2025 “Chinese Bridge” Competition for Eastern United States Region
To provide a platform for young Chinese language learners in the United States to show their Chinese skills and talents, arouse (激发) their interest and enthusiasm, and promote Chinese language education in the U. S., the 2025 “Chinese Bridge” Competition in the Eastern United States Region is officially launched (启动). This event is organized by the Chinese Consulate General in New York and hosted by China Institute in America.Eligibility (参赛对象)
Elementary school students, secondary school students or college students. They must be U. S. citizens (公民) and have a native language other than Chinese.
Students who attended the 2024 final “Chinese Bridge” global competition in China can’t take part in petition Format and Awards (比赛方式及奖励)
* This year’s competition consists of two rounds: the preliminaries (预赛) and finals. It is divided into three groups: elementary school students, secondary school students, and college students, each with their own preliminary rounds and finals.
* Applicants to the preliminary round must complete the information form and submit (提交) their videos online, and the final round will be held in-person at China Institute in America.
* All preliminary and final rounds participants will receive a participation certificate (证书). The first prize winners from each group will have the chance to take part in the 2025“Chinese Bridge” global final competition in China.

An elephant and a crocodile were once standing beside the river. They were disputing which was the better animal.
“Look at my strength,” said the elephant. “I can pull up a tree, roots and all with my trunk”
“Ah! But your skin is not nearly so thick as mine,” replied the crocodile. “No knife or tooth can cut through it.”
Just as they were coming to blows, a lion happened to pass.
“My dear friends!” said the King of all animals, going up to them. “Let me know the cause of your disagreement.”

“Yes!” replied the beasts.
“Well, then,” continued the lion, “go and get it, and bring it to me, and I shall be able then to decide between you.”
Upon hearing this, off they started. The crocodile, being used to the water, reached the opposite side of the river first, and was soon standing beside the wall.
Here he waited till the elephant came up. The elephant, seeing that the crocodile had no way of reaching their goal, raised his long trunk, and took down the hat quite easily.
They then made their way together back again across the river. The elephant was trying to keep up with the fast-moving crocodile in the water and became careless. When he was forced to turn sharply to avoid a floating tree branch, the elephant dropped the hat and it fell to the river bottom. The crocodile noticed the accident, so down he dived, and brought it up in his huge mouth. They then returned, and the crocodile laid the metal hat at the lion’s feet. The King took it up, and turning to the elephant, said:
“You, because of your size and trunk, were able to reach the hat on the wall but, having lost it, you were unable to get it back. And you,” said the lion to the crocodile, “although unable to reach the hat, were able to dive for it and save it. You are both wise and able in your own ways. One is no better than the other.”

It is like a scene from a horror film: a spider web is several meters wide, which is home to thousands of spiders. And that was what Jason G. Goldman, an animal behavior researcher, found along a muddy path in the Peruvian Amazon jungle — the web arched from tree to tree, a structure containing too many spiders to count. They appeared to function as a society, just like ants or bees.
Anelosimus eximius, the species Goldman met in the rainforest, is not the only kind of social spiders in the world, but it does construct the biggest webs. Some can reach more than 7.6m long and 1.5m wide. A web of that size could contain as many as 50,000 individual spiders.
Anelosimus eximius was first discovered more than a century ago by a French scientist named Eugene Simon. More social spiders have been discovered since. One was found as recently as 2006.
An Anelosimus eximius colony (群体) contains adult males and females as well as youngsters, but the majority of spiders on the web are females. Males account for only between 5% and 22% of any colony’s population. Social spiders work together to build, maintain and clean their webs. They work together to catch prey (猎物), and dine together when they trap a large feast. The females work together to care for the young in the colony. They feed their youngsters by vomiting (吐出) up food for them, just like mother birds.
Why did these spiders become social Researchers have discovered three ecological (生态的) elements that often lead to cooperative (合作的) living among spiders.
Social spiders tend to feed on bigger prey, for one thing. Spiders living in places where it is difficult to hunt large or more profitable prey alone may eventually figure out that it is in their interest to work together.
