The Luling Mountains in Jinzhou, Liaoning Province, used to be a deserted area without even a single tree. Now, it is a leafy paradise for birds, and tourists are flooding in.The huge transformation has occurred thanks to the consistent efforts of Tian Wangui, 67, and his wife Lu Min, 63, over nearly half a century.
In 1982, the couple contracted(承包)the land-use rights of the two mountains near their home. They intended to plant fruit trees in the mountains to make a living.Back then, the mountains were deserted with no trees at all.To help the seedlings(树苗)they planted survive in the barren(贫瘠的)land, the couple had to carry water to the mountains on their backs. They also bought whatever seeds were available from a nearby forest farm and spread them every spring, hoping to afforest the mountains. With such an extensive planting method, however, they initially failed to see many seeds take root in the barren soil. But the couple didn't give up.
The couple's perseverance finally paid off. They discovered that some tree species were tough enough to survive, including pine and mulberry. Now, more than 50,000 trees of over 20 species cover the land they contracted, following their consistent efforts to sow tree seeds year after year.
As the mountains became lush(郁郁葱葱), Tian and Lu were charged with a new task—patrolling(巡逻)their nearly 67 hectares of forest every day to prevent fires. The patrol even didn't stop on the eve of last year's Chinese Lunar New Year.Instead of watching the CCTV Spring Festival Gala on Jan.21st like most Chinese, the couple went to patrol the mountains with the families of their son and daughter.“Many people set off fireworks to mark the arrival of the new year, so the holiday is a time when we have to stay cautious against fire threats,” Tian said.

You hate me.You don't even know me and you hate me.Before we've even spoken, you hate me.At least that's how it feels on my end of the call as a female collections officer at a call center.
I dread the moment when I have to log on to our phone system first thing in the morning because I never know who is going to be on the other end of that call.
Sometimes it's an easy task. The caller is pleasant and has accepted personal responsibility for their debts, and we get through the phone call with ease. Then there are the ones who call in looking for a fight, or looking for someone to blame.Through the luck of the phone system, that person is me.
I've had people who shout at me, call me horrible names, accuse me personally of taking their money and threaten me.Why?I think it's because I am invisible.I think I would be treated with the same level of disrespect if we were face to face.Fortunately for me, I have had years of experience in customer service, so I'm fairly rich in not letting the negative encounters bother me.
The biggest and most effective skill when it comes to the job is empathy (同理心).I can appreciate the situation which the caller is in because I've been there. That's why I'm good at my job—I understand what you're going through, and I'm here to help.
Some days though, no matter how much I try to leave the stress behind when I hang up the phone, it stays with me.I may do some deep breathing, go for a quick walk or simply stick my head outside for a burst of fresh air.I do this so I don't carry that negativity on to my next call. That next call may be a person having the worst day of their life, but I don't want to ever be the one who makes it worse. We are all humans just trying to get by in life, which makes you and me equal. So please, the next time we talk, remember that.
9.What does the underlined word “dread” in paragraph 2 probably mean?

C.They do not see her as a real person. D.They accuse her of taking their money.
11.Why does the author think she is good at her job?
A.She can offer callers best advice.
B.She is always respected by callers.
C.She can put herself in others' shoes.
D.She isn't easily influenced by negativity.
12.What is the author's main purpose in writing this text?
A.To call for understanding of her job.
B.To explain why she is good at her job.
C.To introduce what she is responsible for.
D.To complain about her being treated badly.

When I started Social-Engineer, I just left a company that was amazing. It was like a family. The pain of leaving was real for me and like all family separation, it wasn't 100% smooth.I was heartbroken to leave but wanted to take every lesson I learned to my new company.I was determined to also take all the good memories with me.Yes, there were mistakes from both sides of the fence but instead of focusing on those, I went away remembering all the great times, life lessons and growth I had gifted to me.
I figured I would grow my company by being a nice man and working hard, and never demanding more from my people than I was willing to give, believing this approach would earn respect and effort in return.I would say things to myself like, “Well, I did this, so they should do that.” Or “I am this way, so they should be that way.”
And to be honest, it felt real.It felt like it was an honest evaluation.
But...But...But...
I started to have people problems.I am a very strong, direct communicator and although in many ways that is a strength, it can be a weakness in other ways.I often hurt people's feelings.Even though I was very self-aware of this, I still messed up.Now this is odd to admit out loud for a company that basically focuses on helping dozens of companies make huge changes.
I went to see a psychologist.Natasha actively listened to all I said and then every now and then presented a thought as a question or a mild statement. She wanted to challenge me to change, challenge me to expand my thoughts.I was in my session with Natasha and I was saying things like this:
“If I gave this person tens of thousands of dollars in a raise in one year, they should be more appreciative.”
“If I have a great salary, benefits and support package, this person should have been more thankful.”
Natasha stopped me and said, “Well, you just SHOULD all over yourself, didn't you?Did you pay for devotion?Did you pay for honor?Did you pay for appreciation?”
The sad answer was NO.
“You want to see the change that you so desire—then be the change,” Natasha said. She then mentioned Bruce Lee, who said “Empty your mind, be formless.Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup.You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle...Now, water can flow or it can crash.Be water, my friend.”
I know what I should do.Will you join me
13.Why was the author confident about his company management?
A.He believed he was gifted for it.
B.His employees were well qualified.
C.He had lessons and work principles.
D.His previous mistakes had been removed.
14.What are the author's problems rooted in?
A.The rigid rules. B.The lack of vision.
C.The company's focus. D.The author's social skill.
15.What did Natasha conclude from the session?
A.The author fell into a thinking trap.
B.The employees expected too much.
C.The author was not really committed.
D.The employees were victims of management.
16.What does the author invite us to do?
A.Read Bruce Lee. B.Learn to change.
C.Take more duties. D.Desire less for more.

根据第一段“I was heartbroken to leave but wanted to take every lesson I learned to my new company.(离开的时候我很伤心,但我想把我学到的每一课都带到我的新公司。)”和第二段“I figured I would grow my company by being a nice man and working hard, and never demanding more from my people than I was willing to give, believing this approach would earn respect and effort in return.(我想我要做一个好人,努力工作,从不要求我的员工超过我愿意付出的,这样才能发展我的公司,我相信这种方法会赢得尊重和努力作为回报。)”
根据第五段“I started to have people problems.I am a very strong, direct communicator and although in many ways that is a strength, it can be a weakness in other ways.I often hurt people's feelings.Even though I was very self-aware of this, I still messed up.(我开始有人际关系问题。我是一个非常强大、直接的沟通者,虽然在很多方面这是一个优点,但在其他方面也可能是一个缺点。我经常伤害别人的感情。尽管我很清楚这一点,但我还是搞砸了。)”可知,作者经常伤害别人的感情,他的问题的根源在于他的社交技能。故选D。
15.A 推理判断题。根据倒数第四段“Well, you just SHOULD all over yourself, didn't you?Did you pay for devotion?Did you pay for honor?Did you pay for appreciation?(嗯,你认为都‘应该’,对吗?你为忠诚付钱了吗?你为荣誉付钱了吗?你为感激付钱了吗?)”和倒数第三段“The sad answer was NO.(可悲的答案是否定的。)” 故选A。
根据倒数第二段“You want to see the change that you so desire—then be the change(你希望看到你所渴望的变化,那就改变吧)”和最后一段“I know what I should do.Will you join me?(我知道我该怎么做。你愿意和我一起去吗?)”可知,作者接受了Natasha的建议,要做出改变,并邀请读者和他一起作出改变。故选B。

(2023·新高考Ⅰ卷·阅读理解B)
When John Todd was a child, he loved to explore the woods around his house, observing how nature solved problems.A dirty stream, for example, often became clear after flowing through plants and along rocks where tiny creatures lived. When he got older, John started to wonder if this process could be used to clean up the messes people were making.
After studying agriculture, medicine, and fisheries in college, John went back to observing nature and asking questions. Why can certain plants trap harmful bacteria(细菌)?Which kinds of fish can eat cancer-causing chemicals? With the right combination of animals and plants, he figured, maybe he could clean up waste the way nature did.He decided to build what he would later call an eco-machine.
The task John set for himself was to remove harmful substances from some sludge(污泥).First, he constructed a series of clear fiberglass tanks connected to each other. Then he went around to local ponds and streams and brought back some plants and animals. He placed them in the tanks and waited.Little by little, these different kinds of life got used to one another and formed their own ecosystem. After a few weeks, John added the sludge.
He was amazed at the results. The plants and animals in the eco-machine took the sludge as food and began to eat it! Within weeks, it had all been digested, and all that was left was pure water.
Over the years, John has taken on many big jobs.He developed a greenhouse—like facility that treated sewage(污水) from 1,600 homes in South Burlington. He also designed an eco-machine to clean canal water in Fuzhou, a city in southeast China.
“Ecological design” is the name John gives to what he does.“Life on Earth is kind of a box of spare parts for the inventor,” he says.“You put organisms in new relationships and observe what's happening. Then you let these new systems develop their own ways to self-repair.”
24.What can we learn about John from the first two paragraphs?
