B
One of my earliest memories is of my father sitting me down at our kitchen table with canvases, paints, and brushes. He taught me how to blend colors and use different materials. Whenever we felt inspired, we set out all our materials and painted what our hearts desired.
My father grew up in a small village in the Dominican Republic. Despite not having many materials available, he created art with whatever he had. My father saved his money to buy paints and colored pencils to draw on the walls around his home. When he was 15, he arrived in America alone and stayed with his aunt in Florida for a while before finishing high school in New York with another aunt. He studied very hard. Eventually, my father was able to obtain his citizenship.
As I got older, he continued to give me lessons, teaching me different brush strokes and how to take care of my art supplies. He taught me to find beauty in everything and everyone around me. I grew to love drawing people, as I could highlight the physical features that make everyone unique and beautiful.
It wasn’t until I began looking carefully into my father’s paintings and the work of popular artists on Instagram that I started to be more critical of my work. I started to worry that I could never live up to my father’s talent. My simple, two-dimensional (2D) drawings fell flat compared to his realistic landscapes. Going through my sketchbooks and portfolios, I found fault in all my drawings. Art was my favorite thing in the world but I started to believe I wasn’t good at it. Instead of working toward improving, I decided to give up drawing.
My father noticed that I had been drawing and painting less and told me, “Mia, you should audition for the school. I wish I’d had an opportunity to study art like this when I was a kid.” My father’s bravery and strength are things that I desire to have. So over the next few months, I worked on my portfolio. Looking back at my pictures, I can see how much I have improved since then. The school must have seen potential in my drawings because I got in! It was eye-opening to attend a college that specializes in the arts. I learned to embrace my individuality and my talent. I have become more open about sharing my artworks and receiving constructive criticism, which raises my self-belief in my art.
4.Why does the author introduce her father’s experience in paragraph 2
A.To prove that art is a way to fight poverty.
B.To contrast her life with the difficulties her father experienced.
C.To criticize the lack of educational chances in rural areas.
D.To illustrate the roots of her father’s influence on her.
5.What do the underlined words “fell flat” in paragraph 4 mean
A.Outperformed other works. B.Lacked visual appeal.
C.Had complex structures. D.Looked extremely realistic.
6.What kind of person is the author’s father
A.Brave and carefree. B.Ambitious but dependent.
C.Hardworking and supportive. D.Creative but stubborn.
7.What can we learn from the last paragraph
A.Talent guarantees admission to art programs.
B.Progress can be achieved through trial and error.
C.Art is about following established rules.
D.Confidence comes from accepting imperfection.

Many people still remember the magic of Father Christmas from when they were children. As parents, they try to keep that magic alive for their children for as long as they can.
That is why Letters from Father Christmas could be the perfect book for those who regard Christmas as a special time of year. The man who wrote these letters is one of the most famous names in English literature — J.R.R. Tolkien, author of The Lord of the Rings. The letters were Tolkien’s way of keeping Father Christmas alive for his four children, over a period of more than twenty years.
Every Christmas, an envelope with a North Pole stamp arrived. It was addressed to Tolkien’s children. Who could it be from The children must have been very excited as they opened it. Inside, they would find a handwritten letter from Father Christmas. The letters were also beautifully illustrated—each must have taken its true author, Tolkien, a long time to complete.
The letters told wonderful stories about Father Christmas’s life and adventures at the North Pole. A regular character in the letters was Polar Bear, who once climbed the North Pole (an actual pole in this case) and fell through the roof of Father Christmas’s house. In another letter, Father Christmas complained about how he could not stop his helpers playing games with the toys instead of wrapping them up. Interestingly, the letters did not contain the usual warnings to children that they might not receive their presents if they were not good. The letters did, however, change as Tolkien’s children got older:
...but if you find that not many of the things you asked for have come, and not perhaps quite as many as sometimes, remember that this Christmas all over the world here are a terrible number of poor and starving people.
Letters from Father Christmas tells us that as well as enjoying the adventures of Father Christmas, Polar Bear and other characters at the North Pole, we can all share the true spirit of giving at Christmas time. By expressing love for his children in such a special way, Tolkien may indeed have been the real Father Christmas.
8.What is Tolkien famous for
A.His novel The Lord of the Rings. B.His letters to Father Christmas.
C.His fantasy childhood memories. D.His introduction to Father Christmas.
9.Why did the letters take Tolkien a long time to finish
A.They were sent from Father Christmas. B.They were wrapped up in good boxes.
C.It was hard to write the different stories. D.The beautiful pictures were hard to make.
10.What message was included in letters from Father Christmas
A.Life will be easy if you work hard. B.It’s no use complaining about life.
C.We should learn to give care to others. D.Children love presents with pictures.
11.In what way is Tolkien regarded as real Father Christmas
A.He addressed all his letters to Father Christmas.
B.He showed his love for his children in a special way.
C.He got others to know some people were starving.
D.He discovered the spirit of Father Christmas.

Twelve years ago, Danny called me from a dark, damp subway station. “A baby!” he shouted. “Get down here, and flag down a police car or something.” By nature, Danny is a very calm person, so when I could almost feel his heartbeat through the phone line, I ran.
When I got to the subway station, Danny was holding a light-brown-skinned baby, about a day old. The baby had been wrapped (被包裹) in an oversize black sweatshirt and left on the ground in a corner behind the gate.
What neither of us knew, or could have assumed, was that Danny had not just saved an abandoned infant; he had found our son.
Three months later, Danny appeared in family court to tell the story of finding the baby. Suddenly, the judge asked, “Would you be interested in adopting this baby ” The question surprised everyone in the courtroom, except Danny, who answered, simply, “Yes.”
“But I know it’s not that easy,” he said.
“Well, it can be,” said the judge before giving orders to allow me to be a parent-to-be.
My first reaction, when I heard, went something like, “Are you crazy How could you say yes without asking me
In three years as a couple, we had never discussed adopting a child: I was an devoted playwright (剧作家) working as a part-time word clerk. Danny was a respected yet wildly under-paid social worker. We had a roommate, who slept in our living room, to help pay the rent.
We knew how many challenges couples usually faced when they want to have a baby. And while Danny had patience and selflessness, I didn’t know how to change a diaper (尿布), let alone nurse a child. I didn’t trust the social system and was sure there would be difficulties. Also, I couldn’t handle parenthood. So I promised myself I wouldn’t devote to it.
The caretaker held the baby and then placed him in my arms. But when the baby stared up at me, with all the innocence and hope he showed to me, I, like Danny, completely fell for him.
12.Why did the author rush to the subway station
A.Because Danny finally found their son.
B.Because she sensed Danny met something urgent.
C.Because Danny had a heart disease.
D.Because someone gave birth to a baby there.
13.How did the author feel on hearing Danny’s answer to the judge’s question
A.Excited by Danny’s words.
B.Crazy to be a parent-to-be.
C.Angry about Danny’s decision.
D.Upset about losing her authority.
14.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that ______.
A.the author will adopt the baby
B.the couple were not to take the baby
C.the baby will bring hope to the family
D.the couple love each other very much
15.What is the author’s intention of writing the passage
A.To introduce a story of a poor family.
B.To inform people of the difficulty of adopting a baby.
C.To call on people to donate money to them.
D.To show human’s kindness and love by nature.

One day my grandfather gave me a gift — a piggy bank. It had an opening through which one could put money in, but the opening was not big enough to reach in. The only way to get at the money was to break the piggy bank open. My grandfather explained that was the whole idea: the piggy bank would help save my money so that, at the end of the year, I might have enough for that bike I dreamt about. He asked if I would put some of the money he gave me into the piggy bank. I agreed immediately and promised that I wouldn’t break it open until I could afford my dream bike.
Whenever he gave me money, I saved some and put it in the piggy bank. I loved the feel of shaking the piggy bank and hearing the sound of the coins. As it became heavier, I grew more excited, dreaming about buying my new bike, and all the adventures I could have on it.
Whenever I wanted to take some money from the piggy bank to buy delicious ice-creams or beautiful pens, I would imagine riding my bike on the street, and thinking of that, my thoughts about ice-creams or pens faded away. So for almost six months, I only put money into the piggy bank without taking any out. I thought I wouldn’t break my piggy bank for anything. But one day something unexpected happened. I saw a piece of news on the television that a serious earthquake had happened in a nearby province. As many houses were destroyed, a lot of children became homeless. Seeing their crying faces, I was sleepless that night.

In order to raise the awareness of fire safety, our school carried out a series of activities on November 9, the National Fire Day.
In the morning, all the classmates sat quietly in the classroom, watching a 30-minute video about fire safety. Shocked, we saw so many deaths and injuries due to the lack of safety consciousness. Then an impressive drill came. About 9:40 when the alarm went off, we ran quickly from the classroom to the playground.

Then, go for a spring outing by bike.” “Thank you, Grandpa.” I was overwhelmed with happiness.
