A non-profit group in Greece uses mini horses to provide pet treatment to sick and disabled (残疾的) people. The animals are brought to hospitals and care centers to give joy to the sick or those suffering physical limits (限制).
The horses are raised as tiny animals and stand about 72 centimeters tall. They are specially trained to provide comfort to disabled children, sick people, or older adults. The horses must complete at least two years of training. They are taught how to work in limited environments with children and adults with special health needs. Caregivers say the horses provide a form of pet treatment that offers valuable social interactions and new learning experiences.
But the leader of the Greek organization says her group has been struggling with money difficulty in recent years. The organization is run by 68-year-old Mina Karagianni. She now performs most of the group’s duties herself. Karagianni also provides money for the group and cares for the nine tiny horses, mostly by herself.
Karagianni learned about the Florida-based organization over the Internet while she was searching for information on a short horse she had rescued. After learning about its activities, she got the idea to start her own operation.
“I was touched and said, ‘OK, we have to bring this to Greece,’” Karagianni said. So, she decided to make changes to her land to be able to care for the horses. She said she turned her land into what she called a “Magic Garden.” She has everything that is needed to care for the horses. She also runs a small restaurant and party area.
Karagianni created her Greek group in 2014. She said the organization has served about 12,000 children.
Karagianni said she had contacted businesses and charities (慈善机构) about money help but has not been successful. She plans to continue to seek help. She added she would keep going because she saw the great benefits the children and adults receive from the animals.
7.What is the problem with the Greek organization

C. It has limited areas to train horses. D. It has little attraction for patients.
8.What inspired Karagianni to start the organization

About 7 years ago, at the age of 16, I was doing an unpaid job at an aquarium (水族馆). It was amazing because I loved the ocean and still do. I wanted to be a sea scientist, so it was extra special for me.
The other teens working there were nice; we were all there because we wanted to be. I don’t remember having any problems with coworkers at that time and was just enjoying getting to talk about my favorite things for part of the day.
Eventually “Shark Week” rolled around. I was excited because I love sharks. I think they’re wonderful creatures and swimming with sharks is still on my wish list. Obviously, everyone else wanted to work the shark week too as the schedule filled up fast.
I had one shift (轮班) during the shark week. I was dropped off at the aquarium in the morning, ready to talk happily about sharks for the next few hours. I went to my station with a coworker and then I started feeling sick.
I started trembling (颤抖) a bit. I felt warm, then my stomach started shaking and I could not see things clearly. Obviously, my face was very pale and my coworker noticed I was about to fall down. She was able to walk me to one of the worker-only doors before having to go back to her station. I made my way slowly to the office and explained the situation — I needed to go home.
I wanted to cry. That was my only shift during the shark week and I had to miss it. And on top of that, I had to take the bus home. Normally I didn’t mind taking the bus home, but my bus stop was up a very steep (陡峭的) city hill. It’s quite a climb even if you aren’t sick. But I still struggled to do it. But by the time I reached the cupcake shop halfway up the hill, I couldn’t climb any further.

Most teenagers spend their time playing video games or texting, but William Gadoury, a 14-year-old from Canada, had a very different interest. In 2016, he studied ancient Mayan star maps and used satellite images to explore a connection between Mayan cities and stars.
William had been interested in the Mayans since he was a child, especially after learning about their calendar and its prediction. What started as a hobby when he was 12 turned into serious research. Using an old Mayan book, the Madrid Codex, he studied 22 star maps and compared them with Google Earth images of the Yucatan Peninsula. He found that 117 Mayan cities lined up with the stars in the maps.
But when he studied a 23rd star map, William noticed something strange. There were three stars in the constellation (星座), but only two known cities. The third star pointed to a jungle area near the Mexico-Belize border.
Thanks to a science competition he had won earlier, William got help from the Canadian Space Agency. Using images from their satellite, he saw what looked like a square structure hidden in the jungle. By looking at more satellite images from NASA and Japan’s Space Agency, he confirmed that there might be an unknown city there.
In 2022, William joined archaeologist Francisco Estrada-Bell to visit the site. They found a small farming village deep in the jungle. Experts believe this discovery shows how farming was the backbone of the Maya civilization, allowing them to feed their large population, which may have been in the millions.
“What I admired most about William was his curiosity,” Francisco told CBC. “I think that he showed a lot of curiosity as well as imagination. And I think imagination is really important in science, because if you can’t imagine it — if you can’t think of it — you can’t look for it.” Now 21, William has spent half his life studying Mayan constellations — and he’s just getting started.
7.What made William Gadoury different from most teenagers
A. He collected satellite images. B. He refused to use mobile phones.
C. He studied Mayan constellations. D. He was lost in playing video games.
8.What did William Gadoury discover about Mayan cities and stars
A. Cities should match star positions. B. Stars guided city planning.
C. Stars brightened the cities’ buildings. D. Cities were shaped like stars.
9.What does the underlined words “the backbone” in Para. 5 probably mean
A. The strong teamwork. B. The power tool of the locals.
C. The challenging experience. D. The main support or foundation.
10.Which words can best describe William Gadoury
A. Curious and determined. B. Imaginative and friendly.
C. Generous and confident. D. Hardworking and carefree.
How is eating in space different from eating on Earth
If you send astronauts into space, you have to send along food as well. But what do astronauts eat, and how do they eat it Scientists take several factors into consideration as they plan meals for space.
First, and possibly most important, is nutrition (营养). ①______ Providing junk food to eat, such as potato chips, sodas, and pizza, would make the astronauts unhealthy.
②______ If the food that has been provided is distasteful, then the astronauts may avoid eating it. If you’ve ever tried to concentrate on something important while your stomach doesn’t feel well, you’ll know why the scientists in charge of a space mission (task) want their astronauts to eat regularly.
The lack (缺少) of gravity (pull) in a spacecraft also determines what foods can or cannot be eaten in space. Meals must be packaged carefully so they won’t spill (洒落/溢出) into the cabin (one of the areas inside a spacecraft). Water or tiny bits of food could get inside a machine or electronic device and damage it. ③______ A loose knife bouncing (弹起) around inside the cabin would be dangerous.
④______ The weight of every object included in a spacecraft must be calculated (计算) in order to ensure that there is enough fuel and power to carry the craft safely into space and back home again. ⑤______ Most foods are stored in plastic bags, and often, the foods are dehydrated (使脱水). When an astronaut is ready to eat, hot water is added to the meal and warm it up.
Despite all these requirements, much of the food eaten in space is actually similar to what you might eat on any given day.
A. Taste is also important.
B. Finally, weight is an important concern.
C. Food packaging is made to be as light as possible.
D. Believe it or not, they also have fresh fruits and vegetables.
E. Nutrition and practicality (实用) are important things to consider.
F. For the same reason, sharp knives and folks are never used on board.
G. Keeping astronauts’ physical health is a top task for any space mission.

After we returned to live in beautiful, sunny Italy from Germany, something funny happened between us and our neighbor, and thus started our unforgettable friendship.
Moving my family from Germany to Italy wasn’t easy, especially with our cat and dog. We settled where we had been living once before, in the town of Aviano, Italy. I had been teaching there years ago and was now returning as a psychology professor in a university. We loved the town because it was like stepping back in time 100 years. Everything seemed old-fashioned.
Because it’s a small town, everyone knows everyone, and gossip circulates fast. We knew we’d score good points for bringing an aging grandma with us since older people are respected in Italy. However, we knew that we would have to be careful not to let our pets out into the public too much. Many people still kept gardens and didn’t appreciate cats and dogs getting into their yards and digging up their vegetables.
We let our pets out a few hours at a time to get used to the area, but our cat Vicky was an immediate cause for concern. Vicky was attracted to human wear and would pick up whatever she could carry and bring it home. One sunny morning, our next-door neighbor was hanging out her laundry As soon as the woman finished and went indoors, Vicky climbed up the steps to the clothesline and caught the only thing she could reach. She went home proudly showing us her prize. It was a lovely children’s dress with attractive laces.
My husband took it from the cat and noted that she was careful not to get it dirtied. I decided to come back to the neighbor’s place and hang it back up.
So, I went back to the neighbor’s place while my husband was upstairs at our place to give warnings if he saw any movement. I was hanging up the dress when the neighbor’s door opened and the woman went out.

1.答案:to prevent

3.答案:to raise
故填 to raise。
4.答案:on
5.答案:on/upon
故填on。
6.答案:to explore

根据第一段“Most teenagers spend their time playing video games or texting, but William Gadoury, a 14-year-old from Canada, had a very different interest. In 2016, he studied ancient Mayan star maps and used satellite images to explore a connection between Mayan cities and stars.(大多数青少年把时间花在玩电子游戏或发短信上,但来自加拿大的14岁少年威廉 加多里却有着截然不同的兴趣。2016年,他研究了古代玛雅星图,并利用卫星图像探索玛雅城市与星星之间的联系。)”可知,使威廉 加多里与大多数青少年不同的是他研究玛雅星座。故选C。
8.答案:A
根据第二段“He found that 117 Mayan cities lined up with the stars in the maps.(他发现 117 座玛雅城市与星图中的星星排列一致。)” 故选A。

答案:
The Sport I Like Most
As the saying goes, “Life lies in movement.” Among various sports, I have a strong preference for volleyball.
You cannot imagine how weak I was before junior high school when I would often catch a cold and easily become out of breath. Then I took up volleyball, from which I have gained plenty of benefits. Through daily training, not only does it help build up my strength and develop my character, but it also makes me aware of the importance of team spirit. Besides, by cooperating with my teammates, I make more friends.
All in all, volleyball gives me a body full of strength and a mind crazy about sports. Let’s enjoy the pleasure and benefits of sports together!
Paragraph 1:
It all happened so fast that there was no way for me to turn and run away. Looking up at the confused look on the woman’s face, I felt embarrassed. However, I soon calmed down and told her everything about it, saying that we were her next-door neighbor. I went on to say that our naughty cat had stolen in and took her children’s dress. Just at this moment, Vicky came running to me and lay behind my feet, seemingly knowing that she had done something wrong.
Paragraph 2:
Hearing my explanation, the woman laughed heartily. Then she invited me to sit down for a chat. The next moment saw the two of us talking about our life, our families and everything else. Sensing that I had taken up too much of her time, I rose to my feet and before I left, I apologized to her again and invited her and her family to our house. Since then, we became good friends. Looking back, I realized that it was my honesty and respect to others that eased my embarrassment.

On the one hand, learning very bad, highly immoral (不道德) information about someone usually has a stronger influence than learning very good, highly moral information. This is because immoral behaviors can better show a person’s true character.
On the other hand, when forming and updating our opinions about others, people tend to give more importance to behaviors that are seen as less common. When thinking about others’ actions, certain areas in the brain will become active. This brain activity is connected to how often people think these behaviors happen in daily life. In other words, the brain tries to decide if the person’s behavior is common or unusual. There’s a good meaning in this data: your brain, and you, might care more about the very bad, immoral things another person has done compared (比较) to the very good, moral things, but it’s a direct result of the comparative rareness of those bad behaviors.
In the situation with the rude-football-fan-turned-good-person, your brain says, “Well, in my experience, pretty much anyone would lend someone their umbrella, but the way this guy acted at the football game, that was unusual.” And so, you decide to go with your first impression.
Think about the last time you judged someone based on their behavior, especially a time when you really feel like you changed your mind about someone. Was the behavior that caused you to update your impression something you’d expect anyone to do, or was it something totally out of the ordinary
7.What does the underlined words “write him off” mean in paragraph 1

C. They could form lasting impressions.

A. Noisy. B. Impolite. C. Kind. D. Careful.
10.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text

Last night, I was trying to go to a store to buy a couple bottles of water and some food because the weather report said it was supposed to snow more heavily than the last time. I had to prepare some necessities for daily use in advance.
The store is three miles from my house. Right when I was about to turn on the road, my car said overheating, my engine locked up and the car shut off. My husband and I got out of the car, trying to push the car into a nearby repair shop. But it was too hard for us to push the car.
At first three different people asked us if we were okay and when we said no, they just drove off. It was like they just wanted to know if we needed help but not actually help.
Finally, a man calling himself David stopped his car and helped us push our car into the nearby repair shop. And then he asked if we were going to the store because he had to go into the store and at least inside we could get warm. We agreed, because we were going to the store, and so he took us to the store.
When we got inside the store, I realized this man was walking with a stick but it didn’t stop him from offering to help strangers, like us, trying to push a car through snow. We were so moved by his kind act that we helped him with his shopping, considering that he was disabled. We also bought what we needed. After that, we went to the checkouts together, and I paid the bill for David. He was very thankful. David knew that our car broke down and that we couldn’t drive, so he offered to drive us home. Soon, we arrived at our house. We thanked David again. Then he drove away.

In 2014, Mahoney was asked to choose a person who regularly gave back to the Halifax community to perform an act of kindness as part of a Facebook challenge. Mahoney chose a 79-ycar-old senior named Eleanor, who not only gave goods to the people at the pub where Mahoney worked but also volunteered at the local homeless shelter.
Mahoney wanted to get to know Eleanor better, so she asked that they spend a day together—picking up fruits, getting their nails done, that kind of thing. “It was the first time in years that someone had made a day about her,” says the 30-year-old. “That focus made her shine.”
Their shared experience got Mahoney thinking. How many other seniors might benefit from that kind of attention And had some of those seniors delayed their dreams because they’d been busy caring for others Chisholm, now 31, was equally interested in these questions, and together the pair set up their new charity: We Are Young (WAY).
WAY has since delivered on 38 dreams — from a helicopter trip over a childhood blueberry-picking place to travelling to Toronto to watch a Blue Jays game. These dreams are to work out problems caused by the health and loneliness of seniors. 78-year-old Victor wanted to go to the beach — a dream he'd given up when it had become too physically difficult to reach the sea. The team at WAY offered a boat for him and his son in the fall of 2021 so they could reach the sea and spend the day enjoying themselves on the beach.
“If you lose the sense of purpose that having a passion (激情) can give you, your self-confidence goes down,” says Mahoney. “Now, Victor has got some of his self-confidence again — and his sense of humour. We want to show that anything is possible with the support of others.” “We want to create a movement that changes our whole society’s opinion and support for seniors,” says Mahoney. “That is the influence we're trying to create.”

Since childhood, Ellie had always been the shyest girl in her class. She preferred to stay in the background, rarely speaking up and avoiding attention at all costs. She admired those who could confidently share their thoughts, yet never believed she could be one of them.
She had a special way to show her sorrows and pleasures with her magical paintbrush. Whenever she held a paintbrush in her hand, she was lost in the world of her own creation. Animals, people and scenes were then brought to life on her canvas (画布). Her lifelike artworks won many painting awards and most of them were exhibited in her school many times.
However, things changed that summer. Her family moved to another city since her father got a promising job there. Ellie struggled to keep up with the lessons, and she sat alone in a corner of the classroom, not daring to approach any of the groups of chatting students.
One day, the class was assigned a group project in wildlife protection, and each group needed to create a poster. Ellie’s group quickly made an agreement, but she was left an unimportant role to hold the poster when her group leader — Alma gave a presentation. She wanted to contribute more, but her shyness held her back from expressing her ideas. The fear of being rejected or ignored made her keep silent.
The next day, Ellie’s schoolbag dropped on the floor, and her notebook with cute little illustrations drew students’ eyes. Everyone in the class wanted to have a look at her notebook. Alma shouted loudly, “Ellie, you can draw some wild animals on our poster.” Other members agreed, and Ellie nodded with a shy face.
A few weeks later, Ellie showed her poster to her group members, who were amazed at the running animals and gave their pure-hearted admiration.

Alma and the other group members listened attentively, and their surprised expressions turned into admiration.
Paragraph 2:

It may seem as if Mother’s Day had been created by a company named Hallmark, but people have been taking time on the calendar to give a shout-out to moms for a long time. The Greeks and Romans had mother goddess festivals — although their celebrations didn’t involve the menfolk taking their underappreciated mothers out to dinner. A more recent tradition was Mothering Sunday, which developed in the British Isles during the 16th century. On the fourth Sunday in April, young men and women who were living and working apart from their families were advised to return to their mothers’ houses.
Mother’s Day that is observed in the United States started in the 1850s with Ann Jarvis, a West Virginian woman who established “Mothers’ Work Days” to promote health and hygiene (卫生) at home and in the workplace. During the Civil War, Jarvis organized women to improve sanitary conditions for soldiers on both sides, and after the war she became a peacemaker, furthering the cause by bringing together the mothers of the soldiers of the Union and the Confederacy and promoting a Mother’s Day holiday.
Jarvis’s work inspired another 19th-century woman, Julia Ward Howe. In 1870 Howe published her “Mother’s Day Proclamation(宣言)”, which imagined the day not as a time for appreciation of mothers by their children but as an opportunity for women to exercise their collective power over peace. Howe started holding the annual Mother’s Day celebration in Boston, her hometown, but after about a decade she stopped footing the bill and the tradition faded away.
It was Jarvis’s daughter Anna who succeeded in getting Mother's Day recognized as a national holiday. After her mother died, in May 1906, Anna started holding yearly ceremonies on the anniversary and conducting a tireless PR campaign to make the day a holiday. In 1908 she succeeded in getting the support of John Wanamaker, the Philadelphia department store magnate (巨头) and advertising pioneer, and by 1912 West Virginia and a few other states had adopted Mother's Day. Two years later, President Woodrow Wilson signed a resolution (决议) declaring the second Sunday in May a national holiday.
It wasn’t long, though, before whatever ideals the day was supposed to celebrate were buried under a large number of greeting cards and candies. By the 1920s Anna Jarvis was campaigning against the holiday she had been instrumental in creating. “I wanted it to be a day of emotionalism, not profit,” she said.

The Fallas Festival is now one of the most popular festivals in Spain. ③______ Today, 350 communities that make up Valencia work together to design and make two sculptures. These larger-than-life sculptures, often several metres high, are still made of wood, but also include cardboard. On the 15th of March, the sculptures are paraded around the city.
④______ These will not be burnt at the end of the festival. They are, instead, saved and placed in the local museum, which is open throughout the year. During the festival, there are lots of different community activities. Every activity ends with fireworks being let off during both the day and night.
The Fallas Festival always brings communities together. On the final night, all the sculptures are collected and put on a bonfire (大火堆) in the main Valencia square. The fire is lit and all the year’s hard work comes to an end in towers of flames. ⑤______

The frightening day of our diving test was here. Our parents thought we were lucky to have an Olympic-size swimming pool at the school. My mom stressed that the swimming pool was one of the best in our city. But I didn’t feel happy about it at all. Instead, I felt afraid of the swimming pool. It was mainly because I was terribly shy.
I was so shy that I always sat at the back of the room in class so I’d not be called upon to read. As for the present physical education class each Monday morning, I would work my way to the back of the line forming at the diving board so I would not have to practice the dives.
Now, it was another Monday morning - the morning of our diving test. My blood ran cold when the teacher Ms. Robbins announced that we would be graded for our final on the most difficult dive- the jackknife. And she added, “This diving test is important. The one who fails has to spare time in the following Monday mornings to practice diving in this swimming pool and attend this test again.”
My body kept shaking with fear as the line to the scary diving board shortened. As I watched, each student seemed to perform the challenging dive effortlessly. And shortly I would have to attempt something that I had never even practiced before.
Then I remembered someone telling me that when you picture yourself doing a skill over and over, it’s just as effective as physically practicing that skill. So I watched carefully as each classmate jumped at the end of the board once, added a jump for height, folded their body in half to reach for their toes, and finally straightened out like an arrow for going into the water. After carefully watching for a while, I was actually in a state of surprise, because all of a sudden I realized that it was possible for me to perform these four steps of diving.
Eventually all classmates except me finished jumping. The teacher announced that it was my turn.

Scientists have already established from multiple studies that Mars contains large amounts of water. Most of the water exists in the form of ice. Chinese researchers say they have built an artificial intelligence(AI) robot that can use materials found on Mars to produce catalysts (催化剂) to break down water and release oxygen. It could be another way for space travelers in the future to make much-needed oxygen on Mars.
Experiments were carried out on meteorites that either came from Mars or contained materials similar to the Martian surface. The “robot chemist” first used an acid and chemical mixture to separate and examine materials contained in the meteorites. It identified several different metallic elements and then worked to identify different molecules (分子) that could be produced from meteorite materials. The system found more than 3.7 million possible molecule combinations. The robot used that data to predict which catalysts would be able to split water molecules to produce oxygen. The catalyst chosen as the best fit was able to operate at minus 37 degrees Celsius. This temperature is similar to current conditions on Mars.
The study’s lead writer, Jun Jiang, said that as a boy, he often dreamed of being able to one day travel in space. “So when we finally saw that the catalysts made by the robot could actually produce oxygen by splitting water molecules. I felt like my dream was coming true. I even started to imagine that I, myself, will live on Mars in the future.”
A report explaining the study’s results notes Jiang suggests that for every square meter of Martian material, his group’s system could produce nearly 60 grams of oxygen per hour. The researchers say this level of production could remove the need for future astronauts to transport oxygen from Earth. “The robot can work continuously for years.” Jiang said.
Jiang said, “It could also be used to produce other useful catalysts on Mars. This could include processes for making substances to support the growth of plants that could be used to produce food for astronauts. Different chemicals can be made by this robot. Mars might also not be the only place where it could find other used, suggesting the moon as another possibility.”
7.What do Chinese scientists use AI robots to do in the research
A. To collect water data from Mars.
B. To produce oxygen from water on Mars.
C. To explore the ice coverage on Mars.
D. To assist humans in settling down on Mars.
8.Which aspect of the research does Paragraph 2 focus on
A. Its process. B. Its scale. C. Its result. D. Its effect.
9.Why does the author mention Jiang’s dream
A. To explain the chemical reaction. B. To advocate space travel.
C. To prove the success of the study. D. To show the future life on Mars.
10.What does Jiang stress in the last paragraph
A. The substances for growing plants on Mars.
B. The existence of oxygen on the moon.
C. The possible discovery of chemicals on Mars.
D. The potential application of AI robots.
Future astronauts could potentially rely on food made from bacteria (细菌) that feed on minor planets, to produce a kind of yogurt. While astronauts on the International Space Station have experimented with growing salad leaves, the vast majority of food consumed in space is transported from Earth. ①______ That’s why Joshua Pearce at Western University in Ontario, Canada, decided to try using bacteria to change carbon-containing (含碳的) material from minor planets into eatable food.
This process has not been carried out yet on real minor planets. But Pearce’s team has performed similar experiments using bacteria to break down plastic from leftover in army food supply bags.②______ The collective bacteria end up looking something like a brown milkshake and the team has also experimented with drying out this material to produce something like yogurt or even a powder.
③______ “We did a nutritional (营养) research and it turned out to be almost a perfect food,” he says. “It turned out that the bacteria mixture that we were using, more or less, has a third each for the three major nutrients people need.”
If the idea is sound, a 500-metre-wide minor planet similar to Bennu, which NASA visited in 2020, could feed between 600 and 17,000 astronauts for a year, says Pearce. ④______
A fully working minor planets food project would require an “industrial-sized smart machine” in space. This would take a long time to get everything in place. ⑤______ They plan to start off with coal and then moving to space rocks that have fallen to Earth.
A. It would be impossible for more distant, longer-lasting tasks.
B. So the researchers hope to test the idea on a lower level in the coming year.
C. Future astronauts could soon enjoy a nutritionally perfect diet made from bacteria.
D. While that might not sound delicious, Pearce says the bacteria are well-suited for human needs.
E. They heated the plastic without oxygen and then fed this to a mixture of bacteria that eat carbon.
F. Although there is certainly hope, it is still a very futuristic idea that needs to be thought through.
G. The exact number depends on how effectively the bacteria can break down the minor planet’s carbon materials.

Mitzvah
Mitzvah is a word my grandmother often said to me since my childhood. It’s a Hebrew word that means “to do a good deed”. But according to my grandmother, it also had another meaning. This was the one she was always pointing out to me because she’d noticed how shy I was about letting people do things for me. “Linda, it’s a blessing to do a mitzvah for someone else, but sometimes it’s a blessing to let another person do something for you.” I never really understood what she meant until recently.
It was three months ago, and I’d just moved into an apartment for college in Brooklyn, New York, Several of my friends had offered to help me settle in after the moving men left, but I'd said I could manage. Letting them help did not fit my image of myself as a capable and independent woman of 21.
As December arrived, getting to school became more difficult. One day, snowflakes had been falling past my window for several hours when it came time to leave for class. I put on two sweaters, a coat, a wool hat and boots making for the bus stop. In this December storm it was a hard journey. As I tied around my neck the blue scarf that Grandma had knitted (编织) for me, I could almost hear her voice: “Why don’t you see if you can find a lift ” A thousand reasons came into my mind: I don’t know my neighbours; I feel funny asking for favours. Pride (自尊心) would not let me ask even though I came across three neighbours at the door of the apartment building. One of them was the woman living upstairs, and in her hand there was an obvious car key.
Result An hour of waiting in the bitter cold before the bus finally arrived followed by another half-hou journey. When I sneaked into the classroom, the class was almost over. If only I had taken the chance and asked for help! It would have been a 10-minute ride by car, Grandma would be shaking her head at my stubbornness (固执).

Paragraph 1:
On the day of my final exam, I again walked to the bus stop through heavy snow. For an hour, I stretched my neck, praying desperately that a bus would come. Then I gave up. The wind at my back pushed me toward home, and I prayed, “how can I get to school What should I do ” As I pulled Grandma’s scarf more tightly around my neck, again I seemed to hear that whisper: Ask someone for a lift! It could be a mitzvah. That idea had never really made sense to me. And even if I wanted to ask someone for a good deed, which I did not, there wasn’t a soul on the street.
Paragraph 2:
As I pushed open the door of my apartment building, I found myself face to face with the woman from upstairs. She was going out with a set of keys in her hand. In that split second, desperation overcame pride. I blurted, “Could you possibly give me a lift ” I hurriedly explained, “I’ve been waiting for the bus for ages, and I don’t want to miss my final exam.” Her expression softened with understanding, “Of course, I’ll give you a lift.” Heaving a sigh of relief, I couldn’t help but marvel at how a simple act of asking for help had changed everything. It was at that moment that I finally understood what “Mitzvah” really meant.Unit 5 The Value of Money—高一英语人教版(2019)必修三

Children may not be putting coins in piggy banks for much longer. With the move towards a cashless society, pocket money is going digital.
To reflect “the change”, many mobile budgeting (预算) apps for children have appeared worldwide, such as GoHenry, Osper and Gimi. These apps offer a simple money management service to children, often for a monthly fee paid by parents. Parents can add money to children's accounts, set limits and monitor transactions (交易). Children can choose to save their money or spend it using a prepaid card.
These apps aim to teach young children financial concepts (概念), such as budgeting, interest rates and income. For example, the Swedish app Gimi — 1.2 million users globally — has virtual savings jars where children can deposit money. Parents can pay children interest as they save. There is also a prepaid card that is currently available in Sweden only, but is expected to be launched elsewhere in Europe.
Philip Haglund, CEO of Gimi, believes the app can teach children responsible spending habits. “You won’t become better at money management just because you have a degree in economics. It’s more about the attitude and the relationship you have with parents’ money when you’re 6 to 12 years old,” he says.
But Catherine Winter, Managing Director of Financial Capability at The London Institute of Banking & Finance, warns people that while digital tools can help, there needs to be a more organized approach to financial education. “The area should have regular, designed classroom time and ideally should be taught as an independent subject,” she says. “Children would then have the right understanding to get the most out of both the apps and their money.”
7.What do we know about Gimi

The other day I was travelling to San Antonio by train to visit my sister. The train was a little crowded and there was a young man sitting next to the window. Since it was a hot day, I wanted that window seat more than anything else at that time. As a young lady, I thought the young man would give me the seat if I asked him. So I smiled at him and asked whether he could give up his seat and take another one. To my surprise, he said that he needed that seat and refused my request. I had no choice but to take the seat next to him.
The train was crossing station after station. The weather was so hot that the scenery outside the window could not attract my interest. I had nothing to do, so I started to focus my attention on the young man and stare at him up and down. He wore a blue shirt and there was a shawl (披巾) on his legs. He did not even rise from his seat once, which made me feel a little bit strange. Moreover, only a madman would use a shawl in such hot weather, I thought.
After the five-hour long journey, the train arrived at the final stop. I picked up my bag and stood up, waiting for the door to open. I gave a neglectful (漫不经心的) look at the young man and asked, “The train has arrived at the final station. Are you not getting off ” Hearing my words, he began to smile at me and said in a calm voice, “Someone has to come for me and take me off the train because I can't do it by myself.” I gave my full attention to his legs, only to find there was nothing under that shawl!

2.答案:would buy
故填would buy。
3.答案:to go
故填to go。
4.答案:may/might
故填may/might。

It helps to keep your savings separate from the rest of your money, so that you don't accidentally spend it. Most people choose to save their money in a savings account, as this gives them an opportunity to earn interest.
故选A。

One thing that sets humans apart from other members of the animal kingdom is our tendency to develop customs and traditions. Here are some diverse customs from around the world.
An odd custom associated with the United States is its complicated tipping culture. Unlike many other countries that don't tip at all or that only tip in small amounts when the food is particularly good, tipping is actually mandatory at most restaurants in the US. In other words, customers have a duty to leave between 10 and 20 percent of the bill as a tip. Waitstaff rely on these tips earning a living because legal wages for waiters are low. Furthermore, there are rules for tipping bartenders (酒吧侍者), delivery people and other service personnel. While some criticize this practice for being unreasonable, there’s no doubt that tipping culture in the US encourages waiters and waitresses to provide better service.
Some countries find the act of pointing with the index finger (食指) to be rude. While members of most cultures would probably agree that pointing with fingers, both literally and figuratively, isn't exactly the mildest thing in the world, in countries like Malaysia and Indonesia, this gesture can be seen as incredibly offensive. Instead, it is common to gesture towards things with the thumb as this is seen as a more polite option. In many countries in Africa, pointing is reserved for objects that have no life only, not people.
Most societies around the world have rules about table manners. For Western culture, noisily consuming food is considered rude. In Japan, however, making slurping (喷喷响的) sounds while eating has an entirely different meaning. This might have something to do with the fact that in Western countries, noodles are properly consumed by twirling (缠绕) them around the fork before putting them in the mouth. Meanwhile, the Japanese simply slurp their noodles without twirling them first, an act that is naturally noisier than the former. Making slurping sounds when eating noodles in Japan is a way of indicating that you’re really enjoying them. Some scientists even argue that slurping invites air into the mouth and actually enhances the noodles’ flavor.
7.What does the underlined word “mandatory” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Required by tradition. B. Highly spoken of.
C. Changeable over time. D. Popular among people.
8.What does the author think of tipping
A. It is totally unreasonable.
B. It must follow a fixed standard.
C. It can improve the quality of service.
D. It should only target waiters and waitresses.
9.Which practice is acceptable according to the text
A. Skipping tipping in the USA.
B. Twirling noodles around the fork in Africa.
C. Pointing with the index finger in Indonesia.
D. Making sounds while eating noodles in Japan.
10.Where is this text probably taken from
A. A research paper. B. A travel brochure.

As early as middle school I knew that I wanted to be a writer when I grew up. Instead, I became a teacher, and seven years into my teaching career at a small school in West Seattle, I finally decided to give up my writing dream.
It didn’t mean I stopped writing altogether, but it meant giving up on my first novel. Then one spring, four years later, my seventh graders and I had the chance to meet bestselling author Jamie Ford. After hearing his advice about writing prize-winning stories, I revisited my old dream.
I created a novel-writing project the following September when my seventh-grade students became my eighth-graders. Each week, during language arts class, my students spent an hour writing stories. During that hour, I told them that I, their teacher, would be doing the same homework. They were excited to have me working alongside them. Little did they know that I usually spent that hour writing emails to parents, planning the next day’s lessons, and grading papers.
During a story-writing period, a student called Kellen came up to me with a question about his book and caught me doing teacher work. He called me out. “Hey! You’re not writing!” he said, both excited and disappointed he’d caught the teacher off task.
I admitted (承认) it and got back to my novel. All was well until he caught me a second time during a different story writing period. Again, I had no excuse. I went back to work, and this time I wrote wholeheartedly, truly working on my novel.

2.答案:up
故填up。
Once the car is attached to the rail。
4.答案:about
故填about。
5.答案:being admitted

根据第二段最后一句“While some criticize this practice for being unreasonable, there's no doubt that tipping culture in the US encourages waiters and waitresses to provide better service.(虽然有些人批评这种做法不合理,但毫无疑问,美国的小费文化激励服务员提供更好的服务。)”

解析:①根据后文的“When I saw the main building of Moscow State University, I was deeply shocked by its beautiful architecture with its 270-year-long history.(当我看到莫斯科国立大学的主楼时,我被它有着270年历史的美丽建筑深深震撼了)”可知,此处强调的是教学楼建筑物深深地震撼了作者,故前文应该与之呼应。E选项“And the buildings surrounding me looked so different from the ones in China.(我周围的建筑看起来和中国的很不一样)”中的the buildings与下文呼应。故选E。
②根据后文的“The snow and ice won’t melt until April of the following year.(冰雪要到第二年四月才会融化)”可知,前文应该强调的是莫斯科的下雪季。F选项“Staring from early November each year, the snow season in Moscow is very long.(从每年11月初开始,莫斯科的雪季很长)”引起下文,解释了莫斯科雪季的时间。故选F。
③根据后文“In Russia, everyone intentionally stands on the right side when taking the escalator, which takes time to get used to.(在俄罗斯,乘坐自动扶梯时,每个人都故意站在右侧,这需要时间来适应)”可知,此处强调的是中俄文化上的差异需要作者花费时间来适应。C选项“The cultural differences were also hard to deal with at first.(一开始,文化差异也很难处理)”,引起下文,强调了文化差异给作者带来了影响。故选C。
④根据后文的“Tickets for concerts and cultural events here are relatively cheap, making it easy to enrich my life on weekends.(这里的音乐会和文化活动的门票相对便宜,很容易在周末丰富我的生活)”可知,前文应该强调作者去参观景点,由此与此处的音乐会和文化活动的门票相承接。D选项“I can visit many of the attractions that I used to see in my textbooks.( 我可以参观许多我过去在课本上看到的景点)”中景点与下文景点的门票相对应,符合语境。故选D。
⑤根据前文“Just as the old saying in Chinese goes, “it is better to travel ten thousand miles than to read ten thousand books.”(正如中国有句古话所说:“读万卷书不如行万里路。”)”可知,此处强调的是多出去看世界的好处和意义,因此A选项“Take a look at the outside world while you are young!(趁着年轻,多看看外面的世界!)” 故选A。

Specialists (专家) say that it is not easy to get used to life in a new culture. “Culture shock” occurs when they are talking about the feelings that people have in a new environment. The specialists say that there are three stages of culture shock. In the first stage, the newcomers like their new environment. Then, when the fresh experience dies, they begin to hate the city, the country, the people, and everything else. In the last stage, the newcomers begin to get used to their surroundings and, as a result, enjoy their life more.
There are some evident factors in culture shock. The weather may be unpleasant. The customs may be diverse. The public service systems — the telephones, the post office, or the transportation — may be difficult to work out. The simplest things seem to be the biggest problems. The language may be difficult.
Who feels culture shock Everyone does in this or that way. But culture shock surprises most people. Very often the people having the worst culture shock are those who never had any difficulties in their own country. Coming to a new country, these people find they do not have the same positions as they had back home. They find themselves without any identity. They have to build a new self-image.
Culture shock gives rise to a feeling of helplessness. This feeling may be homesickness. When homesick, people feel like staying inside all the time. They want to protect themselves from the strange environment, and create an escape inside their room for a sense of security (安全). This escape does solve the problem of culture shock for a short time, but it does nothing to make the person familiar with the culture. Getting to know the new environment and gaining experience are the long-term solutions to the problem of culture shock.
7.What could happen when people move to a new country
A. They may get used to their new surroundings with difficulty.
B. They may have well prepared for the new surroundings.
C. They may get used to the culture of the country quickly.
D. They may never be familiar with the culture of the country.

A. The language. B. The weather conditions and customs.
C. The public service systems. D. The homesickness.
9.According to the passage, who have the worst culture shock
A. People who are not successful at home.
B. People who are very successful at home.
C. People who earn much money abroad.
D. People who are famous abroad.
10.According to the writer, what is the best way to overcome culture shock
A. To protect ourselves from the unfamiliar environment.
B. To develop a strange sense of self-protection.
C. To get familiar with the new culture.
D. To return to our own country.

Sadie looked out of the window and sighed as she thought about another long, boring day of summer. She wondered what all of her friends from school were doing on their summer vacations. It had to be a lot better than looking out of a window. Sadie thought about the fun she had last summer when she and her best friend Allison went to the beach. But they wouldn’t be going to the beach together this summer because Allison had moved to a different city.
Suddenly, Sadie had an idea. She could call her friend Wendy, who always had funny ideas. Sadie raced to the living room, picked up the phone, and called Wendy. She sighed more deeply as the phone rang and rang. Then Sadie seated herself on the sofa, picked up the television remote, and put it down again. Then she went to her room and found the list of phone numbers of her good friends from school. In the living room, she called almost each of them, but no one was at home.
After hanging up the phone, Sadie wandered into the kitchen and sat down at the table, watching her mom do the cleaning. “Mom, I don’t have anyone to hang out with because my friends from school aren’t home and Allison moved away,” said Sadie. “Honey, there are many things you can do by yourself, like playing your guitar or having a walk in the garden.” said Mom.
“I don’t want to do those things by myself.” “Sometimes, it is nice to do things by yourself,” said Mom. “I like seeing my friends, but I also like doing things alone like taking a walk by myself or finding a quiet place to read. Why not have a try ”

此处为状语从句的省略,when引导省略了it is的状语从句,it指代Film, compare与it之间为被动关系,故填compared。
