Every day Mengel, a 67-year-old woman, wakes up and puts on her man-made leg. Then, Mengel does the
same for Lola-Pearl, her five-year-old cat.
Mengel has many cats. Most of them have disabilities (残疾). But Lola-Pearl is special. She is a treatment cat.
And, she and Mengel are partners of a kind. They are among 200 treatment cat teams registered (注册) by the
nonprofit group, Pet Partners. The group helps humans and pets alike by setting them up into teams to provide
animal-assisted treatment. The teams visit hospitals, nursing homes and schools and assist those in need.
Chastain Griffin is a researcher who studies the effects of treatment cats. She said that there is a lot of research
on other treatment animals like dogs, and many people are surprised to learn that cats can be treatment animals too.
However, there is not enough on cats.
Mengel says Lola-Pearl showed signs that she would make a good treatment cat soon after the animal joined
her family. Mengel took her new cat to a meeting for the disabled.
Recently people who attended a support group for disabled persons were able to meet Lola-Pearl. They petted
her as she woke up from a rest. On the side of the cat carrier she rode in was a sign: “Treatment Cat”.
Mengel was a traveling nurse when she got into a car accident that almost killed her. One of her legs could not
be saved. Later, she connected with a friend in Missouri who had a severely injured cat. Her legs were twisted
together. An animal medical specialist worked to repair the damage but, in the end, he had to remove one of the
baby cat’s legs. Mengel took Lola-Pearl as her cat after talking with her friend. “It’s a really rewarding experience,”
she said. “I get just as much out of it as the people that I visit.”

A. Match animals with new owners. B. Offer animal-assisted treatment.

What do you get when you mix the sports of rodeo (牛仔竞技表演) with skiing An extreme winter sport
called skijoring. The competition includes riding horses that use ropes to pull skiers over jumps and around barriers
(障碍). At the same time, competitors try to hit round targets with a special stick.
Skijoring is a winter sport that celebrates the combination (结合) of competition and ski culture in the U. S.
Mountain West. Horses — and sometimes dogs , snowmobiles and even cars — pull skiers by rope at speeds as
high as 64 kilometers per hour. Skiers can go over jumps as high as 2.4 meters.
One of the most popular skijoring races in the country takes place in Leadville, Colorado. The event, called
“The Granddaddy of Them All”, has been a tradition there since 1949.
Internet reports say skijoring takes its name from the Norwegian word skijoring, which means “ski driving”. It
started as a way to get around in Scandinavia and became popular in Europe’s Alps Mountains around 1900.
Today’s sport is dangerous, and injuries are common among riders and skiers alike. One of the first riders in
the Leadville race earlier this month fell off his horse and had to be removed from the track.
Skijoring is especially popular in Poland and Switzerland, as well as in the U. S. states of Colorado, Wyoming
and Montana. Today, skijoring is growing in popularity because of social media. Five years ago, the sport had
about 350 teams of riders, skiers, and horses in the U. S. Now, about 1,000 teams are competing, and the number of
races has increased from about 15 a year to more than 30.
People hope it will one day be an event in the Winter Olympics. But getting the sport into the Olympics has
proven difficult. There is no official governing body. It has no clear set of rules. And there is no system that would
qualify (使……有资格) riders to take part in the Winter Games. In addition, every course is different, and every
race has its own special traditions.
8. What did skijoring originally serve as
A. A means of transport. B. An event for pleasure.
C. A traditional festival. D. A way to celebrate.
9. What do the figures in paragraph 6 show about skijoring
A. It is too dangerous to take part in.
B. Ⅱattracts a larger number of players.
C. It requires more measures to ensure safety.
D. It is faced with the challenge of attracting more audience.
10. What does the author intend to tell us about skijoring in the last paragraph
A. Its unique playing conditions. B. Its shortage of qualified riders.
C. Its difficulty becoming an Olympic event. D. Its possibility of keeping special traditions.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Combination Brings Wonder B. Tradition Never Dies with Time
C. The Wild Winter Sport of Skijoring D. A Brief Introduction to Olympic Games

Information from this year’s IQAir World Air Quality Report shows only seven countries met the World
Health Organization’s (WHO) pollution recommendations in 2023.
The report said the five countries with what it called the lowest air quality had particle (微粒) levels at least
nine times higher than what the WHO recommends. Three South Asian countries—Bangladesh, Pakistan and
India—had the world’s lowest air quality.
The information comes from the Swiss company IOAir, which makes air quality-related products. The report
used measurements from over 30,000 stations across 134 countries.
IOAir uses the WHO’s standard of PM2.5 to measure the size of breathable pollutant particles in the air. The
PM2.5 measurement means the particles are 2.5 microns or less in diameter (直径). The diameter of human hair,
for example, is about 30 times larger than a particle of 2. 5 microns.
In Bangladesh, the concentration(浓度) of PM2.5 particles reached 19.9 micrograms per cubic meter in 2023.
In Pakistan, the number was 73.7. India’s level was 54.4. The WHO recommends a reading of no more than five
micrograms.
The only countries that met the WHO’s pollution recommendations were Australia, Estonia, Finland, Grenada,
Iceland, Mauritius and New Zealand.
Of the 134 countries and regions measured, 124 had higher levels than what was called for in the WHO’s
pollution strategies. Both Bangladesh and India’s air quality diminished in 2023. In 2022, India was eighth and
Bangladesh was fifth.
In India, New Delhi’s measurement of 92.7 micrograms made it the most-polluted capital city. Three countries
that were on the list in 2022 were removed in 2023 because of problems in collecting information. They were Chad,
Iran and Sudan. Chad was the world’s most polluted country the year before.
IQAir provides its report each year. But many countries do not have public air quality measurement systems.
That is a big problem, considering the large potential benefits and low cost.
12. Why does the author mention human hair
A. To give an account of how the research was done.
B. To indicate how much information is hidden in hair.
C. To explain the damage caused by polluted air.
D. To show how small the size of the particle is.
13. Which of the following countries had the worst air quality in 2023
A. Bangladesh. B. Estonia. C. Mauritius. D. Grenada.
14. What does the underlined word “diminished” mean in paragraph 7
A. Kept unchanged. B. Remained unstable.
C. Worsened. D. Improved.
15. Why were three countries taken off the 2023 list
A. IQAir failed to collect data on them. B. IOAir reduced its number of subjects.
C. Their air quality was good enough. D. They refused to provide their information.

I just wanted to share something that happened last Friday afternoon. I was at a restaurant eating with my
family. As we finished up, a homeless man entered with a handcart (手推车) full of his belongings, who was
clearly very hot from walking outside and clearly hungry and thirsty.
When we got up to leave, he walked past us and sat at the table we’d just left and started eating the food we
had left.
We noticed the restaurant workers signed to each other to take away the plates from the table. As we walked
out , we heard someone say “excuse me”.
It was the man sitting at our table. He noticed that I’d left my purse behind and he was walking towards us to
give it back.
I said thank you from my heart. My husband then ordered him a meal and a few drinks to express our thanks.
On our drive home, I took the opportunity to explain to my six-year-old son what had happened and the
importance of helping others, as well as being thankful to have food to eat and a house to live in.
In a further shaming and annoying turn, two days later I looked in my purse for a card and found I had $50 in
cash in it. I so badly wished I could have given it to him! He could easily have taken it but he didn’t. I was just too
busy trying to explain the importance of kindness to my child and it never crossed my mind to check the purse in
the first place.
注意:1.续写词数应为 150 个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
My son suggested buying more things for the homeless man.
