Today, more than 40 million seeds from nearly 1,000 different kinds of plants have been collected from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. We have made this achievement because of Zhong Yang, a professor of biology at Fudan University and Tibet University, who saw the value of studying plants.
Zhong spent a lot of time building a collection of seeds for China’s national seed bank. A seed bank saves plant seeds, and the seeds may have medical or agricultural value in the future. More than 80 percent of the seeds that Zhong collected were from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. However, it is difficult for people to collect seeds from the plateau. One has to deal with different kinds of difficult environments. In fact, a third of the seeds collected on the plateau were found at a height of at least 4,000 metres above sea level.
Some seeds are easy to collect, while others are more difficult. One seed that was hard to collect was from a special species of peach. In order to get 5,000 seeds, Zhong and his students started eating the peaches, lots of the peaches. “Since there is no right machine that can be used for collecting the pits (核), we have to eat the peaches, which taste awful. But this is the safest way to get the seeds,” Zhong said.
Every year, Zhong and his students walked at least 10,000 kilometres to collect seeds. To save time, Zhong and his students ate only one meal a day while travelling to the mountains. Sometimes, they even fell ill. Though they faced all these difficulties, they kept going on. Zhong spent countless hours collecting seeds in Xizang. Bassanio was a young man who had fallen in love with Portia, a rich girl. However, Portia’s father, before his death, set a challenge for any suitor (求婚者) wishing to marry her. He left three boxes—one made of gold, one of silver, and one of lead. Each box had an inscription (题词), and only the one who chose the correct box would be able to marry Portia.

People always agree with those who speak well, even if they say foolish things. Many people who seem brave are really cowards (懦夫). “No, I do not want these beautiful boxes of gold and silver. I will choose the lead box with its ordinary colour. Please give me the key to the lead box. Let happiness be mine,” Bassanio said.
One of the servants gave him the key. Then he went to the box and opened it. Portia was very pleased. She could not believe it until Bassanio opened the box and saw the picture of Portia inside it. When he saw the picture, he loved her even more because the picture was very beautiful.
He wondered how anyone could paint such a good picture of her. He looked at all the parts of the picture. All of them were perfect. Of course, Portia herself was far more beautiful than her picture. The writing inside the box told him that he had chosen the right box. It said that he should go to Portia and hug her. She would be his wife. Bassanio could not believe it.

Hello, everyone!
As a member of the school’s Science and Technology Club, I’d like to share my thoughts on AI tools.
AI in Schools brings both opportunities and challenges. On the one hand, AI tools can help us learn efficiently. For example, they provide personalized exercises and instant feedback. They also save time by automating tasks like checking homework. However, over-reliance on AI may weaken our critical thinking. Some students copy answers directly instead of solving problems themselves. Moreover, privacy issues could arise if AI collects too much personal date.
Let’s use AI wisely! We should treat it as a helper, not a replacement. Balance technology with independent learning, and always protect our personal information.
Thank you!
