Crowded by defenders, Charlie Villanueva leaps toward the basket. One hand lifts the ball high, and for
a moment he seems to hang in the air. Then he hammers the ball through the rim. Slam dunk! His career may
look like a slam dunk, being a national champion at the University of Connecticut, and setting beginner records
with the Toronto Raptors.
However, life wasn’t always easy for him. His success is due to more than his ability to play basketball
and he owes much of who he is today to a skin disease called alopecia areata, which is not infectious but is
caused by an error in the immune system that triggers germ-fighting cells to attack the body’s own hair-
growing cells. Charlie was affected at age 10 and lost all his hair by age 12. This made him a target for bullying,
leading him to withdraw and hide under caps and hoods.
With the support of his mother, Charlie found refuge in basketball. He channeled his frustrations and
stress into motivation, improving his skills to the point where his talent overshadowed his condition. The
bullying stopped, and his basketball career took off.
All along the way, Charlie has consistently dedicated himself to helping others. Ever since his first year
as a new player, he has served as a spokesperson for the National Alopecia Areata Foundation, and went on to
establish the Charlie Villanueva Foundation, an organization aimed at supporting families with children
suffering from alopecia and stopping all forms of bullying. As the son of immigrants from the Dominican
Republic, he has even worked towards ending poverty in that country.
Charlie inspires young people to embrace their individuality and have confidence in themselves. “We’re
all unique in our own ways,” he says, encouraging them to remember that with dedication and self-belief, any
dream is within reach.

We know our workplace clothing choices can affect what others think us and influence our success. Do
those choices also shape productivity by affecting how we see ourselves
Researchers conducted two experiments in the United States and a field study in South Korea to
investigate the meanings employees associate with their dress. In the first experiment, participants viewed
photos of different outfits (套装) and indicated what they thought each would convey in a “business-casual”
office. In the second, participants first changed into business-casual clothing and then into new business-casual
outfits they selected to correspond with one of three randomly assigned characteristics: aesthetics (美学),
conformity (一致性),uniqueness. A control group was asked to select an outfit similar to their first one. All
participants were told to imagine that they worked at a company where people could generally wear what they
wanted to and where most choose business-casual dress. After each clothing change they reported on how they
would feel going to work in what they had on, what they thought their clothing would convey, and their level
of self-esteem (自尊).
The experiments showed that people associate clothing high in aesthetics with personal attractiveness,
conforming clothing with a sense of belonging, and unique clothing with distinctiveness. and revealed that
each of the three qualities raised self-esteem.
The field study involved 84 white-collar employees who worked on-site and were free to choose their
clothes They filled out three questionnaires daily for 10 days, reporting on what they were wearing, their self-
esteem, their interactions with colleagues and their productivity. Aesthetic and unique clothing boosted self-
esteem, which in turn boosted progress toward job goals and decreased social avoidance. Dress conformity
had similar effects, but only when employees frequently interacted with colleagues.

“Investing a little extra time in the morning to prepare an outfit that is aesthetically pleasing and unique-
and, if interactions with others are expected, highly conforming to organizational standards—can have a
meaningful impact on how an employee feels about themselves throughout the workday,” the researchers write.

A. what types of clothing employees like to wear
B. whether employees can choose the dress they like
C. why dress conformity is required in the workplace
D. how employees feel about their workplace clothing
29. What did all the participants do in the second experiment
A. Work at the same company.
B. View photos of different outfits.
C. Report their feelings about clothes.
D. Select dress from three types randomly.
30. What can we know about the findings in Paragraph 4
A. Three assigned types have the same effects.
B. Unique clothing can increase social avoidance.
C. Conforming clothing can strengthen coworkers’ bonds.
D. Aesthetic clothing has more advantages over other types.
31. What is the best title for the text

B. Dress Up To Be More Attractive
C. Wear Proper Clothes To Fit In Society

The idea of billions of people going through a few masks a week during this pandemic definitely rings
alarm bells, but a team of researchers in Melbourne may have the solution.
They’ve discovered that adding millions of discarded face masks to road-paving (铺路) mixtures would
actually lower the cost of the road, while preventing billions of them from landfills(垃圾填埋地). Just one
kilometer of road would need three million masks, and the polypropylene (聚丙烯) plastic used to make single-
use surgical face masks also increased the flexibility and durability of the road.
The new material is a mixture of about 2% torn masks, with recycled concrete aggregate (RCA)—a
material obtained from waste concrete and other minerals from destroyed buildings. This recycled material
was found in the study to be ideal for two of the four layers generally required to create roadways. Paving a
kilometer of two-way road with the RCA and three million face masks would result in a change of 93 tons of
第 6 页 共 12 页
页
waste from landfills.
The final product then is more resistant to wear than asphalt (沥青), as well as being cheaper too, provided
there was a method for collecting masks. The research team did a cost-analysis and found that, at $26 per ton,
the RCA was about half the cost of mining raw materials, and as much as a third of the cost of shipping the
used masks to a landfill.
The widespread application would be ideal for large infrastructure (基础设施) projects. For example,
Washington has the 11th worst roads in terms of unaddressed repairs in the U.S. If the damaged roads in
Washington state were repaired with the RCA/mask mixture, it would reuse nearly 10 billion masks, sparing
American landfills hundreds of millions of tons of trash.
It’s said that the team is looking for private industry partners or governments willing to give their plastic
mask road an opportunity for a large-scale test.
32. What does the underlined word “discarded” mean in paragraph 2
A. recycled. B. produced.
C. mixed. D. abandoned.
33. What is the new material used to pave ways made of
A. 2% torn masks, concrete and tons of trash.
B. Polypropylene plastic and building materials.
C. Single-use surgical masks and recycled concrete aggregate.
D. Waste concrete and other minerals from destroyed buildings.
34. Why are numbers mentioned in paragraph 4
A.To tell us what the team has found.
B. To prove this material is cost-effective in paving roads.
C. To explain repairing roads costs a lot of materials.
D. To praise the hard work the team has done.
35. What can we learn from the text
A. The material used to pave roads is made of masks.
B. Generally speaking, it requires two layers to create roadways.
C. It remains to be tested whether the solution is practical.
D. The damaged roads in Washington were repaired with the RCA.

Mid-afternoon on a particularly busy Tuesday, I left my office and walked into a local Starbucks. I went

to Kate; I was talking to myself 49 15-20 years.
The conversation turned to our children’s 50 years, with Kate smiling proudly, thinking of the little
girl she raised who are now a woman. But I noticed her smile was 51 with regret. She explained that she
often wondered about what she could have done differently when her children were in their earlier years, “I
just wish ... wish I had brought them to each other’s sporting event and encouraged them to cheer...” Kate
noted.
This got me thinking. Is regret an unfortunate footnote (注脚) to 52 It seems that most parents
thought they could have done it better. But, each of them also has a 53 relationship with their kids.
Regret didn’t affect them in a meaningful way.
The bottom line is, we all feel like we could be doing this parent thing better. And quite clearly, years

An Inspiring Figure in History
Marie Curie, a Polish-born French scientist, remains one of the most remarkable figures in
scientific history. Despite facing gender discrimination and financial struggles, she became the
first woman to win a Nobel Prize and the only person to win Nobel Prizes in two different fields—
Physics and Chemistry.
Her groundbreaking discovery of radium and polonium revolutionized medical treatments,
laying the foundation for modern cancer therapy. More importantly, Curie’s dedication to science
and her selflessness in sharing research findings embodied true scientific spirit. She famously said,
"Nothing in life is to be feared; it is only to be understood."
Curie’s story teaches me that perseverance and curiosity can overcome any obstacle. Her
legacy inspires generations to pursue knowledge fearlessly, reminding us that even the humblest
beginnings can lead to extraordinary achievements.
