted on March 4th, 2025, with hot red rock shooting about 50 meters high. Japan’s Sakurajima Volcano erupted on magma
March 3rd, 2025, shooting out large amounts of volcanic ash(灰). Many people living around the area quickly moved away to stay safe. Also, volcanoes in other places showed active signs.
The volcanoes mentioned above have one thing in common: They are all in the Circum-Pacific Belt(环太平洋带). This is a 40,000-kilometer area along the Pacific Ocean. Seventy-five percent of Earth’s volcanoes are there, and ninety percent of Earth’s earthquakes happen there, too.
Volcanic eruptions and earthquakes in the Circum-Pacific Belt are caused by the active movement of tectonic plates(地壳板块). The plates push against each other and cause the rocks to get so hot that they finally become magma. When too much magma builds up underground, it needs to find a way out. Usually, the magma shooting out has temperatures of 800℃ to 1000℃
Some volcanic eruptions are very powerful and can erupt suddenly, while others are not. This depends on the magma. If magma is thin and runny, gases(气体)in it can get out easily. Then the magma just moves out slowly in a runny way. If magma is thick, gases cannot move easily. Pressure builds up until the gases rush out with great force, causing a powerful eruption. This kind of eruption can be dangerous. The ash that is erupted into the sky can kill plants, animals and even humans.
