Body language is an important way of communication. According to one study,
words show only 7% of a person's message but body language shows 55%. So when studying about a foreign culture, it is important to pay attention to how people use body language.
● Gesture It is a major form of body language communication. When people of New Zealand stick out their tongue(伸出舌头) at someone, it is a kind of respect. When American schoolchildren make the same gesture, it means just the opposite. Also, Americans often describe “OK” with their thumb and forefinger(食指) touching to form a circle. The same gesture means "money”to the Japanese, "zero” to the French and a bad way to Brazilians. For that reason, people in a foreign culture must use gestures correctly.
●Distance When someone comes too close, he will feel uncomfortable. When he touches a stranger, he will feel sorry. But the distance of a person's "comfortable space” depends on his culture. For example, in daily conversation, many Americans stand about one metre away. People in Latin or Arab cultures, however, stand very close to each other and touch each other often.
●Expression When talking, polite people show the feelings of being excited, glad, surprised or sad. People with no expression on the face are not welcomed. Americans talk with nodding, smiling politely and keeping good eye contact. Some cultures think eye contact impolite, but Americans think it honest.

The 108 volunteers have already made a big difference in the community. They have paired off with 71 elderly people to learn about their daily needs and offer a helping hand.
In these years, the community has come up with many ideas. At first, they started a project called “Knocking on the Door” and hoped the elderly would connect the leaders often. However, the community did not have enough workers to support so many elderly people. So, the idea of “Shared Children” came out.

By March, the number of the volunteers in the team had reached 108. Their work has also included buying things, providing spiritual comfort(精神安抚), helping dealing with health problems and other duties.

He often helps to repair something in elderly people’s homes and buys them fruits and vegetables, as well as carrying heavy things, like rice bags, upstairs. Liu Chunyan, 41, is also among the volunteers. “Many elderly people now live alone and feel lonely, so we should be there and chat with them more often.” Liu says.
