Language points
1. Do you intend to stay in China for long, Tony
1) intend 作“计划;打算;想要”讲时,表示想要做而未做的
事情。intend to do sth打算做某事;想要做某事。
e.g. Finney intends to go to Australia next year if all goes well.
2) for long 相当于for a long period of time, 表示“很长时间”。
e.g. — Have you been waiting for long
— No, not for long. Only a few minutes.
2. And even if I go back to the UK, I’ll come back and visit you all.
even if (=even though)意为 “即使, 纵然”, 引导让步状语从句。
【注意】even if 引导的从句是往往是假设性的, 相当于汉语的“即使”“纵然”“就算”“哪怕”;
even though 引导的从句内容往往是真实的, 主要用于引出不利用于主句情况的信息, 相当于汉语的“尽管”“虽然”。
e.g. I wouldn't lose courage even if I should fail ten times.
即使要失败十次, 我也绝不灰心。
He went out even though it was raining.
尽管在下雨,他还是出去了。
3. Let’s fetch something to eat.
1) fetch 作动词, 意为 “(去) 拿来”。
e.g. Dad asked me to fetch him an evening paper.
e.g. Can you fetch it out and show me it
2) 【辨析】fetch/take/bring/catch
fetch “(去)拿来”, 指从说话的地方到其他地方, 再回到说话的地方。eg: Please go and fetch some milk.
take “带走;拿走”, 指拿到或带到别处去, 不是说话人所在的地方。eg: Jim, take your old books away.
bring “带来;拿来”, 指拿到或带到说话人所在的地方。
eg: Please bring me my pen.
carry “搬;扛;提”, 表示携带的动作, 不说明方向。
eg: The young man helped the old man carry the box.
