Published in 1831, The Hunchback of Notre-Dame tells a tragic story of events in Pairs. Esmeralda’s beauty means that many men fall in love with her. One such man sends the hunchback Quasimodo to kidnap Esmeralda. But Quasimodo fails and is captured and tortured in public. Esmeralda hears his call for water, and steps forwards out of mercy. She offers Quasimodo a drink of water, which saves him and also captures his heart. When Esmeralda is later sentenced to death for a crime she did not commit, Quasimodo rescues her from an angry crowd outside the Notre-Dame Cathedral. Esmeralda is safe from execution as long as she stays inside the cathedral...

1 Esmeralda and Quasimodo were still for several moments, as they considered their predicament in silence, she so graceful, he so repulsive. Every moment Esmeralda discovered some fresh defect in Quasimodo, as her glance travelled from his knock knees to his hunched back, from his hunched back to his single eye. How anyone could be formed in such a way was beyond her comprehension. Yet there was so much melancholy and so much gentleness spread over all this that she gradually adjusted to it.
Para. 1

21.【As if to do与as if doing区别】
As if to do与as if doing的语义辨析
具体看看as if to do与as if doing的区别问题:
①The man sitting opposite me smiled dreamily, as if ____ something pleasant in the past.
A. to remember B. remembered C. having been remembered D. remembering
② He shook his head as if to say “Don t trust them.”
问题是:这里第一题的答案是选项D,使用的是as if doing的结构,但为什么句②中的as if后面用to呢?
这个问题实质是问as if to do与as if doing到底如何区分。
由于不定式to do具有表示动作未发生的特点,因此as if to do表示一个尚未发生的动作,相当于说as if sb. is going to do或as if sb. is about to do。此外,不定式to do往往具有目的含义,所以as if to do也可具有目的含义。由于现在分词doing具有表示动作已发生或正在发生的特点,因此as if doing表示一个已经发生或正在发生的动作,相当于说as if sb. has done/did/is doing。
21.【As if to do与as if doing区别】
①John opened his mouth,as if to protest. But he thought better of it.
②He opened his mouth,as if to yawn.
③He climbed the mountain as though walking upon flat ground.
④He put his head on the desk as if sleeping.
解析:这里的as if sleeping=as if he was sleeping.
