Three figures of speech used in poems.
a. The mountains were like enormous shadows on the horizon.
b. Her cheeks are red like a rose.
That test was a total breeze.
The branches waved in the wind.
b. The sun was smiling.
Learning to learn: What is rhyme
Rhyme is a typical feature of English poetry. A rhyme is a repetition of similar sounds (or the same sound) in two or more words. Children’s poems, called “nursery rhymes”, usually contain strong rhymes so they are easy to be remembered. In modem poetry, however, features other than rhyme are more important. Lines of modern poetry can be of variable length, the shape of the words on the page is more important and rhyme is not often used.
Read the poems again and tick the correct box(es) for each question.
Which poem … a b c
… uses its shape to help convey message
… has rhyming words at the end of lines
… uses metaphor
… uses simile
… uses personification

Think about words and expressions related to nature and add them to the mind map.

Work in pairs. Plan a poem. Consider the following:
what your poem will be about
what kind of poem you are going to write
what figures of speech you will use
what words you can use for that rhyme (if using rhyme)
Now write your poem.
Work in pairs. Make improvements to each other’s poems and share them with the class.
Post-writing
Who has seen the wind
Neither I nor you:
But when the leaves hang trembling,
The wind is passing through.
Who has seen the wind
Neither you nor I:
But when the trees bow down their heads,
The wind is passing by.
Read the short poem again and think over the question.
Why does the author use “Neither you nor I” instead of “Neither I nor you” in the second part
The purpose of this writing technique is to rhyme.
Pay attention to the rhyming word of the last sentence “The wind is passing by.” “By” rhymes with “I”.
Poetry appreciation
Background information
William Wordsworth (1770 — 1850), the British romantic poet, was a laureate poet. He is one of the most important English poets since the Renaissance movement. Wordsworth published a collection of Lyrical Ballads with Samuel Taylor Coleridge, among the first to use contemporary language in poetry.
One of his most famous poems is “Daffodils” .
I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud
By William Wordsworth
I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
延伸成无穷无尽的一行;
The waves beside them danced, but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed — and gazed — but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:
水仙的欢欣却胜过水波;
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.
那是孤独之中的福祉;
Polish your poem and hand it in.
