The Code of Hammurabi is a well-preserved legal code of Babylonia, dating back to about 1754 BC. It was one of the first forms of law, consisting of 282 laws. It was written on a large stone monument and put in a public place where people could see it.

Activity 1
Background Information
Liberty Leading the People, oil painting (1830) by French artist Eugène Delacroix commemorating the July Revolution in Paris that removed Charles X, the restored Bourbon king, from the throne. The heroic scene of rebellion was initially received with mixed reviews, but it became one of Delacroix’s most popular paintings, marking the July Revolution and justified revolt.

Activity 1
Background Information
The “Big Three” attractions of the Louvre are generally believed to be Venus de Milo, the Winged Victory of Samothrace and Mona Lisa.
Activity 1
Background Information
“The general composition derives from a 4th -century-BCE Corinthian (科林斯式的) statue. The twisting figure and modernized drapery (/ dre p ri/垂褶布) give the Venus great nobility.
To discover the Venus de Milo at the Louvre is to admire a goddess as if ‘captured in a photograph’, frozen in a moment with her draped garment slipping gradually down her hips.”
Venus de Milo

Activity 1
Background Information
“The 18-foot sculpture depicts Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. As wet and wind-blown drapery clings (sticks) to her body, the winged figure triumphantly steps toward the front of a ship, leading historians to conclude that it was created to commemorate a successful sea battle.”
Winged Victory of Samothrace
Activity 1
Background Information
“The painting presents a woman in half-body portrait, which has as a backdrop a distant landscape. The subject’s softly sculptural face shows Leonardo’s skilful handling of sfumato (/sfu’mɑ:t u/use of fine shading) and reveals his understanding of the musculature (肌肉系统) and the skull beneath the skin. The delicately painted veil, the finely wrought (special) tresses (long hair), and the careful rendering (expressing) of folded fabric demonstrate Leonardo’s studied observations and inexhaustible patience.
Mona Lisa
Activity 1
Background Information
Moreover, the sensuous (/ sen u s/ 赏心悦目的) curves of the sitter’s hair and clothing are echoed in the shapes of the valleys and rivers behind her. The sense of overall harmony achieved in the painting - especially apparent in the sitter’s faint smile - reflects Leonardo’s idea of the cosmic (great) link connecting humanity and nature, making this painting an enduring (long-lasting) record of Leonardo’s vision. In its exquisite synthesis of sitter and landscape, the Mona Lisa set the standard for all future portraits.”

1 Which of the three artworks makes the greatest impression on you Why
2 Which galleries and museums have you visited Share your experience with the class.
I'd say the most impressive artwork(艺术品)that makes the greatest impression on me is Mona Lisa, because one can always have a different view of her when looking at this painting in a different way.
I once visited the Palace Museum, and the experience left a deep impression on me. The royal buildings, which are so magnificent, caught my sight immediately when I stepped into the front gate. Travelling through the palaces, I was quite shed to see the elegance of the collections. They really touched me. I hope you can all visit the museum yourself.
