(满分:130分 时间:120分钟)

It was a week after my mom had passed away and I didn’t know how to go on with life. So when I received an email from a friend about a race benefiting cancer research, I ignored it. It seemed to prick my heart, as cancer was the disease that had taken my mother away from me.
But something about my friend’s words-“I can help organize the whole thing”-stuck with me. I felt obliged (有义务的) to agree. In the weeks to come, I managed to re-enter the world of the living, I checked our team’s website daily, feeling proud each time a donation ticked up our total. I knew my mom would have wanted it that way. She was the type who never got defeated. It was this very spirit that helped me get by.
When the race ended, I noticed the runners all had one thing in common: There were big smiles on their faces. They made it look so rewarding and effort-less. I wanted in.
So I enrolled in another race two months later. Considering I could barely run a mile, it was challenging. But my friend and I made a training plan so I wouldn’t come in last. I followed it religiously and didn’t let anything get in my way.
Running up and down the city’s hills, I was flooded with memories. I had lived there after college and my mother had visited often. I passed Bloomingdale’s, recalling the time she and I had gotten into a screaming argument there.
I was about to beat myself up when I remembered what Mom had said after her diagnosis (诊断) of cancer. “I don’t want you to feel guilty about anything.” Her paper-thin hands had held me tightly. A weight lifted from my shoulders.
When the race day arrived, I gave it my all for my mom and for all she had taught me and continued to teach me. As I ran, whenever I felt like slowing down, I pictured her cheering me on. Crossing the finish line, I was filled with her love and a sense of peace.

Chinese AI Model DeepSeek-R1 Stuns (震惊) the World
January 20, 2025, a Chinese tech company named DeepSeek made a new AI called DeepSeek-R1. This smart program can solve math problems, write code (代码), and answer questions like top models such as OpenAI’s GPT-40, but it costs much less to build. The team spent only $5.58 million (1/70 of OpenAI’s cost) and used 2,048 computer chips for two months. This shows that good ideas can beat big money.
DeepSeek-R1 learns by trying many times and getting better, like how students practice maths. Other AIs need lots of prepared examples, but R1 improves by itself. For example, in a global math test, it got 79.8% right, slightly higher than OpenAI’s model. A simple version of R1 can even run on low-cost computers, helping schools and small companies.
DeepSeek-R1 is free to use and change. On its first day online, over 19,000 programmers worldwide started projects to study it. A German scientist said experiments with R1 cost $10 instead of $300 with other AIs. Even Meta (a famous U.S. tech company) top scientist said, “This kind of free AI could change the world.”
U.S. tech companies are worried. Meta plans to spend $65 billion more on AI research. Experts say China is catching up fast. A report in Nature magazine called R1 a “big step forward”, proving that smart ideas beat expensive tools.
As a DeepSeek engineer said, “We want AI to be a friend, not something only rich people can use.” With R1, China shows the world that great things come from new ideas and hard work, not just money.
5. What is the main purpose of the article
A. To compare Chinese and American AI technologies.
B. To encourage students to become programmers.
C. To explain how computer chips work.
D. To introduce a low-cost AI model from China.
6. What does the underlined “improves by itself” mean in paragraph 2
A. It needs programmers to fix mistakes. B. It copies answers from other AIs.
C. It becomes better through practice. D. It only works with expensive tools.
7. Why did Meta plan to spend more money on AI research
A. To help Chinese companies. B. Because they were worried about DeepSeek-R1.
C. To build more computer chips. D. To hire German scientists.
8. What does the writer think is the most important for success
A. Creativity and hard work. B. Having enough money.
C. Using the latest computer chips. D. Copying other countries ideas.

It’s one of the most common questions adults ask children: what do you want to be when you grow up Although childhood is supposed to be fun, kids also discuss important topics regarding their futures. Now, a new study finds that children who set big goals regarding their future status (地位) and education often set themselves up for success as they age.
The findings, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, are the first to reveal (揭示) a connection between life goal development and future success in school or the workplace. Rodica Damian, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Houston, and other researchers discovered that as children grow up, their goals naturally begin to change. However, as some childhood goals fall away, other goals related to a family stay strong. These include being close to relatives, building more friendships or finding a romantic partner, and even becoming more involved in your community or helping others.
During the study, researchers compared how their goals changed as children moved from adolescence to adulthood and how a person’s goals impacted their success in school and as an employee later on. Overall, a child’s goals focusing on their education and future status were the most consistent predictors (一致的预测因素) of income in adulthood. Simply put, when a child dreams big about doing well in school or achieving great success as an adult, these goals accurately (精准地) paint a picture of how successful these children will be. So, the message is simple: dream big and dream of success, kids! Those goals can drive you to success when you grow up!
“Our work proves a strong connection between a child’s life goals, educational achievement, and future occupational outcomes (职业结果). This information is valuable for parents and educators who can use it to encourage children to set ambitious goals. Additionally, it helps develop strategies to support individuals in achieving their goals and reaching their full potential (潜力),” Damian concludes.
9. What does the study mainly focus on
A. Why children change their dreams over time.
B. Whether early education determines future career.
C. Whether childhood goals relate to future success.
D. How childhood experiences impact a person’s choice.
10. Which of the following goals remains strong as children grow up
A. Achieving academic success. B. Connecting with others.
C. Hunting for a high-salary job D. Improving personal social status.
11. What message does the author express in paragraph 3
A. Adjusting goals can create new opportunities for success
B. Childhood achievements greatly affect future careers.
C. Educational goals may be more achievable than others.
D. Dreaming big is potentially associated with success.
12. What is the purpose of the last paragraph
A. To stress the significance of the study. B. To offer suggestions for future studies.
C. To explain the purpose of the study. D. To point out the limitations of the study.

Social media is a double-edged sword (双刃剑). It can be good or bad, depending on how people use it. Here are several ways to help one use it responsibly.
13
Social media can be a big waste of time if you spend most of your day looking through what other people post, commenting on and liking things, or looking at every message on your device. Instead, you should learn to practice some self-control and limit your usage every day. 14 Afterward, set an amount of time for your social media use, such as 10 minutes every time.
Think twice before posting something.
Materials posted on social media are often more lasting than you think. And even if your post is deleted, words and images you upload on these platforms can remain online and be difficult to remove. 15 Therefore, before posting something online, consider if it would negatively affect others. If it is, then don’t post it. 16 This can destroy your reputation or others’.
Learn to check the truth of things that you see.
Some of the things you see on social media might not necessarily be true, especially when it comes to news and information. You may immediately believe what you see and read. The danger of this behavior is that you might be spreading misinformation if you share what you have seen before checking the truth of the post. 17 Check from other sources whether what you have seen and read is true. Ask opinions from other people.
A. Follow those that matter to you.
B. Don’t let social media eat all your time.
C. And you never know where they might end up.
D. What’s more, avoid posting unprofessional photos or bad comments.
E. Social media can have a powerful impact on a person’s emotional state.
F. Just make it a practice to research the accuracy (精准) of any information or image.
G. For example, try setting specific times per day when you check your social media accounts.

One hot Saturday afternoon I was about to go into the music store on White Avenue when I saw a dog standing in front of the entrance (入口处). As I moved toward the door, it suddenly fell to the ground and lay still, whimpering (呜咽) softly.
“That dog suffers from the heat,” said a man behind me. I picked it up. It lay like a baby in my arms, looking at me with large, trusting eyes. I opened the door and walked inside. “Do you have some water I can give this dog ” I asked. The shop owner shook his head. “Just leave it alone. It doesn’t belong here. Someone will come back for it.”
I knew I had never seen the dog before, but the way it looked at me gave me a memory of the past. It needed me. I carried it to my car. As I drove I could feel it looking at me. In the comfortable silence, I drove it to my home and gave it a name — Lucy.
When we arrived home, I bathed her and dried her long, curly white fur, Then I placed an old quilt (被子) inside a box in the kitchen. Lucy seemed to know it was for her. Later in the afternoon, the children came home.
“Wow, a cute ball of fur!” they said. Lucy turned over onto her back, and my children played with her happily. “We’re glad she found us,” the children said.
However, three days later, an advertisement appeared: “Lost. One small white dog. Answers to the name of Augy. Reward.”
The address was for a traditional clothing shop. When I arrived at the shop later that evening I had an uneasy feeling. A young man greeted the dog warmly, and thanked me very much for taking such good care of her. I knew this man loved his dog. He had paid for an ad and offered a reward. I was sure I had done the right thing by bringing her back, but I was sick at heart to think that I would never meet her again.

六、读后续写
I refused the reward, and left the shop alone. The next two weeks, I could not keep Lucy out of my thoughts. Then one evening when I returned late from work, my son was waiting for me at the door. “That man phoned,” he said. It could have been anyone, yet I surprised even myself when I said, “You mean the man from the clothing shop ” My son said yes. I phoned back immediately.
The young man’s words were totally unexpected. “We have to move to an apartment and can’t take the dog. I think since you took such good care of her, you might like to keep her.” Lucy was waiting at the door when I reached the shop. She stood up to greet me and gave me a knowing look. Then I bent down to pet her softly. As people say, nothing happens by chance. Some things are just meant to be. I thought Lucy knew that all along.
